As I was going to say before Z so rudely closed the thread
We had a guy down there. The returner just grabbed the ball on a bounce and our guy slipped, AGAIN. How exactly did the coaching screw us there or really anywhere in this game? Did you want our guy to grab the ball as soon as it hit the ground and potentially give up 20-30 yards of field position?
Some of you guys just like to bitch no matter what don’t you?
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
If you're replying to me
I’m talking about the unit as a whole, including the punter, not specifically coaching or anything like that. You expect that a punt will gain you at least 30 yards, and you should be able to count on that. Whether it’s purely the punter or a mistake by a coverage player or players, you have to avoid that sort of play in a game like this.

I don't know who it was
But whoever was saying our coaching was terrible all day after that punt return

that would have been so good if that clanked off.
cowboys offense needs to do something here. at least drive down the field a bit before the punt

calm down
""If they'd have told me you can make the team but you've got to shine the shoes, I'd have been there shining shoes." -Bradley
I'm perfectly calm.
Your point was irrelevant. If they don’t give up that easy TD, then Romo isn’t in a position to throw the winning TD for the other team. Pitt waltzed right down the field and scored with minimal effort on a drive where we absolutely had to have a stop. You can’t do that in the NFL and hope to win.
your point is kind of dumb
so if the cowboys had let them score in the 3rd quarter but then held them in the 4th, that would been fine?
this is like people who argue that arod doing well in april doesn’t mean anything because he’s not there when it counts.
defense played well the whole game and they probably got hurt by two questionable ref calls.
""If they'd have told me you can make the team but you've got to shine the shoes, I'd have been there shining shoes." -Bradley
They played great for 3+ quarters.
But then they mailed it in up by a touchdown on a hostile field when their own quarterback was sputtering. In a close game, you have to come up big and get a stop there. Overall, they played great and in a typical game where they hold the other team to one touchdown, they’ve done enough to win.
I’m not saying they sucked tonight. This loss is on Romo. But you’ve got to get a stop in that particular situation. Your alternative hypothetical is irrelevant when my criticism is fact specific to the exact situation they were in. You can’t play 3 quarters brilliantly and then relax in the 4th. It really is that simple.
no, it's not
to rate the defense bad is incorrect.
yes, they should have gotten a stop on the last drive. but you can’t say that the last play is more indicative of how good they are then the first drive or the 10th drive.
it doesn’t make any sense to criticize them in that situation.
you are choosing to over look 3+ quarters AND two bad ref calls. and the 5 turnovers that had the defense playng a short field too many times.
""If they'd have told me you can make the team but you've got to shine the shoes, I'd have been there shining shoes." -Bradley
Yeesh. It's like you're not reading what I wrote.
Defense played well enough to win overall. But for Romo’s absolute disaster of a game, they should have won. But as good as they played, they mailed it in on a crucial drive that let Pitt tie the game and cement momentum. That was a bad, bad series. As good as they played, you can’t excuse their performance in that specific situation.
"in a close game, they have to step up. that's how you win in the nfl"
that’s a silly thing to say. It’s like saying choice should have broken his run up the middle for a TD
""If they'd have told me you can make the team but you've got to shine the shoes, I'd have been there shining shoes." -Bradley
that's a strained analogy
whatever,. dont’ want to talk about it anymore
""If they'd have told me you can make the team but you've got to shine the shoes, I'd have been there shining shoes." -Bradley
I agree
With ab03 on this one. You can’t blame the defense for this at all. They did their job all day. The offense completely blew it.
It’s not realistic to think you can hold down a really good team on every possession.
They blew up in the 4th.
That was pretty obvious.
This wasn't Pittsburgh winning the game
this was the Cowboys playing and looking like shit. They are in serious danger of not making the playoffs.

"Sooner or later, prospects kill you, because you hang onto them." - Greggo, 11/22/2005
So it's the OC's fault that Romo ...
had zero focus? JG can just call the plays, it’s up to Romo to get the ball in the same zip code as the receiver.

"Sooner or later, prospects kill you, because you hang onto them." - Greggo, 11/22/2005

i’m saying JG should have ran and did call running plays but choice stopped running north/south.
kind of hurt. barber would have helped a lot in the 4th quarter
""If they'd have told me you can make the team but you've got to shine the shoes, I'd have been there shining shoes." -Bradley

Aside from further endangering their playoff chances
the worst thing about this game is that you’re probably going to have to win in this sort of weather in NY in the playoffs to go anywhere. And it was clearly a big factor in their play.
his 2 damn playoff games?
one of which he was GOOD in as a qb, and the other one where the o-line collapsed and he was under heavy pressure all day?

thats silly
hes not a one man team, and if you expect every good qb to completely dominate and carry every significant game.. its just not going to happen. There are hall of fame qbs who didnt win a big game for the first half of their careers.
Everyone said eli couldnt win a big game then a couple months later hes mr clutch cant lose.
Romo is a good qb, and over time its going to show.
And really, what are you suggesting here? You want to replace romo this offseason because youve determined he cant win in the playoffs? That would be so incredibly foolish.

