Rangers, Tigers making "significant progress" on Laird trade
The Detroit Free Press says that the Rangers and Tigers are making "significant progress" on a deal that would send Gerald Laird to the Tigers for 25 year old pitching prospect Guillermo Moscoso, although it says it isn't known if Detroit would add anyone to the deal.
If, in fact, Homer Bailey has been dealt by the Reds, it seems like a Laird to Detroit trade may well be imminent.

has over an 8.81 ERA and over a 2.2 whip in 14 ip.
I would hope there would be someone else good in this deal.

his k/9 is pretty good with a nice batting average against. Where would you say he would slot in with our current prospects

Laird’s not exactly the bee’s knees, but I’d hope he would fetch more than a 25 year old who spent most of last season in A+ ball.

Just because a lot of people are anxious to play higher ceiling young guys doesnt mean we think laird isnt worth anything at all. I bsahed laird all the time but I dont think he just outright sucks or anything. I think hed be a great backup if he didnt have the attitude, or an acceptable starter if we didnt happen to have salty/teagarden.

Moscoso
Low 90s fastball with lots of movement, he’s been up to 94 mph, slurvy breaking ball, and a changeup
Has had TJ surgery. Is 24 years old in Double A.
Around 9 K/9 and 5 K/BB. Is somewhat of a fastball pitcher and can be prone to the flyball.
Honestly think someone else would have to be a part of the deal to make me happy.

FWIW
Moscoso just turned 25 last month.
Not that I’m a big Armando Galarraga believer, but he spent his age 24 season at the same levels that Moscoso did, and his results weren’t nearly as impressive.
That said, I’d like to see the Rangers get another prospect thrown in, even if it’s a high-risk/high-reward type who’s still in A-ball.

but for what it’s worth, T.R. Sullivan suggeste as much, and Evan Grant also
implied it by way of negation, noting, “Rangers general manager Jon Daniels said the club has not been given a directive to significantly cut payroll, but he acknowledged the team could make a deal or two that would look that way.”

Moscoso sounds like a secondary player to me.
Maybe Moscoso and Iorg would be worthwhile. I’d even be happy with two TJ guys in Moscoso and Crosby. I don’t see Moscoso alone being the winning bid for Laird when there are a few teams known to be looking hard at him.

Moscoso
maybe he’s okay…from BA
Aside from Rick Porcello and Casey Crosby, the lesser-known Moscoso may have the highest ceiling of any starter in the system. He had shoulder surgery in 2005 and missed the first six weeks in 2008 with shoulder soreness. When healthy, he threw a perfect game at short-season Oneonta in 2007 and flourished en route to Double-A last season.
Strengths: Moscoso has a quick arm and a fastball that reaches 91-92 mph with late riding action that makes it a swing-and-miss pitch. He can also use his fastball to handcuff hitters and force easy popouts. His delivery has some deception and hitters have trouble reading his pitches. He’s aggressive in the strike zone and confident on the mound.

Look at it this way
This kid is better than people are realizing. He has some control issues, but he misses bats. His stuff is legit. Now, will he ever get it? Probably not. But think about it this way: Is Laird really a starting catcher? What do you really expect in return?
This move, assuming it goes down as it stands now (which it probably won’t), has benefits beyond the player(s) coming back in return.

I think
a lot of us are unfairly biased against age.
If this guy had lower K/9 but is, say, Mark Hamburger’s age, I think there’d be a lot less complaints about him.
The way I see it, age can be an advantage in this case as it means that he’s more likely to be ready soon. Not only that, but given his injury time, there’s a significant chance that he has a lot higher ceiling than your regular 25 year old.
by FirebatM3 on Dec 7, 2008 10:37 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
well, unless your Hamburger,
who will be 22 in his first full season at A ball…
by Goyogringo on Dec 7, 2008 11:00 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Also
Despite the control issues he is having in the Winter Leagues, his splits last season were really, really good. The kid can throw the ball over the plate and still miss bats.
A potential major league reliever that can keep runners off base and strike guys out would be an excellent return for Laird.
by jparks77 on Dec 7, 2008 10:44 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Is this guy a reliever though?
Do we assume that because of his age? Because of his K/9?
The thing is, the article attributes his struggles to being forced to come out of the pen. Is there a particular reason why we view him as a BP guy and not a rotation guy?
by FirebatM3 on Dec 7, 2008 10:47 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs

hi missed half of 05 and half 06
due to his injury. 07 was a year in which they limited his innings I would imagine. the thing that worries me (and would justify getting a pretty good lower level prospect) is that he missed the first 6 weeks of 08 with shoulder soreness. So his injury history suggests that the bullpen is the best for him…

