Laird to be moved soon?
T.R. Sullivan says that the Rangers may be close to making a move with Gerald Laird...
The Cincinnati Reds and the Detroit Tigers appear to have shown the most interest in Rangers catcher Gerald Laird, according to Major League sources.
General manager Jon Daniels said Thursday he is having conversations with a number of clubs about the Rangers' catching depth. He declined to discuss specifics, but it appears the Rangers are moving closer to getting something done and it likely involves Laird.
Sullivan invokes the name Zach Miner in connection with the Tigers' interest. Bleah.
Homer Bailey is, as always, mentioned as well, although you keep hearing that the Rangers aren't all that wild about Bailey, and I still find it difficult to believe that the Reds would deal Bailey for Laird.

Eh, maybe just TR's interpretation:
Daniels said the Rangers are likely to move a catcher sometime this winter. He added it’s most likely to be just one catcher. Whether the return on that catcher might be major league ready or not, well, there was no real comment on that. He did say he thought there was a reasonable chance the catcher could be moved before Christmas.

When I read
“it’s most likely to be just one catcher [traded]”, what I hear is: “once Laird is traded, we gain a subtle advantage in negotiating trades for my other 3”.

I gotta admit, spring training bores me
The innings/ABs are largely meaningless. The results certainmly mean less than the previous year’s innings/ABs. With split squads and working on pitches and unknown competition the results mean even less.
The games don’t count, at all. Shoot with a 162 games, it feels like half the real games hardly count.
Spring training is only exciting to me because real baseball is that much closer to happening.
I enjoy the hot stove season more than spring training, especially early spring training. I will admit that December is a frightfully dead month for the hot stove though.

Laird
I’ve kind of had the feeling that Laird would be the only catcher that is moved (and probably not for a signifigant haul)
Then if nobody caves on our Salty demands, I think we go into the season with Teagarden and Salty splitting catcher 60/40 and Salty also seeing some time at DH. MaxRam will start in AAA.
Some will probably disagree with this, but I think this is what plays out.

Personally,
I am fine with that. You don’t just trade Salty because you like Teagarden, vice versa. Get what you can for Laird and roll with the two catchers, and have Max in AAA. All three are young, let them develop. Then you can trade if someone either gets desperate (injury) or wants a catcher for their future.

Laird won't sit...
…he wants to be “the guy” behind the plate. He doesn’t want to share the duties.
Trouble is, he’s proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that, if he isn’t splitting time with another catcher, his offense goes away. Not just suffers – it goes away. And, he’s never been known as a first-rate game caller.
Trouble is, Taylor Teagarden has 10x the power offensively and seems better suited to MLB with a bat in his hand. And, he IS known as a first-rate game caller, top-notch gunner and a wizard around the dish with his glove. He’s ready now and we need to put him in the lineup… now.
Trouble is, Jarrod Saltalamacchia also has 10x the power offensively and bats from either side of the plate. He also has some glove issues behind the plate similar to Gerald’s and hasn’t yet discovered the art of calling a game (also similar to Gerald). But, he’s younger, as said bats from both sides of the plate and can also play some 1B. He makes an excellent complement to TT.
Trouble is, Max Ramirez has 15x the power offensively and is renowned for his offense. He is fearless (if still raw) behind the plate and fans love him. He’s still learning how to manage a game but appears flexible and can move behind the plate. Throwing out runners may be a challenge for him, but Micky Piazzer couldn’t throw out water in a bucket. He still had a pretty good major league career and will have considerations when the HoF balloting comes around when he’s eligible.
So, dump Gerald – keeping him would only cause trouble – get SOMEthing (Bailey would be a great experiment to undertake for many reasons already posted here) for him and move on. TT becomes the regular catcher, Salty backs him up (say 20% of the games) and plays some 1B and DHs. He’s still young so his potential is still way up there.

