Rosenthal: K-Rod to the Mets

Ken Rosenthal is reporting that the Mets and K-Rod have agreed to a 3 year, $37 million deal.

He also says that the Reds have agreed to a deal with the Orioles for catcher Ramon Hernandez, with the O's picking up a chunk of Ramon's salary and getting Ryan Freel and "two prospects."

I can't imagine they're very prospecty prospects.

I know I'm going to get blasted for asking a stupid question but

Is Wagner’s injury supposed to keep him out this coming season as well or are they just moving on?

There are no stupid questions

just stupid people who ask questions.

3-37?

not that much if you ask me for the best closer in baseball. if we were a 100M salary club i’d expect us to be in on that price range.

sadly, ive given up any hope of being a financially competitive team. im not even sold that if we took the time to build like the Rays did, that Hicks would try to keep the team together with financial muscle.

probably not

but that is still a pretty good deal for a guy with his track record. im not a huge fan of the high profile FA closer signing in general, but if youre gonna do it k-rod is the kind of guy you want and at that price i might reconsider that opinion.

by Smoakin in the Boys Room on Dec 9, 2008 2:56 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

the dude has been a big time top 3 closer in baseball since he was 19 or 20

im sure some statboys will throw out whip and a bunch of other stats that i may even agree with but, the dude is big time and will put big time buts in seats and it cost not that much.

in the old days we woulda had at least one other team throw out a bid just to make the Mets have to pay over the top. i guess that didnt happen.

Really?

K-Rod is going to put butts in the seats?

by Adam J. Morris on Dec 9, 2008 3:01 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

ok your an average mets fan

would you be more likely to go see johan start and krod close in the brand new park if you were an hour away? or were tight on funds?

i sure as shit would.

this is why you would probably be a mets fan

Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?
KG: Oh yeah.
Scout: Well, he spent a lot of it on milkshakes.

as opposed to johan starting in a brand new park

with some random ass closer that may or may not be used?

really? that’s dumb

the mets lost a ton of games after the 7th last season

johan maybe not, but what about mike pelfry or main?

Closers are not the types of players that bring fans in

Hell, those types of players sometimes don’t play in the game at all. Met fans are not going to pay full price for tickets to maybe see a closer pitch

This is more about them getting a closer after their main closer (wagner) is done for the season (and maybe his career)

thats something that a fan who follows a team thats had a shit closer for too long says...

remember when we had a closer people would come to see and remember when we had a team that would put its closer in a position to closer enough to sell that concept to fans?

i’m sorry, that just never happened.

Fans come out to see wins, not players.

Especially not closers.

There are maybe a few exceptions, but K-Rod ain’t one of ’em.

Having been to my share...

…of Angels-Rangers games in Anaheim, I’ve heard several fans say that they were there to watch K-Rod close out the win. That could be interpreted in two ways: putting butts in the seats, or willing to sit in So Cal traffic to watch the guy, since they were already there anyway…

Personally, there’s no closer in baseball I’d LESS like to see, but casual fans do seem to like his antics.

Are the Mets really worried about putting butts in seats?

They’re not struggling to fill their stadium and I doubt they’re signing guys with the idea of boosting attendance.

by cgolden on Dec 9, 2008 3:52 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

they have a new stadium, the yankees arent the talk of the town

what better time to make a splash and gain the attention of the town?

use your imagination and marketing skills and figure it out.

Yankees

No matter what you hear, the Yankees are always the talk of the town in New York when it comes to baseball. With a new stadium themselves, there’s no way the Mets can overtake them.

for what it's worth

it is probably going to be 4-51, as there is supposedly an easily reachable fourth year vesting option, so long as he stays healthy. i actually like the deal for both sides, and I think more deals should be constructed this way.

by clark on Dec 9, 2008 4:01 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

No he's not the best closer in baseball,

but I assumed it would have taken more than that to get K-Rod.

Good move to get K-Rod away from my TV screen

If I had to watch his “I won the lottery” celebrations one more time, I might have had an aneurysm.

if the Angels

end up missing out on K-Rod, Teixeira, and Sabathia this offseason, that will be a huge victory for the Rangers in and of itself.

K-Rods arm will completely rip off his body in May with that violent delivery.

i was trying to remember his name. he was the talk of their bp last season with all eyes on him as the future closer.

i thought he was badass when we played them and i dont think id mess with shields.

The Angels were definitely smart to let K-Rod walk.

He was on my AL only fantasy team pretty much all year, so I know about his beastliness.

But I still think they’re taking a mighty big risk handing over closer duties to such a raw young kid.

I guess the figure they still have Shields as a fallback if the kid fails, but, still.

Surprised the mets got him for cheaper. Oh well, take his overrated celebration to new york and be done with it

great line from the o's SBN site
Our team is a big gigantic mess right now, with six outfielders, no catcher and no shortstop, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

They have a catcher. His name is Matt Weiners or something. I hear he’s pretty okay at baseball.