MLBTR has a Link from Rosenthal saying it's done...
Moscoso and a second prospect…
by N41D on Dec 7, 2008 11:31 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Source: Tigers acquire catcher Laird from Rangers by Ken Rosenthal
The Detroit Tigers have filled one of their prime offseason needs, acquiring catcher Gerald Laird from the Rangers for Double-A right-hander Guillermo Moscoso and a second prospect, according to a major-league source.
The deal, to be announced Monday, figures to end any chance of the Tigers signing free-agent catcher Jason Varitek, who declined salary arbitration from the Red Sox on Sunday night.
Laird, a strong defensive catcher, is a .255 career hitter with a .306 on-base percentage. He earned $1.6 million last season in his first year of arbitration, and is two years from free agency.
The Tigers also are seeking an inexpensive solution at shortstop, a position in which they are considering free agents Adam Everett and Nick Punto, with Everett the apparent preference.
Moscoso, 25, was 2-3 with a 2.42 ERA at Single-A Lakeland last season and 3-1 with a 3.12 ERA at Double-A Erie, striking out 122 and walking only 21 in 86 2/3 innings.
The second prospect in the deal is a 17-year-old who spent last season in the Dominican Summer League, the source said

Holy crap.
Some serious knee-jerking going on at the Freep story.
"WELL BOYS, THERE GOES OUR SEASON!!! IF INGE WOULD HAVE JUST PLAYED CATCHER WE WOULDNT HAVE HAD TO TRADE ONE OF OUR ONLY DECENT PITCHING PROSPECTS FOR A WEAK HITTING CATCHER!!!!
WE ALREADY HAD A WEAK HITTING CATCHER NAMED INGE!!!"
Ladies and gentlemen, the poetry of polancofan.

Well, I'm also reading troubling things on other sites.
Like from Motown Baseball forums:
Moscoso in Texas might just get ugly…..a pitcher with flyball tendancies that has a propensity for pitching up in the zone, in that ball park….not something I’d like to see if I’m a Ranger fan.

heh one of them said laird will bring "professionalism" to their catcher position
not the word I’d use for laird.
anyway personally I dont care much about where a guy throws in the zone anymore, its not like our parade of sinkerballers has been doing real well. ignore the ballpark and get the best pitcher you can. If moscoso was the best we could get for laird, so be it.
the preceding post was a great success.

heh...comment from mlbtr
Interesting how the Rangers dealing a catcher effectively ups the price on the others they have.

It's not going to happen tomorrow
Word has it the Giants are looking at Blalock (think there’s a link in the fanshots) but that’s a long, long way from Jonathan Sanchez.

Thats what I was guessing based on the matchup
I just can’t see blalock getting much with only 1 year left, doubts about being able to play 3rd in addition to injuries, and his huge home/road splits even when he is playing well.
With the return I expect he’d get, the only way I’d bother trading him is if they are willing to commit to Max DH’ing before things get too crowded with smoak and such so they can get a good mlb look at max.. and maybe use the blalock payroll for something else. Unless of course some team is crazy enough to give a lot. Or some creative package deal.

so
this seems like a fairly reasonable standard for catcher trades. this is a mid level pitching prospect who is knocking on the mlb door for a catcher that is basically a cut above backup (as the rest of the league sees him).
salty should definitely get you a major league ready talent who is closer to top prospect status.

Melo it is
Melo, a right hander from the Dominican Republic, has not pitched in the United States, but he is known for an electric fastball that averages well over 90 miles per hour

Electric fastball?
Awesome! Ever since the Rangers let Wright walk without offering arbitration, we’ve been in need of a new electrician.