I like Daryl Thompson
as well…
aryl Thompson (AAA, Louisville Bats: Cincinnati Reds Organization): Thompson has been cruising up top prospect lists this year, and he should. This 6’, 180 lb. right hander has been stellar on the mound this year. To start the year, this 22 year old was playing for the Chattanooga Lookouts of the Southern League. He was nothing short of spectacular. Getting overshadowed somewhat by other prospects in the organization, a la Edinson Volquez, Johnny Cueto, and Homer Bailey, Thompson has put forth an excellent 2008 campaign. In 61 innings in Chattanooga, he posted a 1.76 ERA, K’d 56 batters and had a .208 BAA. His performance earned him a promotion to Louisville, where he has been excellent as well. With the exception of one rough start, Thompson has gone 22.2 innings, only allowing 2 Earned runs (0.81 ERA), and striking out 16 in those starts. Combined this year, he’s 6-2 with a 2.22 ERA, striking out 78 in 89 innings. With the way Cincy has been playing, this righty may be getting the call up sooner rather than later.
http://firstinning.com/players/Daryl-Thompson-a/
Fantasy leaguers just want to know whether Thompson will succeed in the Majors. Baseball Prospectus’ Kevin Goldstein gives a strong scouting report:
His low-90s heater can touch 95 and features a bit of cutting action, while his changeup is plus and his curveball solid.
On the other hand, McCoy talked to an NL scout who said, “That kid is not ready for the majors, not even close.” And Baseball America didn’t regard Thompson highly enough to include him among the Reds’ top 30 prospects. They seem warmer on him now, calling his fastball “explosive” in May.
http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/prospects/prospect-q-and-a/2008/266085.html
12. Daryl Thompson – RHSP – 22 years old
Thompson really burst back onto the scene this year as he regained his pre-arm injury velocity and then a little bit more. He was back to working in the low 90’s but capable of reaching back for a little more while mixing in his curve, change and slider at times. He posted an ERA of 2.19 between AA and AAA before getting a cup of coffee in the majors before having a slight injury. He should be in the running for the #5 spot in Cincinnati next year, although I think he would make a fantastic set up man out of the bullpen.
….. I can find a few more, but you get my point….

I just don’t understand this idea that we NEED to trade Gerald Laird. He’s the most experienced catcher we have right now. Can’t we just hold on to him for another year? Trade Salty or Max. Keep Laird and TT… we’re going to really fuck this up and be screwed if we get rid of Laird.

But I’m kind of infamous for being the biggest Salty homer on the boards here, and I do have similar doubts about Teagarden. Let’s just say that a Salty/Tea platoon is far preferrable to many of the alternatives – such as a Laird/young player platoon, or selling Salty short of his value.

right, but in the meanwhile...
trade Laird now, try to get Bailey…
Max at AAA to refine catching, play Salty 60% and TT 40% to build up Salty’s value, then trade him to Boston, NYY or another catcher-deprived team with lots of money and good prospects for a young dominant pitcher in return. That is, if Salty cooperates.
Then you can call Max up. Because for now, if you have Max in the majors, Salty has no place to DH or play much 1B, and doesn’t need to play 1B anyways, and his chance to shine is lost.

I must say, he’s playing very well. There were a few instances when he went to the basket and looked very nash-esque with those high arching layups. He’s extremely quick and attacks the basket, which is a plus…
Defensively? Well, he tries.
Mavs are playing well. They are 8-1 in their last 9 and really, should be 9-0, they just had a horrible stretch in that Laker game. They have a chance of sweeping this homestand.
And, not sure if people realize the type of impact Kidd is having, but, pretty good numbers so far this year:
45% from the field, 42% from 3’s, and averaging nearly 10 PTS, 9 AST, 7 RB, 2.5 steals per game. Although, he’s not doing too well from the free throw line right now.

