OT: What would you do?

Okay - so, my company is having me take over new regions and gave me three options on where to live.  They are paying all moving costs and putting me in corporate housing for 2 months.  I want to get the LSB feedback.

Option 1:  Stay in Tampa (house)
Option 2:  Live in Dallas (condo)
Option 3:  Live in Los Angeles (apartmnet)

I have a house right now that is by the beach and affordable in Tampa, so, if I move, those are the realistic living options based off of what I pay now to live comfortable. I've lived in LA/SD most of my life, and never really seen or been to Dallas...

Opinions?

Stay in Tampa...
of course I'm biased, that's where I'm from.

As someone who has also never spent a lot of time in the DFW area, I might be tempted to give it a shot though.

Don't understand...
why you'd consider Dallas or LA over a house near the beach in Tampa unless:
  1. You are tired of blue hairs.
  2. Afraid of hurricanes.

As a lifelong resident of DFW
Don't pick Dallas.  It's an ok place to live but it's really pretty generic with very little interesting stuff to do.

However, if you live in Tampa now and used to live in LA then a change might be nice.  Just don't expect too much.

Big D
Lived in Tampa for 8 years and DFW 25 years. Just loved the years in Tampa but I would select DFW over anywhere in FLA except Sanibel (spelling?) Island.

Tampa has a great airport, the cost of living is similar, clubs (women) and restaurants are better in DFW. The traffic is overall and generally better in DFW and much better in FW.

LA is too expensive even if you are compensated.

Alternative
Maintain your home in Tampa during the fall and winter and take the condo in Dallas for the spring and summer.  Rent out your Tampa place while your away and spend the winters there.  Watch the Rangers in the summer and avoid hurricane season.

I live in Kansas so I don't have any idea what I am talking about, but it sounds fun. Even living at the beach gets old after awhile.

New York # 1- nothing compares.
San Francisco # 2- stunning and cosmopolitan.
Chicago # 3-amazing restaurants and nice down to earth people
San Diego # 4 -awesome quality of life
Honolulu # 5-a little boring for me but still
paradise.
Austin # 6 - love the hills and progressive spirit

I'm a native Texan and love Texas but if I had to live in Texas again it would be Austin.

interesting you rank chicago so high.  I'm living there right now and its nice but I guess I haven't found my niche.  and overall, the weather is pretty prohibitive - worst weather on your list.

and, your list skews too much to big metropolises.  thhere are some smaller cities that are generally held in high regard

Oh yeh Ab you live in an amazing city..

I always love going to Chicago. Of course I never go in the winter time :). Yeh that's my big city list, because that's the kind of energy I like right now. For smaller cities I'd have to say:

1- Aspen - what a beauty!
2- Montauk, Long Island - semi-secluded and beautiful on the tip of long island.
3- Pensacola - Gorgeous beaches and not overrun with people yet, although some call it L A -
lower Alabama..
4 Fire Island Pines- Homes on a small island, where there are no cars and as gay as it gets :)
5 Jamestown, N.Y. -I'm partial I went to H S there. Lucille Ball was born there. Lots of greenery and lakes.

A lot of it is a shithole and it seems pretty overrun with people to me. I try to avoid the Redneck Riviera these days.

Pensacola...

yeh true a lot of it is not good, but a lot of most cities are not good. I have a friend who bought a house there years ago and his property value has skyrocketed. The red necks are slowly being run out of town. It has great potential. It's an up and coming hot spot. I never met Natalie Merchant but saw her perform in Jamestown before she became famous.

this isn't entirely true
i know lots of people that live there and if you get passed the part where you're never too far from an abandoned house, its a pretty awesome place to live.  it has a ton of cultural districts, lots of food, lots of fanfare and parades, block parties every couple of weeks...

it's definitely city livign and even nice neighborhoods look a little beat up but otherwise, hell of a place to live.  I wouldnt' mind ending up there

Yeh I love New Orleans...

I'm sure you're fine in certain neighborhoods. Although not THAT fine but nevertheless you can't beat the food and the FUN. Talk about a party town! It doesn't get much more decadent. I've seen things go down in that city that would make Heidi Fleiss cringe. Of course I could never live there because when I visit I somehow always find myself with a cocktail in  my hand at some club as the sun is coming up. I'd be a 500 lb alcoholic in no time!

Well then
we hear vastly different things from our respective acquaintances.

That city is dirty as hell and I renew my objection to ever possibly living there.

Great place to visit, though. Awesome food (Commander's Palace is fantastic... their bread pudding soufflé desert is almost worth the trip by itself), awesome touristy places to go, gambling, strip clubs galore, it seems you're never more than 10 feet from a bar, and plus it's one of the few places in the world where I can drink those delicious fruity icy liquor drinks that I love without feeling like my buddies are gonna make fun of me for a month for not getting a PBR. "They have PBR on tap, dude!" "That's great. My Hurricane is delicious, thank you."

