Ruben Mateo
Holy crap, I went to look at our new top 10 list on BA. I just saw that Ruben Mateo is playing baseball 5 min. from my house. I can't believe he's playing for the Newark Bears (NJ) in the Indy league. I still remember the day when i didn't want us to trade him in a package to get Roger Clemens. I thought he was going to be the next amazing star. Boy was I wrong.

Not necessarily wrong...
He was looking very good before first base jumped out and broke his femur. He never recovered his speed after that and it just all fell apart. I think most people on this board can remember how much faith was in Mateo.
His legacy will live on however. The name Mateo will be The Face of the organization by 2030. Meet your 2030 starting shortstop…Mateo Young. Think Chris Berman will call him “Young Mateo Young”? That would be annoying.

i really thought
he would be like Tatis and reemerge later in his career as a serviceable big leaguer albeit not the star he was set to become, but that has just never happened. The early 2000s is a period of Rangers baseball that almost appears to have been cursed, yet amazingly it galvanized a community of Rangers fans that is known as among the most fervent on the internet. Weird.

Does anyone remember...
Mateo swinging at a pitch from Pedro (I believe) and getting drilled in the chest with it? I could be making this up.

I remember what you're talking about.
I’m not sure it was Pedro or that it hit him square in the chest, but he definitely swung at a pitch that hit him. I remember that shit.

There are two kinds of men in this world: Men who make jump throws, and men who wish that they were Derek Jeter so that they could make jump throws.

Oh man. Ruben Mateo.
Maybe the first prospect I was ever aware of. I use to fantasize about him being a 30/30 gold glove star in center when I was little. All my childhood fantasies about the Rangers revolved around Ruben Mateo.
I’m serious.
Oh, and the outfield of Kapler-Mateo-Greer was supposed to be awesome.

Mateo
was the first time I got the definition of five tools. Then of course we were graced with OMFT, but then, I digress.
