Giants/Texas (Blalock)
The Rangers need pitching. The Giants need offense.
They'll talk about Hank Blalock, one source said. The Giants need a power bat. The Rangers are interested in the Giants starting pitching. They like Matt Cain but the Giants aren't going to part with him for Blalock. The Rangers may target Jonathan Sanchez instead.
Is a deal possible? Who knows but these two teams are expected to talk.

Add a prospect or two and bring back Cain!!!!!!!

woohoo
brought it up in another thread but would you do
any of:
blalock/main/boscan
blalock/holland/boscan
blalock/main/beltre
for cain?
Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?
KG: Oh yeah.
Scout: Well, he spent a lot of it on milkshakes.

I can't imagine a scenario
where trading Main or Holland is justifiable…… unless names like Lincecum or Webb are available, which is pretty much a no shot possibility

is cain that far behind both of them?
main has been overhyped by many on this board (me included) and while i agree with you on holland, i disagree on main.
matt cain is what we hope michael main becomes…

No
but i’d offer a Kiker and or Beavan/Poveda
by texaschief on Dec 8, 2008 1:00 AM CST reply actions 0 recs
main is that much better than beavan?
or is kiker also that much better than boscan in your mind?

I don't know
I’ve just never really liked either Kiker or Beavan. I used to REALLY like Beavan because of his size and arm coming out of high school. But if he lost his velocity, his size doesn’t really mean a whole lot anymore.
I’ve NEVER liked Kiker. I don’t think i really have a justifiable reason for it. I just don’t like his size for a starting pitcher. I’ve never seen the kid pitch. I just have this impression of him as getting by with smoke and mirrors. I dunno.
I like Main. He’s a big, menacing figure on the mound and from what i’ve heard about Boscan, he sounds like a freak.

Also
It looks like the Rangers turned down an offer from the Mets to trade Padilla for Luis Castillo.

what would we have done with Luis Castillo
That is one of the worst trade offers, if it was true

how about...
Blalock/Andrus/Salty/Poveda?
OR
Blalock/Borbon/Salty/Poveda?
OR
Blalock/Andrus/Salty/Beaven?
by Baseball North on Dec 8, 2008 1:06 AM CST reply actions 0 recs
we need
salty for Buchholz. I know Boston said they won’t trade him, but i think that’s just posturing.
If we could bring back Cain or Sanchez in a deal for Blalock and Buchholz back for Salty and now with Moscoso coming in on the Laird deal, where would all these 4A pitchers pitch?
Let’s say we don’t get rid of Millwood and Padilla. That leaves like 14 starting pitchers for 10 spots between Oklahoma and Arlington.
Millwood
Padilla
Buchholz*
Sanchez*
Harrison
Hunter
McCarthy
Gabbard
Feldman
Hurley
Poveda
Diamond
Mathis
Mendoza
Nippert
Moscoso*

I'd rather
go after an established top of the rotation guy like Cain.. rather than an average (Sanchez) or an unknown (Buchholz)…
Cain for a group of prospects that doesn’t include CD, Main, Feliz, or Beavan
Cain, Millwood, Padilla, BMac, Harrison/Feldman———- that rotation looks pretty decent if 70-80% healthy, not a championship one but an adequate one… being close to their contract years, Milly and Paddily might put in solid campaigns to grab another long term deal
by Baseball North on Dec 8, 2008 1:44 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
while i agree with you on cain > sanchez im not so sure on cain > buchholtz
someone recently wrote that buchholz will be a very good pitcher at the ML level and i agree totally and completely
the milage on cain’s arm also worries me but if you can get him for blalock/almost any combo of amrs i do it in a heartbeat (non-holland/feliz arms that is)

What Blalock based package would you do
for Sanchez?
I wouldn’t mind a Blalock/Beavan deal, with maybe one more decent guy thrown in. Not sure who that guy would be yet.

maybe I'm not as informed as I should be...
but I don’t see enough in J.Sanchez to warrant more than a couple 15-20 prospects. I don’t wanna part with Beaven. Besides, we must remember, he’s a first rounder ;)

