So.
There’s officially going to be a playoff game in Arizona.

As I was going to say before Z so rudely closed the thread
We had a guy down there. The returner just grabbed the ball on a bounce and our guy slipped, AGAIN. How exactly did the coaching screw us there or really anywhere in this game? Did you want our guy to grab the ball as soon as it hit the ground and potentially give up 20-30 yards of field position?
Some of you guys just like to bitch no matter what don’t you?
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.

If you're replying to me
I’m talking about the unit as a whole, including the punter, not specifically coaching or anything like that. You expect that a punt will gain you at least 30 yards, and you should be able to count on that. Whether it’s purely the punter or a mistake by a coverage player or players, you have to avoid that sort of play in a game like this.

I don't know who it was
But whoever was saying our coaching was terrible all day after that punt return

I'm perfectly calm.
Your point was irrelevant. If they don’t give up that easy TD, then Romo isn’t in a position to throw the winning TD for the other team. Pitt waltzed right down the field and scored with minimal effort on a drive where we absolutely had to have a stop. You can’t do that in the NFL and hope to win.
by Athos on Dec 7, 2008 6:45 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
your point is kind of dumb
so if the cowboys had let them score in the 3rd quarter but then held them in the 4th, that would been fine?

defense played well the whole game and they probably got hurt by two questionable ref calls.

They played great for 3+ quarters.
But then they mailed it in up by a touchdown on a hostile field when their own quarterback was sputtering. In a close game, you have to come up big and get a stop there. Overall, they played great and in a typical game where they hold the other team to one touchdown, they’ve done enough to win.
I’m not saying they sucked tonight. This loss is on Romo. But you’ve got to get a stop in that particular situation. Your alternative hypothetical is irrelevant when my criticism is fact specific to the exact situation they were in. You can’t play 3 quarters brilliantly and then relax in the 4th. It really is that simple.
by Athos on Dec 7, 2008 7:19 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
no, it's not
to rate the defense bad is incorrect.
yes, they should have gotten a stop on the last drive. but you can’t say that the last play is more indicative of how good they are then the first drive or the 10th drive.
it doesn’t make any sense to criticize them in that situation.
you are choosing to over look 3+ quarters AND two bad ref calls. and the 5 turnovers that had the defense playng a short field too many times.

Yeesh. It's like you're not reading what I wrote.
Defense played well enough to win overall. But for Romo’s absolute disaster of a game, they should have won. But as good as they played, they mailed it in on a crucial drive that let Pitt tie the game and cement momentum. That was a bad, bad series. As good as they played, you can’t excuse their performance in that specific situation.

you are implying that the colts teams he was losing on are as good as the recent cowboy teams – which is wrong.
the colts SUCKED his first few years.
they made the playoffs, and he looked horrible against the jets 2002.
2003 he went 2-1 in the playoffs.
they went 1-1 in 2004 playoffs (losing to new england for 2nd straight year).

A few things
First, I guess I need to repeat this: I think Romo is a very good qb.
Second, you really should google you some Danny White. I stand behind it as a very apt comparison.
Third, you giving him credit for “icing” the Wash game is ridiculous. He didn’t even throw the ball on that drive. And I don’t want to debate this again, b/c I’ve already read your stance, but not putting any blame on him for the Arizona game is something that baffles me as well. Agree to disagree there.
Fourth, we have 6-7 pro bowlers not including Romo on offense. He has more weapons than the terminator.
Fifth, sam stole my point about Mr. November, which I think has a good deal to do with that fat slob we have as a head coach, but still doesn’t reflect well on him.
And finally, I’ll repeat this again: I’m not contending that he won’t get it together eventually. Many have, and many haven’t.
This season is hard to judge with the injury (and injuries to others) and all, but he doesn’t look to have made any progress from last year’s meltdown. Do you feel he has matured as a QB; that the 08 Romo is better than the 07 version?
Nah, noob.

