Laird to Tigers a Done Deal
Here's what MLB Trade Rumors has to say:
11:27pm: Ken Rosenthal says the Tigers acquired Laird for Moscoso and a second prospect. The second prospect "is a 17-year-old who spent last season in the Dominican Summer League." The deal will be announced Monday. Laird, a Scott Boras client, is under team control through 2010.
Rosenthal adds that the Tigers are considering Adam Everett and Nick Punto as shortstop options.
12:12am: Morosi says an agreement has been reached, and the second prospect is a pitcher.
I don't actually know anything about Moscoso, so I don't know what to think. I let myself believe we'd get better return for Laird, but whatever.
The real question? Where does he fit in the community prospect rankings?

i really think
its either Melo or Guichardo…. He turned 17 during the year

I just spent the last 15 mins researching those guys
My order of preference (not like it matters given how far away all these guys are) would be Guichardo, Melo, and Gonzales. Moscoso and a magic bean certainly is a reasonable return for Laird, I think.

Should I be mad?
I don’t even know what to think. But I feel like we’ve gotten screwed for some reason.

UT football = screwed and Laird to tigers = not screwed

Haha, nice.
But as far as the Laird deal goes, what do you base the value of the trade on? As in, what makes this a good deal?

i almost look at it as addition by subtraction
I think Laird needed to go so the younger guys can all get playing time. Plus JD got 2 pitchers for him. Granted Moscoso is old for A and AA, but he did strike out a lot of those little kids. That will give Maddux another project to work on. And who knows, this 17 yo might be a nice throw in 5 years from now.

awesome
Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?
KG: Oh yeah.
Scout: Well, he spent a lot of it on milkshakes.

anagram
You know, your posting name is an anagram of “Rayni” as in Rayni Guichardo. Perhaps a sign?
by naropean on Dec 8, 2008 12:26 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah? it's also anagram for "rainy"
and yours is an anagram for “nano rape”
What’s your point?

Nano rape?

Moscoso actually has some decent numbers.
But he’s OLD.
by philkid3 on Dec 8, 2008 12:22 AM CST reply actions 0 recs
My thoughts.
Moscoso is a nice piece, and probably about as major-league ready as the Rangers were going to get for Laird. He’s got some sexy peripherals (122 SOs, 21 BBs in 86.2 IP split between A and AA last season), plus an acceptable BABIP hanging around .300. Yeah, he’s a little old for a prospect, but overall, I think it’s a decent deal.
As I read in another thread, Moscoso and a magic bean is a nice deal for Laird.

Yeah
You know, he almost seems like the Tigers’ version of Thomas Diamond.

40 trumps all
Is Moscoso on Detroit’s 40 man roster? If not, is he Rule V elegible?

The real question:
Where does Moscoso go on our community project?!
by philkid3 on Dec 8, 2008 12:31 AM CST reply actions 0 recs
Let's put it this way:
I want to re-cast my vote for No. 1.
Kidding, of course.

Moscoso on 40
Yes he is on the 40 man roster, making this trade a 1 for 1 switch, as far as the 40 is concerned.
Depending on how good the 2nd prospect is… I think this may be an ok trade. The big thing is that the young catchers now have playing time.
Moscoso is the Tigers #10 prospect. Where would Moscoso be ranked in the Ranger’s System?

I haven't a clue.
But at a glance, I think there’s a chance I would have voted for him a poll or two ago.

To the folks over at Bless You Boys.
Guess I’ll never get to actually use this in a GDT:

terrible news
Now that laird is gone, is there anyone left who’s worthy of having “Superstar” as their song? I highly doubt that there’s anyone that’s talented enough to fill those shoes…

Laird
We once again give a known quality player away for 2 unknown, unproven players. A 25 year old with a history of arm problems and a 17 year old who we’ll probably never hear from.. Yes you could have done better JD if this trade goes down.

I'm inclined to agree with you
The Rangers love them some injured players.
The much-maligned Gerald Laird is a better player than a lot of people think.
