Rangers Interested in Big Unit?

Over at MLBTR, an article by Jack Magurder of the East Valley Sun, says in addition to the Giants and Dodgers, "Milwaukee, Oakland, Texas and the Chicago Cubs also have expressed varying degrees of interest (in Randy Johnson), sources said."

He made 30 starts last season with a 3.91 ERA and had 173 strikeouts.  The article also says he would be willing to take a one year deal.  Given the Rangers financial problems I would be surprised if they pursue him given he would probably want 5 figures for that one year.  I also can't imagine him choosing Texas over any of the other teams mentioned.  But, you never know.  Thoughts?

If

all he wants is five figures, I’ll cover it.

LOL.

Seriously, that makes him a horrible person?

I guess the bar for horribleness is set pretty low these days.

I blame Clint Eastwood.

i don't get this quote from the article

“Don’t get in my face, and don’t talk back to me, all right,” Randy Johnson said as he lived up to his Surname while introducing himself to the New York media.

His surname? I thought his Surname just meant penis. What else does it mean?

I demand 5 figures

Your quote from the article is:
Giants and Dodgers, "Milwaukee, Oakland, Texas and the Chicago Cubs also have expressed varying degrees of interest

Yeah, zero is part of the variance for the Rangers.

I dont see the point of bringing him in

he just takes up a spot in the rotation that a young guy could have.

What's the point?

Wow. Well, he could pitch really well and be dealt to a contender for a nice return. He could hold up a rotation spot and allow them to deal Millwood or Padilla, but not “take up a spot” for the long term. He could awe and teach some of the younger guys just by being in the same dugout. Oh, yeah, and lest we forget, he could pitch well and help the team win and feel good about the present as well as the future, sell tickets and maybe even lead the team into contention.

Nah, nevermind, there’s just no reason to bring a good pitcher into town.

I could see them bringing him in

for him to reach his pitching milestone this season, and sell some tickets.

As far as him being a jerk, I have had first-hand contact with him and if there is one person I would classify as a jerk in MLB (that I have had personal contact with) it is Randy Johnson. I don’t like the dude, don’t want to see his arse in a Rangers’ uniform, and will never forget the exchange I had with him.

I couldn’t even believe he was the way he was, and back then, I was pulling for him, because of two things:

1) He looked like Big Bird and so I felt sorry for the dude.
2) He could throw hard, but he went and discussed pitching philosophy with Nolan, and it is obvious he listened to advice, because that is when he became a pitcher instead of a hard thrower.

However, screw the dude. And if you ever see this bozo pitching at The Ballpark and a ball comes from out of the stands toward the mound, you’ll know I am at the game. I am not an immature little prick, but I am a vengeful older s.o.b. that will keep a promise to a piece of crap like Randy Johnson.

That being said, he could help bridge the season for one year. As much as it would make me puke, I can’t say he couldn’t help the team be better in 2009. I can assassinate him after the season. (Just kidding on the assassination, in case he might have pissed off somebody else with less self-control than I have) ;-)

I miss 1989. I miss 1996. Please make me miss another season in 2008.

LOL!

OK, this is the quickest version I can tell….

A long time ago, I was into the sportscard/memorabilia thing. I wasn’t die hard/shady like some you may have met. I was a fan/collector and collected things of players I liked, but I usually had to pay to get an autograph, etc.

When Seattle was in town and playing the Rangers, there was a convention, and Randy Johnson was going to be there, so I paid for 2 autographs from him. My girlfriend was with me, and she always enjoyed going with me, but wanted her own collection, therefore, I had to buy 2 of everything…lol.

Anyway, we are in the long line for dickhead and I was watching where he would sign on the balls. You see, back then there were some players that refused to sign on the “sweet spot” of a baseball (Barry Bonds was known to refuse to do this), so I saw that he was doing that for the people ahead of me. I turned to my girlfriend and made the comment, “Cool, he is signing on the sweet spot.” That was all I said.

Editor’s note: Even if nobody would believe it, my ex was pretty friggin’ hot then.

So, I am first when we approach him, and hand him the baseball and said “Hi, Randy”. He asks me, “Where do you want it signed?” I said, “On the sweet spot, please.” He pauses, looks at me with a smirk, with pen and ball in hand, and begins to rotate the ball and signs it in the most hideous spot on the ball.

As he begins signing it, I said, “You’ve got to be kidding me.” He said, “I heard you say that you wanted the autograph on the sweet spot back there, and the only people who ask for that are trying to re-sell it later.” I said, “No, it looks better when sitting in the case. I can’t believe you just did that.”

He ignores me and looks at my girl and says, “Would you like me to put it on your sweet spot?” (Yes, in a smarmy way) She says, in all her class and charm, “Whatever dude. Not a chance!” and turns and hands the ticket to someone behind us. I said something to the effect of, “Your lucky they have these security guys here”. At this point, he begins staring at me and I wasn’t a small guy in my own right. Someone else behind the table, who heard all of this asked me to leave if they reimbursed me for the cost of the ticket and the ball.

Holding the ball, I said, “No. it’s cool. Screw this dude. I’ll keep it and one day he’ll see it again.” Looking at him, I said, “I wish you were pitching in this series, then you could get it back real quick.” He just laughed me off.

I don’t blame him for laughing me off, and I know this story doesn’t make me sound very mature or tough, but I promise you, if he would have stood up, it would have been on. The ball thing was just him being a jerk, but the comment to my girlfriend was pretty out of line.

Yes, I still have the ball. Yes, she would always ask me if I wanted to go to the game whenever the Mariners were in town…..for the next 6 years….even when he didn’t play for them anymore. And, most importantly, no, she is not still hot!

To quote a wise man: “I guess he didn’t know my status!”