first- uh, i made no suggestion you said anything otherwise since that post. but thanks for the reminder. the only football point i directly disagreed with you on was the 4th quarter comebacks, which you didnt actually address in this post beyond one nitpick. also didnt reply to the one other thing ive said to you, whats wrong with defending a good player? You won’t find me saying hes the best QB in the nfl or something.
2nd – k….
3rd- Technically he did throw a pass, a dump off to barber for 26 yards, but ok, yes he wasnt a major factor in that one so strike that game if you wish.
But by the same token some of the games he lost wern’t his fault, and that that still leaves several 4th quarter comebacks and key drives. I still contend hes been just fine in most close & late 4th quarter situations.
4th- In a not so strange coincidence, so do most of the QBs considered good by the public.
5th – Dont you mean mr late august, september, october, and november?
What about romo makes you think december struggles thus far are who he is and not just how things have thus far played out. Does it really seem like he cracks under pressure to you? Ive already said he hasnt been great in the playoffs so far, but with a fairly small sample size Im not contributing that to some problem in his game.
On the flipside, if he does go on a great run here and carry the cowboys deep into the playoffs, I wont be saying he made a huge step forward in his game. Im obviously not a believer in any of these qbs being “mr december”. Not every good qb can win every year. If brady comes back next year and loses in the first round of the playoffs for a couple years in a row im not going to then decide he has lost his playoff ability.
6th – K..
SUMMARY: The bottom line here is that you read everything into his late season struggles thus far, and I dont care all that much.
Now, back to the only thing I ever actually asked you: Whats wrong with me defending romo. You took issue with me, not the other way around so why are you posting so defensively.
the preceding post was a great success.

I have no problem with defending a good player
I said you made excuses for him, like when you said it was ALL the OL’s fault in the AZ game. But you haven’t really done that for this game, so maybe I was generalizing too much.
One of the problems with these boards is how hard it is to assess someone’s tone. If I came across as defensive, it was unintentional. I meant no rancor.
Romo has a QB rating 30 points lower than his average in Dec./Jan, and 50 points lower than November. I think he’s played enough games, with enough talent around him, to believe that’s a problem.
Don’t you?
Nah, noob.

first game all year romo deserves the criticism
though I still want to know what was up with he and witten constantly screwing up.
its not that surprising to lose to pitt, but they way in happened in the 4th was obviously… horrible.
well, at least atlanta losing keeps the playoffs alive, but its going to take some great performances.
the preceding post was a great success.
by DSheppard on Dec 7, 2008 6:37 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
it looked like the last two throws were on witten
which is just odd to say the least. what was he doing?

yeah
this loss hurts don’t get me wrong, but it’s not as bad as atlanta’s loss was today.
Gotta go 3-1 now though right?

I would think so…

Bah I meant 2-1 earlier and 10-6
Giants, Baltimore, and @ Philly are the last 3.
It’s gonna be close.
But the NFC south teams still have to play each other and things like that.

tuff loss...
17-0 in the fourth plus is tough…
i definitely think this is a game where tony romo’s play exasterbated what could have been a cowboys win…. the defense was phenominal. it can’t be stated enough how well the defense played. yet, as always. the play of the QB dictates the game and, even as a homer, romo played terrible and should shoulder the lions share of the critisizm…
romo will always cost his team 2-3 wins a season, and always be credited with 2-3 wins... no matter the season... this was one of those loses..."Anyone that isn't pro-choice never met you" ~Brian Thomas on Seth...
by ivysafety39 on Dec 7, 2008 6:57 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
you know
romo did have a bad game but i don’t think enough epople are putting the blame on witten for the last INT. the ball sailed a bit but he missed his route. not sure what would have happened if he had ran the right route

Romo's game wasn't "bad" ...
it was horrible. He was off significantly all game long. Either he was horrible, or his receivers had the worst game in the history of the sport in being out of position. I think common sense dictates it’s the former.
by Athos on Dec 7, 2008 7:22 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
what the hell?
no it doesn’t. witten took the blame straight out for the last INT and TO stopped running on the 1st INT. the fade route was on romo and the fumble was really close. he was airmailing throws all game but it’s not like every single thing was his fault
also, i’m not going to debate the difference between bad and horrible.

Autobids
I know it’s all about the money/drawing power, but god, do I hate it. Big East/ACC were not strong conferences this year.
Even the SEC, outside of Florida/Bama wasn’t really impressive. Georgia was clearly not a big time team this year. Tennessee/Vanderbilt/LSU/Auburn? YAWN.

Texas lost to Texas Tech on the road.

Earlier
while talking about Utah/Bama. Saying that a MWC team can never go to a national title game.
This Utah team? No, I agree they aren’t that good. But he dismisses the conference as a whole, even though they’ve had a great season. Hence my idiot remarks.

I know it's hypothetical:
but hypothetically, if TCU beat OU and Utah, you wouldn’t put them at least in consideration? Their schedule was respectable this year, and almost all the games they played, they won convincingly. I’m not saying this as a TCU fan either.
I didn’t expect Michigan to be this awful, so preseason, it looked like a stronger schedule for Utah too. They did everything expected of them, and won a tough conference. I just took exception to him comparing the MWC to the MAC or WAC in terms of toughness.
