Varitek reportedly rejecting arbitration
Jason Varitek reportedly will not accept arbitration from the BoSox...
There was some thought that he would accept, which would impact Boston's catcher situation...but since he's declining, they continue to be in limbo, although I'm starting to think that none of the young catchers Texas has will get dealt this offseason, making Boston pretty much moot as a trade partner...

So what
if they can’t get a good value right now for one of the younger guys, trade Laird and deal one of the younger guys later. You gain eval and development time with the younger guys, get something for Laird to clear some playing time, and you let the market for catchers hopefully improve by mid-season.

I am 100% for
just getting rid of Laird. For all the reasons you just stated. He’s not going to be here when it counts, so why keep him here when all he’s going to do is retard the development of the other 3.
I know it’s not popular, but just get rid of him (and no not for nothing, just don’t hold out for the ranch.)

that's not what you said.
Sure it sucks that the market for catchers is a little bloated right now. But to me that doesn’t equal it sucks not to trade one of the younger three.

If Varitek doesn’t end up in Boston, doesn’t make them more desperate for a catcher?

Why? They can still negotiate with/sign Varitek.
All this does is just say once and for all that he won’t accept arb.

Some people
thought Varitek would accept, which would make the Sox not necessarily need to add a young catcher this offseason.
However, he declined, so the Sox have a definite question mark at catcher, which would seem to be a good thing for the Rangers.
Due to other circumstances and the hot bat of Salty (perhaps), Adam thinks the Rangers won’t actually trade one of the three young’ns, making the Red Sox an unlikely trading partner, since all we’re offering is Laird.

Boston and Tek
I want to point out that Veritek is being advised by the Great Satan and he thinks he can get a big deal from the Dodgers. I tend to think that this motivates the Sox to really consider trading for Salty and really consider giving up Buchholz or Masterson.
by nathan_sassaman on Dec 7, 2008 9:01 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Bucholz or Masterson??
I still doubt either are available, especially Buch… just cause he declined doesn’t mean he still won’t re-sign with Boston
by Baseball North on Dec 7, 2008 9:03 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Where would you put him? Red Sox rotation is Dice K,Beckett, Lester, Wakefield, And/Or Masterson/Bucholz. The Red Sox have expressed Interest in Derek Lowe, CC Sabathia, and AJ Burnett. They also signed Tarwaza from Japan…So I would not rule out either pitcher in a trade if Veritek left for the Dodgers or asked for more than he is worth.

Yeah, heard that
In his podcast last week. Believes that Bucholz continues to live on his prefect game, and hasn’t done much since. Believes that Masterson should be kept mainly due to “playing great in the playoffs.”
Got to love Red Sox fans who believe they know everthing about baseball. For that team, its a “what have you done for me lately” stance for its fans

Varitek declining arb won’t make the Sox give up Buchholz, and most of the smart fans I know prefer Buchholz to Masterson.

The gap in talent is that wide
The gap in expected performance though isn’t. Buchholz is a much, much better pitcher than Masterson, but Masterson has already proven that he is able to do well in the Majors while Buchholz has struggled.

The Dodgers feel they are close to going the Big Game…They are in one of the weakest divisions in the National League. San Diego is dismantling, San Fran is years away, Colorado is at a crossroads, and Arizona does not have enough bats. Sign Veritek to a 4 year 40 million contract to get over the hump.

Laird will probably be a Detroit Tiger…Do you want Zach Minor or Chris Lambert? they two Major League ready pitchers the Tigers are willing to part with.
The Reds are interested, but they just sent Homer Bailey to the White Sox.
Well You would Have Teagarden and Salty to share catching and Max Ramirez to play Dh or third. I still think you will have Max and Teagarden as your catchers, since Salty will be in Boston.

Laird to Det is making progress
Rangers, Tigers Make Progress On Laird Trade
By Tim Dierkes [December 7 at 9:26pm CST]
According to Jon Paul Morosi of the Detroit Free Press, “The Tigers and Texas Rangers have made significant progress toward a trade that would send catcher Gerald Laird to Detroit and pitching prospect Guillermo Moscoso to the Rangers.” It’s not known whether the Tigers would include anyone else.
Baseball America ranks Moscoso tenth among Tigers prospects, noting shoulder woes but suggesting a high ceiling. They say he could end up a #3 or #4 starter. He’s drawn some comparisons to Jair Jurrjens.
by laxtonto on Dec 7, 2008 9:34 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
meh,
Moscoso doesn’t do much for me, but honestly I doubt Laird could bring a better return back. The catchers other teams are willing to trade are on par with Laird, imo, so trading Laird for whatever is a good thing but I wasn’t expecting a big return.

Right now
If i’m JD and at the Winter Meetings, I’m walking down to whatever room Theo is staying in and inviting myself into his room. I look at Theo, tell him that it sucks about Tek, but I say that I have 4 catchers on my team, none of which are untouchable, and am willing to trade. But to get one of those catchers, one of Masterson, Buchholz, or Bowden has to come back to Texas. I would tell him that I would rank my catchers in order and he is to rank his players in order.
I would tell him that neither one of us (JD or Theo) is to leave the room unless they come to a decision. Hell, they got all night

Thats what I mean for the rankings
I’m guessing JD would put Tea first, Salty second, MaxRam third, Laird fourth, while Theo would do Buch first, Masterson 2nd, and Bowden 3rd.
If Theo wants Tea for Bowden, due to the rankings, he would have to include more. If he wanted to do Tea for Buch, than I’m sure both GMs would look at their rankings and see it being fair for both teams, and they do that trade.
