Laird to the Tigers? What could we get?
Definitely seems like a pretty good fit. At first glance i figured there would be very little of value that we could recieve from the tigers, but BBTiA put up a good article outlining possibilities that we could get for Laird...
Guillermo Moscoso sounds pretty intriguing, although he's old for a prospect, he definitely sounds like a guy with a pretty good arm. I wouldnt mind recieving some guys who could be productive in our bullpen who could also be starters if need be. What does the community think?

I'm all for getting relievers for Laird
I think expectations that Laird would return any sort of high-level starter candidate are overblown. The Rangers are stacked with mid-level starting pitching prospects – it never hurts to get more, but I wouldn’t say that its a need.
On the other hand, guys who are relief prospects can often be had for a guy like Laird, and I’d say that is just as much a need for a team that recently protected Willie Eyre on their roster.

yea
exactly what im thinking, if we can get a couple of arms that can project as late inning relievers with pretty good stuff, id be happy. I dont really think we need another soft tossing lefty or middling RH SP prospect, id rather get a guy who borders on a power arm out of the pen or something along those lines

I think an alternative to targeting relievers
might be to target some prospects (not only pitchers) from the lower levels of their farm system and take the slot machine approach and bet on projections.

I'm all for that
I don’t care what we trade Laird for if they’re at all prospect-y. The idea that “we must receive pitching” is ludicrous to me

the thing is
the tigers don’t have a great LA presence (at least not like the Rangers, Red Sox, Braves, etc) so they don’t have much to choose from in that regard, either.

if we want to trade for relievers
then i hope we are discussing Laird with the Yankees as well. As far as the Tiger arms go, Moscoso is intriguing but he should be the second piece in such a deal, and unfortunately, they don’t have an obvious first piece, unless they want to talk about Crosby.

like the one you said in Crosby, and there are pitchers like Perry and Satterwhite.
Hmm, the more i read about Crosby, the more intrigued i am.

cannot be dealt for a while because they were ’08 draft picks. otherwise, I am sure they would be primary targets.

Depends when they signed
If they signed quick then they could around Feb 1 but if they signed late it would have to wait until mid March

PTBNL must be named within six months of the deal being completed
And players cannot be traded within the first year after they have been drafted. Ergo, they’re not really available.

Not in arbitration
He can’t insist on a no trade clause in arbitration and I doubt he would get one in any negotiation on a one year deal

it kinda sounds like
his best option would be to come back to texas in arb. I guess he could try to get a longer deal, but i dont think he’ll get more money. MIght as well come back to a place he’s comfortable, prove himself healthy and no fluke, and go out and earn himself more money. I wonder if he’s willing to take that risk and go for more money by playing on another one year deal.

if a player agrees to arbitration, he can’t be traded without his permission before June 16th.

Ok
I believe you, but can you tell me where you found that? I thought that the wording was that a free agent that signs a Major League contract can’t be traded until June 15. Someone that agrees to a club’s offer of arbitration this week isn’t a free agent when they eventually sign their contract.

Sheehan
A player offered arbitration has until just December 7 to accept or decline, allowing a team to go to the winter meetings without uncertainty. Moreover, the player can be traded at midseason (beginning June 16), and sooner should you get his permission.

Seriously
The key thing about Laird going to the Tigers would be Laird going to the Tigers. What we get in return doesn’t really matter to me that much – I think we’re more likely to gain more value from the money we save, the extra leverage in trading a young catcher we’ll have, and the playing time complications his absence will solve than the actual return player(s).

Well, this only applies if we deal with the Tigers
Nothing they have excites me at all (well, maybe Chris Lambert, but I doubt they’d give him up for Laird). Point is, don’t expect much if we deal with them.

well, I think you underestimate his value,
maybe I overestimate it. Who knows?
But answer me this – how does trading Laird increase the Rangers leverage in a potential future deal for one of the younger catchers?

Well, they can't go into ST with four catchers IMO
I don’t see how that would be possible, and I think other teams have to know that as well. And when they’re at the negotiating table, I think it can, in certain situations be a significant disadvantage when your opponent knows you need to move one of your catchers. I could see getting rid of Laird having a significant impact on negoatiations with Boston, for instance, because then we can simply tell Theo to eff off if we don’t get what we want instead of being faced with having to find another trade partner on the catching market.

While I don't think carrying four
catchers on the 40man roster through the offseason is ideal, it’s not a “can’t”. The Rangers have the chips, they can wait until another team offers up the value they think Laird is worth.
Also, it may not be a bad thing to have a catching surplus going into ST. What if the Yankees find out the Posada is just not going to be able to throw effectively? What if a catcher gets injured in ST? My point being that if the offers for Laird are low now, you can likely still get that offer in March while at the same time holding out to see if any other teams’ situations change inbetween.