I would be willing to trade Blalock and Beavan for Sanchez
First, I don’t think that Blalock has an extraordinary amount of value. His salary and his recent injury history don’t help his value on the trading block. Also, trading Blalock could allow the Rangers to pursue a FA (theoretically, although I think they are really interesting in cutting costs this off-season).
Second, I also don’t think Beavan has extremely high upside (probably a decent middle to back of rotation starter). I know he was drafted really high, but his K rate in the minors has been really underwhelming. I know it has improved, but I am not convinced that he has top of the rotation potential. Maybe I am wrong though.
Third, Sanchez has top of the rotation caliber potential, and as I mentioned in the other thread, Sanchez has some pretty nice numbers outside his ERA (3.90 FIP, 111 tRA+, 4.23 tRA). He is probably a good #3 starter or so right now, and has the potential to be a #2 or better starter going forward. He is a risk (injury and continuing transition to the rotation), but then again so are Blalock and Beavan.
That trade wouldn’t be a slam dunk, but I would be pretty disappointed if they turned it down. I’d be willing to include another decent piece along with Blalock for Sanchez.

while
i like the idea of buying Sanchez now seeing how he’s been mediocre in his first 250 pro innings, his value doesnt merit a Blalock+Beaven deal. Id consider doing it, but i really think/hope we could get him for a Blalock + Kiker + throw in position player like a chad tracy or something like that. Blalock is still capable of putting up all start type numbers and maybe even reaching type A status as FA next year, who knows.
by blalock84 on Dec 8, 2008 5:35 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I think
Blalock’s value is going to skyrocket as soon as Tex signs. Everything I’ve read suggests Blalock is “plan B” for the teams who miss out on Tex. If this is correct, you have to hope Tex doesn’t sign with Boston or New York. As long as those two are bidding against each other, value for players will only go up. Then, throw in teams like the Giants who have the young pitching Texas craves and perhaps we’re talking about bringing back Buchholz, Cain or Kennedy or Hughes in a much smaller package than would’ve been necessary before the bidding war.
by texaschief on Dec 8, 2008 2:04 AM CST reply actions 0 recs
I think Blalock is plan B
for teams that don’t have something anywhere near what Teix can do. I can’t see Boston having any real interest in Blalock. Signing Teix requires them to move Youk to 3B and trade Lowell (something you’re willing to do for a stud like Teix). I don’t see them interested in doing that for Blalock. The Yankees could have some interest, but I’m guessing Hughes is way out of the recommended asking price.
I guess you heard Fat Joe left Atlantic.
by Haeger Champ on Dec 8, 2008 2:21 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
for a straight up deal
for Blalock, you’re definitely right. But if some of these teams start bidding, the package that we’d have to give up could be a lot less than anticipated.
by texaschief on Dec 8, 2008 2:29 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
perhaps.
i’m just saying that a deal with Blalock as the centerpiece can’t land Hughes.
I guess you heard Fat Joe left Atlantic.
by Haeger Champ on Dec 8, 2008 2:36 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
maybe,
but if a package centered around Blalock could land Cain, the Yankees might have to offer Hughes to stay in the running. I realize Blalock won’t land either of those guys straight up, but a package of him and a couple high prospects could.
by texaschief on Dec 8, 2008 2:49 AM CST reply actions 0 recs
No it couldn't
but a package of him and a couple high prospects could
Now, if your high end prospects are a couple of, like, Kinsler, Davis and Feliz, okay. But a deal where Blalock is a key piece isn’t even in the same universe as one that would get Cain.
by Brett Perryman on Dec 8, 2008 3:14 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I agree
Im sorry to burst everyone’s bubble however the Rangers are not going to get Buchholz, Hughes, or Cain this off-season unless we deal one of our top 5 (feliz, holland, main, andrus, or smoak – cant be traded anyway because he was recently drafted as far as i understand) in addition to a blalock or salty.

More speculation on a Cantu/Sanchez swap
http://hotstove.mlblogs.com/archives/2008/12/cantu_for_sanchez_speculation.html
Looks like there may be some truth to that rumor. If that actually happens, I would be really, really disappointed. Surely, Texas could top that offer for Sanchez.
I guess it could set up a SP for C swap between Florida and Texas. Who knows.
