Time to move on to the vote for #21.

The polls are open, so go ahead and vote in the poll at the bottom and feel free to make any suggestions and/or criticisms in the comments below.

And please don't hesitate to tell me you want on the list for next time.

NOTE: There has been some speculation as to what the criteria are for this vote. Should guys who have spent time in the bigs be involved in "prospect" discussions? For the sake of this exercise we're taking what the guys have done in the big leagues and using the BA prospect formula of 130 AB's or 50 ip. If a guy is under those limits, he's still a prospect and he goes on the poll. It's that simple.

it is fitting

that Diamond and Wieland will go no this list back to back (or at least should), and equally fitting that both just missed the top 20, as they remain my top two picks as “breakout” candidates. Of course, the definition and results of such a breakout would vary quite a bit. I think Diamond spends a large part of next season in the big league pen, whereas Wieland may not even pitch until the Spokane season starts.

Dealing with Mocosco and other in-project acquisitions.

Most of the time I’m not going to add prospects acquired during to the running of the project to the list. For the simple reason that it taints the results. If there was someone who would’ve voted for a guy like Mocosco around votes 15-20, then if we wanted to make things fair, we’d have to go back and do those votes over cause those Mocosco vote might have changed things. Given that several votes in that range were decided by 2 or 3 votes, I think there’s a good chance a high-ceiling arm like Mocosco could’ve sniped some votes in that range.

At the end of the project I’ll publish a final top 30 list and ask for personal top 30 lists and we can put him in those to get a general feeling about where the community sees him.

I could even ask for a special Mocosco ranking to see where individuals rank Mocosco and then add him as an asterisk at the end of the list with his personal list ranking in parenthesis or something if y’all wanted.

(Golson was added during the project, but it was so early I didn’t see any way possible way he could’ve gotten ANY votes based on where we were at the time we traded for him.)

Or at least that’s what I think is best.

What do y’all think?

I agree

Adding him at this point isn’t really fair – although it’s not like we’re doing anything official here. Maybe after this project is over we can do one more poll to ask folks where they would have ranked him had the been able to or something.

I have him around 19

so it really isn’t a big deal to me. If you wanted to go that route, I do like the idea of doing a separate vote on in-poll acquisitions once the project is completed. I think that would be a fair route to go.

by Goyogringo on Dec 8, 2008 8:39 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

that is

a separate vote on each new acquisition who seems destined to be top 30 in our system….

by Goyogringo on Dec 8, 2008 8:44 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

That's a good idea.

Do you mean

a simple poll saying ‘where do you think this guy should rank?’ And then have choices like top 10, 10-15, 15-20 or something like that? I’d put Mossy in the 15-20 range, depending on how confident I am in his health.

yeah something like that

with the addendum added to the top 30

by Goyogringo on Dec 8, 2008 10:34 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Yes.

I think it’s much better than voting on him right now.

Cause what if we traded for someone like, say, Michael Bowden or Lars Anderson tomorrow? Would we vote on him here in the twenties? I don’t think so. I think it makes a lot more sense just to to kind of add him on later as an asterisk via a side poll, don’t you?

So he went on.

Wieland that is. And actually, coffee can’t hurt either. Idle thought: we need to draft a pitcher named Coffee to go with Tea.
