way OT: what type of wallet do you use?

UPDATE: thanks for the great response -- looks like this is a topic that's important to a lot of us. Many people keep their phone and keys in the same pocket, which I've never wanted to do because of the scratching risk (especially now that I own an iPhone!).

Also, wow -- I'm shocked by how many people carry pocket knives.

I've ordered the Executive Leather All-Ett last night and will see how it works in my back pocket.

After reading all the responses, I'm intrigued by the idea of a front-pocket wallet. If the All-Ett doesn't work out I'll return it and go shopping at a Fossil store (this one looks cool).

-------------------------------------

I know it's really random, but there's no baseball to talk about, so...

Star-divide

I've always kept my wallet in my back-right pocket, but I saw a chiropractor recently who urged me to not keep it there, as it keeps me off-balance and not good for my (already not great) posture.  I'm realized my current wallet is becoming uncomfortable when I sit on it for an extended time, so it's probably time for a change anyways.

The problem is that I have a pretty set system:

-keys in right pocket
-iPhone in left pocket
-wallet in back pocket

So what is do you guys do?  What is your system?  I've always assumed everyone keeps their wallets in their back pockets, but researching on The Google I'm finding a whole category of wallets called "front pocket wallets", which are generally very slim and could probably fit in the same pocket as my cell phone.

I may order an All-Ett which is supposed to be a super-slim back-pocket wallet (which I found about here and here, and which is getting rave reviews from every user review I'm finding online).

Wallet
When I first moved to NYC I started carrying my wallet in my front left pocket.  Initially, I was overly cautious of potential pick-pockets.  But after I got into the flow, I just decided to keep it there.  I carry a shoulder bag everywhere I go so I have more room for keys etc...Don't call it a purse.  It's a NYC thang.

Plus, on occasion, the wallet in the left pocket creates the image of a much larger bulge.  That helps when you are trying to impress a girl who likes guys with bulges that look like wallets.

it's european
I actually carry a messenger bag most times, which are really popular here in San Francisco.

Still, neither my phone nor keys are ever going to go there, because those are two things I always need with me, even when I don't have my bag.

My system
Keys and Swiss Army knife in left pocket, wallet and phone in right pocket (sometimes I put my phone in that extra small pocket above the main one on the right side, the one meant for pocketwatches). I can't stand the idea of sitting on my wallet, and I figure it makes me ever so slightly less likely to be pickpocketed. My wallet is leather, but is thinner than the one pictured for comparison on the All-Ett site. I might have to look into that wallet, though... although my current one also has plastic pages inside of it for pictures, etc. I keep my driver's license in it so if I have to show ID (like when using a credit card) I don't have to pull the ID out.

I just don't keep too much stuff in my pockets
I carry my keys and my knife in my right front pocket, my wallet in my left back pocket, and my lucky quarter in my left front pocket.

I don't have a cell phone (if I did, I'd clip it on my belt - I don't care if that supposedly looks bad), and I lost my knife, so I haven't been particularly weighed down lately. I also try not to overload my wallet with receipts or anything else that really doesn't need to be in there, and try to keep it as thin as possible. Another thing is I don't carry much loose change, if any - which really helps maximise pocket space.

a cheap fossil front pocket wallet. I usually throw it in my bag, or my right front pocket. I hate having stuff in my pockets; so usually it's on my desk while I'm working.

I know pictures are sentimental, but how much stuff do you really need to carry?

I have an ID, credit  card, debit card and health insurance card and minimal cash all in my money clip.

My brother-in-law uses one of those binder clips you can find at work.

I have a...
front pocket wallet as well.  I guess it's actually a suit wallet (money clip on one side with credit card slots in the middle and on the other).

It's very small, so it works well.

My system (I should state that I'm a lefty):
Left pocket: Keys & work phone
Right pocket: Wallet & personal phone
Back pockets: Random things, but usually receipts

This is basically what I have....I like it cause it's VERY thin.

I'm very much
a wallet minimalist.  I replaced my George Costanza wallet with the Big Skinny:  http://www.bigskinny.net/

I had a sciatic nerve issue from my big wallet and the Big Skinny has made all the difference.

I've had it about 2 years now and it still works great.  The trick is to only keep what's essential.  I use a business card holder for everything else - and keep it at home.  If I'm going to Costco, I grab the Costco card, if I'm going to Kohl's, grab the Kohl's card.  Otherwise my Big Skinny consists of my ID, 2 credit cards, 1 debit card, gym membership, and some cash.  Less is more.

My system:
left pocket - keys
right pocket - cell phone, chapstick, and a tiny bottle of Purell (I'm a germophobe)
back right pocket - wallet

by neatfreakgeek on Feb 22, 2008 9:11 AM CST reply actions

Big skinny
that wallet is just about exactly what i've been searching for!
Thin but has lots of room for cards, and a window view for ID.

need to replace my current wallet, it's too bulky and the way its designed and how i sit on it has started bending some cards.

Minimalist
I also abandoned my Costanza model about three years ago.  I simply started using a black binder clip.  It works great.  Now I can carry my keys and phone in the front left pocket and my wallet in my right pocket.  Also makes for a conversation starter when with new clients.