He’s our best option at QB. I just wish he would show up in big games.
by lildrummerboy on Dec 7, 2008 7:59 PM CST up reply actions
Because hes a freakin good qb
Its the people who change their opinion on every play and lack any perspective at all that have the problem.
the preceding post was a great success.
Of course he is a good QB
He’s a very talented guy. I love many things about his game.
He’s also heavily prone to chokesmanship. Answer me this: if the team is down by 6 with 2 minutes to go, and we have the ball, do you like our chances even remotely?
I sure as hell don’t.
He tends to come up with what my stepfather calls a sizeable case of loser’s limp.
Hopefully, that’ll change.
Nah, noob.
So you think its a problem that I defend a good player?
And im pretty sure the cowboys have had their share of 4th quarter comebacks under romo.
Hell, his infamous bobbled snap was at the tail end of a drive to go ahead late in the 4th in a playoff game.
the preceding post was a great success.
games decided late in the 4th quarter in the last 2 seasons
giants: TD with 3:00 left to ice game
buffalo: Td with 20 seconds left to get close, field goal drive to win
detroit: TD with 18 seconds left to win
philly: lost
philly: TD with 4:35 to go ahead
washington: lost on a failed onside kick after romo threw a TD at 1:42 to get within 2.
arizona: TD and field goal drives with 2 minutes left to tie game, then broke finger in overtime before blocked punt to lose
washington: 5+ minute drive to ice game and run out the clock.
pittsburgh: lost game with interception and failed drive at end.
dear god, what a horrible track record.
the preceding post was a great success.
oh and another stat
4th quarter interceptions this season through weak 12: zero.
the preceding post was a great success.
you see, this post was in response to saying he doesnt want him late in games
not playoff games. which i previously addressed. romo doesnt have a good playoff record, but 2 games, in neither of which he was the real cause of the loss, is not enough to condemn him as someone who cant perform in the playoffs.
seriously, there are a LOT of qbs with superbowl rings who went more than 0-2 in the playoffs to start their careers.
the preceding post was a great success.
3-8 dec/jan
on playoff-caliber cowboys teams.
i think that sucks.
if it’s not his fault, then it’s a crappy coincidence.
i don’t think that anybody realistically thinks that he is not good. similarly, i am hopefully optimistic that nobody actually thinks he’s great.
he’s a starting qb in the nfl. of course he’s good. beyond that, we can only speculate about his potential b/c he hasn’t proved anything to me.
in related news – i’m not sure if you guys knew this, but we have roy freakin’ williams at receiver now, too. you wouldn’t know it from watching. when do we see this guy???

Peyton
took how long to win his first playoff game?
Came into the league in the ’98 season and won his first playoff game in the 2003 season.
Didn’t win a Super Bowl till the 2006 season.
Romo will be fine.
I'm undefeated in fights. Have I been in any? No. Thats because people know my f'ing status. Don't mess with the elite. - Miles
that's a fair comparison...
you are implying that the colts teams he was losing on are as good as the recent cowboy teams – which is wrong.
the colts SUCKED his first few years.
they made the playoffs, and he looked horrible against the jets 2002.
2003 he went 2-1 in the playoffs.
they went 1-1 in 2004 playoffs (losing to new england for 2nd straight year).
you may be the first to compare tony romo to peyton manning, but i think we see that romo is failing to follow in those footsteps.