You haven't lived until you've had barbecue shrimp at Pasqual Manale's and had a beignet at Cafe Du Mond. I don't know if Manale's in the GD is still open or not but..what amazing bbq shrimp. Seattle is awesome too minus the rain. And so close to Vancouver which is even more gorgeous where I want to move some day.

I loved living in Manhattan..

but my street in the West Village on Perry and Washington was unlike most of the city. The buildings were only a few stories at most,so there was lots of natural light. The streets lined with bricks, and Magnolia Bakery was a few blocks away. It's the bakery that I think has been seen on sex and the city a few times. A very old fashioned style bakery with an eclectic staff with lines going around the block. Some streets on the West Village are sooo charming and when it snows even moreso. Buy yeh I've seen some amazing lofty spaces in W'burg if you don't mind taking that wretched what is it? L Train?

I love their frozen margaritas and just about everything on the menu, sitting outside is fun.
There is a tiny Italian restaurant on Hudson and Perry (west side of Hudson) that is really good and cheap. It just has a few tables inside but it is really good and authentic. Dallas
I've lived in Dallas for almost six months now, and I can't stand it.  Everything is too spread out, and people here seem to have enormous egos.  It's also expensive if you don't want to live in a high-crime area.

And maybe this is just my picky personality, but I can't seem to find anything fun to do here.  Sports and drinking seem to be the two pastimes in this area, but I'm getting too old to have fun drinking, and I only care to see the Rangers... too bad that's an hour's drive away with traffic.

by chief on Feb 23, 2008 4:20 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

expensive?
are you serious? have you seen the cost of housing in dfw vs other parts of the country?

spread out is definitely an issue, everything here spreads out not up. but thats part of the reason you can get some nice houses really cheap in the northern  areas

Whatever you do DO NOT COME TO LA
Trust me, LA sucks. I live in SoCal, and Orange County is bad enough. But LA County is a pit. Smog, gangs, traffic - trust me man, do not move to LA. And I can't really reccomend Orange County either. The only place you really wanna live in California these days is somewhere up north. Other than that, this state blows.

I myself want to get out of here ASAP - in other words as soon as I save up the money to do so. Then I'm going to Texas, which has been my lifelong dream so far.

lived in dfw for about 16 years before moving to san diego late last year and honestly speaking i think san diego and all of california as a whole is way overated.  i went up to LA/hollywood and thought dallas was 10 times better and cleaner than LA.  You cant drive anywhere in that city without seeing gang writing on the walls.  I would like anyone who thinks SD is such a great city to tell me why?  please don't say the beach because i admit the beach is nice but what about SD makes it better than Dallas?  i mean it is very pricy out here.  I'm paying over 1 thousand dollars for a freaking one bedroom here!!  plus ppl in california can't drive!

San Diego.
I'm horribly ashamed to be agreeing with The Ahmad, but I am siding with him here.

San Diego loses out because the local people here are morons.  Head in the clouds, flaky, shallow people.  The type of people who stand in a long checkout line at the store just because other people are standing in line, and then glare at you for walking right up to the empty checkout right next to it...

And I know people complain about drivers everywhere, but they are really bad in San Diego (and I'm pretty lenient on drivers - I love driving in LA and Houston...) Few days go by where I don't have to honk at someone for either not going when the light turns green or drifting into my lane going 10 mph slower than me.

SD is a great city - perfect weather, decent restaurants, good beaches and mountains nearby.  Wonderful place to visit.  But it is too expensive (rent, gas, groceries, taxes, etc) and there are too many problems that you start to notice when you've lived here long enough.  Any major Texas city easily beats it for bang for the buck.

I've lived in both DFW and LA (though not for long in LA).

DFW was kind of nice growing up, but it wasn't anything special. Only thing it had going for it was that people were nice and friendly.

LA, I haven't lived in an even longer time, but I've heard so many horror stories living up in the Bay Area (about smog, traffic - 45 minute drives to get to a place 10 miles away/no real public transit) that you couldn't pay me to live there permanently. Plus, it has the same issue that all the rest of coastal California has, it's insanely expensive to live there.

OTOH, in parts of LA, there are so many wannabe actresses, that I've heard it's much easier to get hot women there?

I've never lived in Tampa, so I can't really compare it to the others, but a beach-front property is really nice (but I love the ocean/sea). Only really big downside I can see from the outside, is that it might get really muggy (like Houston). I hate muggy.

Good luck with your choice!