I was having a "Jason Kidd vs. Devin Harris" argument
with a friend of mine today and posted those exact stats. In all players in basketball, the one player that comes close to matching Kidd’s production is LeBron James (Chris Paul on many levels is close as well). Obviously, James scores a ton more than Kidd at 27 ppg, but he does it shooting 20 shots per game…Kidd shoots 8 per game. They rebound the same, Kidd assists much better, steals better, LeBron blocks a little more shots and has a better FG% at .491, but Kidd is shooting VERY well at .441, and LeBron’s 3 pt % is a horrid .271% with 4 attempts per game, where Kidd is hitting a VERY good .413%.

when he was in college
he was my favourite basketball player, period, Northeastern, led the country in assists. Loved the little guy. I really love that he’s having this kind of success, he’s gotta be my favorite player again

I'm a Barea hater
I do still think he sucks as an overall player, but he has played well offensively for them here. I wish that someone like Green were accomplishing what Barea is, but it’s a credit to the little guy.

I don't think barea's streak is sustainable
but still, it is nice while it is lasting. I also don’t think it’s necessary for mavs success. They don’t need to rely on him or anything

if you think
we’re worse than Altanta, you’re fooling yourself. and Utah hasn’t proven that they can beat us on a consistent basis. i’d like to see a rematch with Cleveland at this point in our team’s evolution, but with Josh and Antoine back healthy…and I bet if we played New Orleans in a 7 game series right now, we’d take the series.
how can we have arrows down with our last 9 games’ success???

We play Atlanta tomorrow
I’ll be at the game. I’m expecting them to beat us.. Antoine Wright doesn’t make a difference in a win or loss.. but i’m looking at the big picture, not a hot streak or cold streak in the first 20 games of the season.

me too.
which is why I think at the end of the day, we’re going to have a very good starting 5 of Kidd, Wright/Green, Howard, Dirk, Damp with a strong rotation coming off the bench in Barrea, Terry, Wright/Green, Bass, Diop all on the same page with each other.
Wright may not make the difference in a win or loss, but with Howard out and Green either hurting or not playing for some other reason, and Shawne Williams trying to learn the offense and get his shooting up to par, Antoine Wright is extremely important. Once Howard comes back, maybe not that important. we’ll see if he can maintain consistency and grab that starting spot.

I don’t get the stance some take that Laird is some centerpiece…he’s a good guy to have on your team, but if I’m not mistaken, he’s shined in p/t duty…..yeah he had a few moments last year but he’s never rose to the top when given the reigns….maybe I’m wrong.

You are actually
right on. Plus he seemed to complain when he split time as well. If the Reds offer Bailey for Laird (highly unlikely) then I think that is a slam dunk.
by Michael Cave on Dec 4, 2008 10:45 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Not a slum dunk necessarily...
The fact that they would consider that makes me think he’s got some serious problems. Granted Volquez got traded for having his share of problems with us but the exchange was an all-star in Hamilton not an average/above-average catcher.
Just because Laird might not be our future doesn’t mean that getting anyone with talent is a slam dunk. We’ve got to consider the best value all around. I rather have a useful bullpen piece then someone they consider to be a headcase with little chance of long term recovery.
by slimshadty12 on Dec 5, 2008 2:02 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Im not sold bailey will even be juan/jose dominguez major league quality.
he may just “get it” all of a sudden after a trade, and cinci is terrible at developing pitching so im not totally sold on it all being on Homer when it comes to all the “coach-ability” issues, but if what ive heard is accurate, id rather go with a a package deal of 2 or 3 17-19 year old mid A prospects than a deal for Homer. I wanted us to draft Homer badly when he went through the draft but after all the years he has made me seriously question that.
but im on the fence about whether to blame Cinci or Bailey. id take the risk, but i want all of you to understand that it is a bigger risk than i think most realize here.