No
I’m just saying great QB’s don’t always win right away.
I'm undefeated in fights. Have I been in any? No. Thats because people know my f'ing status. Don't mess with the elite. - Miles
what are you talking about
peyton had an amazing team his second year and third year (where he absolutely sucked)
""If they'd have told me you can make the team but you've got to shine the shoes, I'd have been there shining shoes." -Bradley
A few things
First, I guess I need to repeat this: I think Romo is a very good qb.
Second, you really should google you some Danny White. I stand behind it as a very apt comparison.
Third, you giving him credit for “icing” the Wash game is ridiculous. He didn’t even throw the ball on that drive. And I don’t want to debate this again, b/c I’ve already read your stance, but not putting any blame on him for the Arizona game is something that baffles me as well. Agree to disagree there.
Fourth, we have 6-7 pro bowlers not including Romo on offense. He has more weapons than the terminator.
Fifth, sam stole my point about Mr. November, which I think has a good deal to do with that fat slob we have as a head coach, but still doesn’t reflect well on him.
And finally, I’ll repeat this again: I’m not contending that he won’t get it together eventually. Many have, and many haven’t.
This season is hard to judge with the injury (and injuries to others) and all, but he doesn’t look to have made any progress from last year’s meltdown. Do you feel he has matured as a QB; that the 08 Romo is better than the 07 version?
Nah, noob.
x
first- uh, i made no suggestion you said anything otherwise since that post. but thanks for the reminder. the only football point i directly disagreed with you on was the 4th quarter comebacks, which you didnt actually address in this post beyond one nitpick. also didnt reply to the one other thing ive said to you, whats wrong with defending a good player? You won’t find me saying hes the best QB in the nfl or something.
2nd – k….
3rd- Technically he did throw a pass, a dump off to barber for 26 yards, but ok, yes he wasnt a major factor in that one so strike that game if you wish.
But by the same token some of the games he lost wern’t his fault, and that that still leaves several 4th quarter comebacks and key drives. I still contend hes been just fine in most close & late 4th quarter situations.
4th- In a not so strange coincidence, so do most of the QBs considered good by the public.
5th – Dont you mean mr late august, september, october, and november?
What about romo makes you think december struggles thus far are who he is and not just how things have thus far played out. Does it really seem like he cracks under pressure to you? Ive already said he hasnt been great in the playoffs so far, but with a fairly small sample size Im not contributing that to some problem in his game.
On the flipside, if he does go on a great run here and carry the cowboys deep into the playoffs, I wont be saying he made a huge step forward in his game. Im obviously not a believer in any of these qbs being “mr december”. Not every good qb can win every year. If brady comes back next year and loses in the first round of the playoffs for a couple years in a row im not going to then decide he has lost his playoff ability.
6th – K..
SUMMARY: The bottom line here is that you read everything into his late season struggles thus far, and I dont care all that much.
Now, back to the only thing I ever actually asked you: Whats wrong with me defending romo. You took issue with me, not the other way around so why are you posting so defensively.
the preceding post was a great success.
I have no problem with defending a good player
I said you made excuses for him, like when you said it was ALL the OL’s fault in the AZ game. But you haven’t really done that for this game, so maybe I was generalizing too much.
One of the problems with these boards is how hard it is to assess someone’s tone. If I came across as defensive, it was unintentional. I meant no rancor.
Romo has a QB rating 30 points lower than his average in Dec./Jan, and 50 points lower than November. I think he’s played enough games, with enough talent around him, to believe that’s a problem.
Don’t you?
Nah, noob.
I don't lack perspective....
I’m just worried he may be the another Danny White. Stats aren’t everything.

first game all year romo deserves the criticism
though I still want to know what was up with he and witten constantly screwing up.
its not that surprising to lose to pitt, but they way in happened in the 4th was obviously… horrible.
well, at least atlanta losing keeps the playoffs alive, but its going to take some great performances.
the preceding post was a great success.
it looked like the last two throws were on witten
which is just odd to say the least. what was he doing?

It’s gonna be close.
But the NFC south teams still have to play each other and things like that.

tuff loss...
17-0 in the fourth plus is tough…
i definitely think this is a game where tony romo’s play exasterbated what could have been a cowboys win…. the defense was phenominal. it can’t be stated enough how well the defense played. yet, as always. the play of the QB dictates the game and, even as a homer, romo played terrible and should shoulder the lions share of the critisizm…
romo will always cost his team 2-3 wins a season, and always be credited with 2-3 wins... no matter the season... this was one of those loses..."Anyone that isn't pro-choice never met you" ~Brian Thomas on Seth...
you know
romo did have a bad game but i don’t think enough epople are putting the blame on witten for the last INT. the ball sailed a bit but he missed his route. not sure what would have happened if he had ran the right route
""If they'd have told me you can make the team but you've got to shine the shoes, I'd have been there shining shoes." -Bradley
Romo's game wasn't "bad" ...
it was horrible. He was off significantly all game long. Either he was horrible, or his receivers had the worst game in the history of the sport in being out of position. I think common sense dictates it’s the former.
what the hell?
no it doesn’t. witten took the blame straight out for the last INT and TO stopped running on the 1st INT. the fade route was on romo and the fumble was really close. he was airmailing throws all game but it’s not like every single thing was his fault
also, i’m not going to debate the difference between bad and horrible.
""If they'd have told me you can make the team but you've got to shine the shoes, I'd have been there shining shoes." -Bradley
How about "shitty"?
That’s another accurate way to describe Romo’s play tonight.

