Colony collapse disorder...
has to do with stressors.  There are all sorts of different stressors on bees.  The last time there was a widespread collapse of colonies was around the turn of the 19th century, which leads me to believe that it is neither unique to the 21st century nor permanent.

If you wiki "colony collapse disorder" there is some interesting reading on the subject.

There's also a good article in a National Geographic from last year about North America prior to Old World honeybees.