Nice
The Tigers reportedly have strong interest, but with competition building for Laird, they could face a challenge trying to put together a package of young pitching for him.

by RangerMad on Dec 4, 2008 10:32 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
of course they want Laird
With a strong arm and a track record of solid defensive play, Laird fits the profile of what the Tigers could use behind the plate. He threw out 21 out of 74 would-be basestealers while recording a .986 fielding percentage and allowing six passed balls. He batted .276 over 344 at-bats this past season, with 24 doubles, six home runs and 41 RBIs, including a .299 batting average away from the hot, humid weather in Texas.
What makes me mad is that it appreantly all boils down to $3 million? And Nolan Ryan is going to let JD get rid of our only experinced catcher because of this. Well, I would think Nolan Ryan would at least have some better judgement on this being a pitcher and knowing that getting rid of your only proven and expercinced catcher is a bad idea. I’m getting to the point where I’m about sick of the way this team decides how it spends it’s money. I’ve forked out a lot of money over the years as a full season ticket holder. I’m going to start thinking twice about how how spend my money on the Texas Rangers.

And 3 million bucks is too much for a back-up. The end.
by hiafex on Dec 4, 2008 11:19 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Or...
it boils down to the fact that he is the worst of the 4 catchers we have when you take all aspects of their game into consideration.

by slc ranger on Dec 4, 2008 11:21 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
It doesn't boil down to $3 million.
It boils down to this being a buyer’s market for catchers and thus a bad time to trade guys like Salty, Max and Teagarden. Laird’s value is not going to fluctuate as much since his ceiling is lower and his cost is higher than the younger guys. It makes sense for the team to accept a halfway decent value for Laird, and get the other guys more playing time so they can figure out which one they want to keep and let the market sort itself out a bit before trading the other one(s).
This actually makes a lot of sense in the big picture. The team isn’t going to win in 2009 anyway, why in the hell keep the “veteran” when there’s little chance he’ll outproduce the younger players by a margin that matters anyway?

Not exactly a fireballer anymore. His fastball lost 2 MPH in average velocity from 2007 to 2008.
I could see him being a good fit here if we traded Millwood or/and Padz (and didn’t make that trade for a MLB-ready young SP) but the way things stand right now I don’t see that we need a 44 y/o taking a rotation spot away from a young guy.

Even more indication
that they think that they can win the West this year. I will root for whatever burns long term assets at the expense of this attempted run (though the Holliday deal might be the only way they’re even going to approach that).

Bailey and Laird
I know it seems bizarre from where we stand, but i have a feeling Bailey has been on the table for Laird for a while now, and the Rangers simply aren’t interested. That said, I would much rather deal with the Reds than the Tigers. The Reds have an intriguing 3B named Juan Francisco who has a power bat and strong defensive skills, although he does not walk. Another profile here. I would take him as the primary piece and be happy with another live arm as well. He an Roenicke would be a solid package, I think.
by clark on Dec 5, 2008 7:56 AM CST reply actions 0 recs
that'd be foolish on our part BIG TIME
if we balked at Bailey…but if Francisco is that good, I’d be fine getting him in return with a pitcher for Laird

Why do you want a 3B prospect
We have our long term answer at 3B already. Hes playing SS right now. Francisco will be in AA this next year which means when MY moves over to 3B he will most likely be in AAA. What are you going to do keep him there for 4 years until MY can’t play there anymore?

That's interesting.
On one hand, Cordero is signed for a few more years so the closer position is locked up, plus CIN could replace Burton as a setup guy next year with rookie Josh Roenicke who looks like a stud.
On the other hand, CIN won’t have that much depth in terms of RH’ers next year with FA Weathers saying he doesn’t want to pitch next year for the Reds and Mike Lincoln a FA too. That leaves them with exclusively young RH’ers out of the pen like Masset, Ramon Ramirez, Roenicke, Majewski, etc.
I kinda think CIN would want to keep Burton around because even with him the group of RH’ers they’d have going into the season would be pretty inexperienced. They therefore might consider depth being really be important.
Maybe we should shoot lower than Burton and try and get Masset back. He had a nice stint in CIN last year.