I know it’s all about the money/drawing power, but god, do I hate it. Big East/ACC were not strong conferences this year.
Even the SEC, outside of Florida/Bama wasn’t really impressive. Georgia was clearly not a big time team this year. Tennessee/Vanderbilt/LSU/Auburn? YAWN.

Earlier
while talking about Utah/Bama. Saying that a MWC team can never go to a national title game.
This Utah team? No, I agree they aren’t that good. But he dismisses the conference as a whole, even though they’ve had a great season. Hence my idiot remarks.
"Relying on the government to protect your privacy is like asking a peeping tom to install your window blinds."
Well he's right
that in the current system a MWC pretty much can’t make the title game.
I'm undefeated in fights. Have I been in any? No. Thats because people know my f'ing status. Don't mess with the elite. - Miles
I know it's hypothetical:
but hypothetically, if TCU beat OU and Utah, you wouldn’t put them at least in consideration? Their schedule was respectable this year, and almost all the games they played, they won convincingly. I’m not saying this as a TCU fan either.
I didn’t expect Michigan to be this awful, so preseason, it looked like a stronger schedule for Utah too. They did everything expected of them, and won a tough conference. I just took exception to him comparing the MWC to the MAC or WAC in terms of toughness.
"Relying on the government to protect your privacy is like asking a peeping tom to install your window blinds."
Oh, I agree with you they would be
deserving….
It’s just that the system makes it damn near impossible.
I'm undefeated in fights. Have I been in any? No. Thats because people know my f'ing status. Don't mess with the elite. - Miles
Gotcha
Well Herbstreit’s attitude during the entire segment for Utah/Bama was talking about the inferiority of Utah’s conference, and to me signaled him taking away from Utah’s season, rather than questioning the the system itself.
"Relying on the government to protect your privacy is like asking a peeping tom to install your window blinds."
Probably so
I didn’t see it, so I’ll take your word for it.
I think it is funny that he would knock the quality of the MWC without saying the same thing about the Big East.
I'm undefeated in fights. Have I been in any? No. Thats because people know my f'ing status. Don't mess with the elite. - Miles
The Big East
I would love to see my school play Cincy or Va Tech in the ACC. I think TCU plays Virginia next year, but not sure.
The crew kept talking about how when Utah beat Pitt a few years ago, it wasn’t really an upset. Which begs the question: why does this conference still get an autobid?
"Relying on the government to protect your privacy is like asking a peeping tom to install your window blinds."
It's all about the $...

ARRGHHH
i’m still so fucking pissed about the cowboys game. this entire week is going to suck until they play again.
It's funny...
If USC went undefeated then I’m sure everyone would have them in the NC game, and they play in the PAC 10 which was dominated by the MWC this year. What if someone went undefeated in the ACC or Big East this year? Would they be in the NC game? The MWC is clearly better than those 2 conferences this year.
Look, I’m not going to sit here and say that my Utes belong in the NC game. I’m happy they get to play a very good Bama team with a chance to prove they belong. However, if they beat Bama, or can even keep it close then people better shut the fuck up about Utah not belonging. Herby put Utah in a group with Ball St. and Bosie St. Are you fucking kidding me? Obviously he hasn’t seen them play this year (shitty mtn. station deal). Utah would smash either of those teams. I’m just as pumped to see TCU and Boise St. too. I’ll bet TCU beats Boise as well. That would be huge for the MWC.
I think the Utes in college football will be viewed like Gonzaga in college basketball if they can beat Bama, and IF TCU and BYU can keep doing what they did this year then the MWC will permanetley pass the Big East and ACC in football shortly. That’s a big IF right now though.
"The only good is knowledge and the only evil is ignorance."-Socrates
The Mountain west has been a great conference this year
Much better than the Big East, ACC, and the Pac-10. Hell, I think they could give the Big 10 a good run for its money (How that conference got 2 teams in BCS games is still beyond me). Thats why I hate Automatic bids for these conferences. A 9-4 VT team does not deserve a BCS game. They don’t deserve it over a Boise State team (12-0), a 10-2 TCU team, or a 10-1 Tech team.
SLC, good luck to your Utes. TCU fan here, wish ya’ll the best, show everyone that the MWC can do work…and yet, then again, I just wonder if our kicker didn’t miss those two easy FGs how we would stack up against Bama…oh well