I'd like to add a question to the discussion
I have a company issued Blackberry (88xx something I believe).  Full QWERTY keyboard.  It's larger than most of the new ones.  I refuse to carry it on my belt -- so it goes in the front pocket.  But it's terribly difficult to sit (drive, dine, etc.) with it in the pocket. And even harder to access when a call or email comes in.  The obvious answer is to take it out when sitting, but then I'll leave it somewhere. Anyone figured this one out?

Jacket or coat
70% of the time I'm wearing one so that's where I go. All the coats I get have a little inside pocket towards the top that I use, and of course jackets have the same thing. If I'm not wearing one I'll just put it in my pocket and take it out at the office or put it on the table if I'm eating or whatever. It might look arrogant (hey - look at me! I'm so important I have to carry this!) but whatever.

How big is your wallet
if it causes back problems?  And I'm having a very difficult time imagining what kind of posture would actually result in this problem.  I keep my wallet in my left back pocket and it never impinges on my posture.  Maybe you just need shallower pockets or plastic surgery on your butt.

back problems
when i first went to the doc with back problems first question he asked me was what side i keep my wallet on. it's only an issue when you sit, if your wallet is bulky it throws things outta whack when you sit down.

I'm a traditionalist
I carry a big damn wallet in my back right pocket, which includes my business cards, others' cards, cash, credit cards, ID, hunter's safety card, fishing license, insurance card, pages ripped from a phone book just for the hell of it, etc.

Front pockets vary. Keys are always front right. The rest is knife, carmex, blackberry (unless in a jacket pocket) and chew (relax - they're Bandits; I'm health conscious). Phone on the belt, not because I like it there but because it's always on vibrate and that's the only way I'll always notice it "ringing."

knives
Not to get even more offtopic but i noticed a lot of you guys carry knives. Most people i know seem to think it's a little odd that i usually carry one.

Front left pocket, at work its a swiss army because thats not intimidating to people. When i'm out and about it's usually a benchmade or a spyderco.

Interesting comment
If people at work are intimidated by your knife, then you should seriously rethink your people skills.

I've had the same knife since I was 10 or so. My dad got the same one for himself and we've both carried them for the last 25 years.

well
its not that i personally intimidate people with a knife, but a swiss army knife i guess you can say is more socially acceptable. You dont get as many strange looks if you pull out a swiss army knife to open something than if you pull out a quick opening pocket knive.

Only reason i even bring it is for opening packages, and its handy to have when you need to poke holes in the top of a microwave dinner.

It's funny how many of us
have such developed systems.  I'm not surprised though, most men are like that...

I just use a standard bi-fold wallet, it's a lot thinner than ones I've had in the past, it doesn't have any flaps for pictures, or the flap for the drivers license.  On a personal note... those flaps for the drivers license, with the plastic/clear cover suck ass!  One of those ruined my old drivers license, just rubbed all of the ink off, my picture was ghosted into the plastic, you could seriously still see my face after I took the license out.

At any rate, I typically keep some cash, receipts, checks to be deposited, credit and debit cards, license, student ID (which is a debit card), some business cards which is stupid... and other store cards... blockbuster, albertsons, supercuts, etc.

I used a money clip that had the flat side for cash, and the thin pocket for cards when I was in high school for a couple of years.  But the one I had back then was one of the really crappy generic men's gift ones, so it wasn't all that special.

But yeah, my system...

tri-fold man
I prefer a slim tri-fold with the stand-alone see thru id flap, so when ya go to da club, just whip it out!!! i gotta clean it out once a week for all the receipts and business cards i get.

Quit carrying a wallet in my back pocket when I was around 13(turned 31 4 weeks ago). Too many friends/punks grab it back in school. It goes in the front right pocket at all times. I can barely stand carrying a checkbook in my back right, and there's never anything in the back left (except maybe a girls hand). The front left was used for Copenhagen cans for 16 years, but I quit on my 30th, so now it usually keys or the phone (or smokes & lighter). If I'm wearing a coat/jacket, the phone will be in a pocket somewhere on it.

And when I have one before I lose it, a pocket knife goes straight down next to the wallet. I prefer the Smith & Wesson models with the clip to hook on the pocket. They come from the factory razor-sharp.

Hope this helps!

I'm definitely going to switch to:

as I usually open doors with my right hand and answer calls with my left hand.

I also might switch my wallet to a front-wallet since my current one is dying on me....

Also, I don't get the magnetic belt clip connected to a credit card carrier?

Won't that cause some issues with the credit card?

Great Topic!
When I moved to China I had to buy a new wallet, because my sturdy one from America wasn't quite large enough for Chinese Yuan notes which are taller than dollars.  I got one that is leather, has two money slots (so I keep receipts in the back as well as currencies for countries that I travel to outside of China), and Chinese yuan in the front.  I love it.

I'm a wallet in left pocket with phone, keys in right and change in back right.  The back left pocket is reserved for papers or handouts I'm given, and stuff like that which I can fold up and keep in there.  I hate the idea of keeping my wallet in my back pocket simply because it makes sitting uncomfortable.
