A-Rod Says He Will Play for Dominicans in 2009 WBC
Just one more reason to dislike this guy, he was born and raised in the U.S. so his parents were both from the DR, He is an American, so why the switch, he played on the U.S. team in the last WBC, is he American or Not? Does this gripe anyone else or am i making too much of it, go ahead talk amongst yourselves. rangers talk has little going on right now, so i figured all of us who hate the Yankees (and/or Arod) could have a little hot stove league talk about this.

Cases for the Dominican and Italy and Greece, the Netherlands etc. are still going to happen. In Alex’s case, I guess it’s alright. The whole thing is a showbiz arena.
Oh yeah … I suppose it’s OK IF he can make their team. Heh …….

It bugs me a little
Mostly because he played for the U.S. the last classic.
Confused much?

yeah
that’s the only thing that bugs me. There was a big deal made of it then and A-Rod decided on the US team. So why switch now?
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

this is fucking stupid
in international events why can you change teams except under extreme circumstances
this is far from that
i thought he was PROUD of his american background?
Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?
KG: Oh yeah.
Scout: Well, he spent a lot of it on milkshakes.

My ethnic heritage is German
but I am an American. Born here, raised here, never been a German citizen.
I would probably be listed as an American by the entire universe, but for baseball, I guess I could change it.
I don’t like it at all and if you are from another country, by all means, represent your country. If you are from China, you don’t need to be playing for the Nigerian team. Letting players play for other teams is kind of disingenuous.
So, do I have a problem with it? Just a little bit. Its not authentic.

Concur...
I love how some Rangers fans find any reason they can to hate A-Rod.
The contract he signed, the team didn’t win when he was here, now he’s a Yankee, he chokes in the playoffs. I heard he is the reason for the economic recession too.
It’s fucking ridiculous people. Both his parents are from the Dominican. He has duel citizenship. Stop bitching about A-Rod. He’s the best player in baseball and that is the real reason for so much of the hate towards him. It’s not like he’s out making an ass out of himself all the time like many other professional athletes.

You already have
U.S. and Texas. The Republic of Texas is a state by treaty, not by annexation. Sort of the equivalent of a domestic relationship but no marriage.

What
Treaty are you referring to? Texas was annexed by a joint resolution of Congress in 1845, which I know some argue as invalid . In fact, the whole controversy was that there wasn’t a treaty, since Texas was foreign territory.
by brettgardner on Dec 6, 2008 9:01 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Acceptance by Congress as a State
Including its’ constitution. Annexation was never approved:

Post-secession readmission (March, 1870) with terms of agreement:

Huh?
You just supported my point that Texas was annexed in 1845 without treaty.
Annexation was approved. I’m not sure what you’re talking about.

Sorry, I was making a dual/duel joke.
Apparently I’m the only who found the idea of having duel citizenship funny.

What Ed said...
is in part right. Texas did reserve the right to once again become independent of the United States. However, I believe that there was a time limit, or some other “thingie” that occurred, where that “right” is no longer valid.
I believe it occurred sometime within the last 20-25 years.
To answer and the above questions:
1) No, my parents were both born in the US, but not most of my relatives
2) I’ve never once bashed A-Rod on any site, and have stated several times that he had been the best player in baseball. I also said that about Bonds when he was in Pittsburgh. Those are the only things I have ever said about either of them, except that I didn’t want Texas to bring Bonds into the organization, when someone put forth that idea within the past couple seasons.
3} As I stated, if he had dual citizenship, or was actually born there, or lived most or even a significant part of his life there, I wouldn’t have a problem with it. It’s like Shawn Bradley playing for Germany in Olympic Basketball, because he did have dual citizenship, for some reason.
Wait. I just read that he has dual citizenship? When did he get it? Did they give it to him later? I guess I’m losing my mind and I apologize in advance if I am wrong about this dual citizenship for A-Rod. I wonder why I would believe otherwise.

That's true.
I might make sure to catch a Yu Darvish start this Spring.
That would probably be pretty cool.
But the tournament as a whole? Meh and a half.

I went to a couple of the games in 2006 when I still in lived in Phoenix
It was a great atmosphere — especially the game vs. Mexico (which the US lost). It seemed like what a World Cup soccer match would be like. I mean I didn’t really care about it all but it was a cool thing to go to.
I'm undefeated in fights. Have I been in any? No. Thats because people know my f'ing status. Don't mess with the elite. - Miles

it means alot
and is really really cool for all the other countries besides the US… THey really arent fed this kind of big time baseball with big time players like we are for 162 games a year. I definitely like it just b/c i love to see the countries were alot of these players come from, get to root for their players on thier team. Its fun to see that kind of passion in baseball.

Who cares?
He has dual citizenship, right?
He goes to the Dominican a lot, he’s parents are Dominican. He’s full blooded Dominican. He’s lived in the Dominican. He was born in the US. Let him choose. Who are we to say what team he should play for…

I don't think someone should be allowed to switch countries
That’s the rule for the Olympics. So for example, Chris Kaman can’t play for the American basketball team because he played with Germany.

Agreed
I don’t care who he plays for, but a player being able to switch WBC countries whenever they want makes it even more meaningless in my opinion.

Zola Budd
In the 80s, South Africa wasn’t allowed to participate in the Olympics, so she got British citizenship and then ran for Britain.
And then she collided with Mary Decker, knocking her out of the race, and got booed and finished last anyway.
