By JON PAUL MOROSI

FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITER

The Tigers are close to acquiring right-hander Armando Galarraga from the Texas Rangers in exchange for outfielder Michael Hernandez, in a move that would provide Detroit with additional pitching depth.

Fabio Castro
He was a former rule 5 pick by the rangers back in 06 i think.  He was mishandled by buck and the rest of the rangers who wouldnt give him enough playing time, even though he did relatively well in each situation he was put into.  Ultimately he was traded for Daniel Haigwood.  Overall, it was a bad series of events, as he was DFA'd just like Armando was.

I know who he is
My point was - is it really a big deal?

by AZranger on Feb 4, 2008 11:29 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Im not suprised,
galarraga is nothing more than a middling reliever, imo.  Maybe if he starts being a little more consistant than it would be a bad trade but we get someone who will probably never make it in the long run and we clear up a roster spot.

No big deal
Im sure both players will not amount to very much.

The only reason to be mad at this is the fact that we still have Scott Feldman on the team, and as we all know, he is the worst player in the MLB. So thats the only thing that makes this sour.

I think we're saving him just in case we get into any brawls this year.

He's a useful guy to have around, IMO.

I think there is a good chance that Galaragga becomes a quality ML reliever.

I'm
not sure that it's a good chance, but I agree that he seems to have some chance.  More of a chance than  Hernandez has of becoming a starting outfielder.

well...
that gamble didn't pay off!  "Hey, let's DFA him b/c his value is high right now...and we're sure to get teams in a bidding war!"
didn't quite work out that well...
Wow!  What a crappy trade!

by ChrisH on Feb 4, 2008 7:40 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Actually...
Considering this was a trade the resulted from a DFAing, I think this is a decent deal. This Hernandez guy looks like he could have some serious power on him... almost a Chris Davis lite... move him to first base, and he might have some value.

Michael Hernandez
He didn't make BA's top 30 prospects in a system that where Francisco Cruceta was number nine.

From BA Q&A on the Tigers
Q:       Lee Oppenheimer from Grand Rapids, Mi. asks:
Is there still a future in the organization for Brent Clevlen, and is Mike Hernandez on the prospect radar at all?
 A:

Moderator: Clevlen has to make more contact. That's it, really. He's already an above-average big-league defender. Thanks for reminding me about Hernandez. I forgot to mention him in response to the "sleeper" question earlier. He's a great story. The Tigers signed him out of a tryout camp -- which almost never happens to a right-handed-hitting outfielder. He just hits. He doesn't really have a defensive position, which is his biggest weakness. He should be at Erie this year.

<sarcasm>awesome, I love guys who supposedly can "just hit" but have no defensive position!</sarcasm>

by Brandon Wilson on Feb 4, 2008 8:07 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Well, if that's the case...
Meet the new Jason Botts. The lack of defense is definite concern... but this guy does look like he has some serious power. Just stick him at first base, and be done with it. If that's what the Rangers do, I'll be he has a better shot at making it to the Majors than John Mayberry Jr.

funny
He's a lot closer to Mayberry (offensively) than he is to Botts.
This Hernandez guy is 3 days younger than Mayberry. And their career batting lines are really not that different. Biggest difference is that one is a former first-round pick while the other one went undrafted.

for finding that, interesting.

Who cares
Galarraga sucks.  Not going to pitch in a meaningful role for a championship team.  Neither will several other choices to take off the roster.

Obviously other teams don't think he's very good either.

Just like Fabio Castro, a lot of hand-wringing about nothing.  Remember how upset everyone was about Sam Narron?  Andy Pratt?  Making a prospect list doesn't mean much at the end of the day.  Hell, Mario Ramos was a bigtime guy at one point.

We couldn't find anybody who wanted Laird or Byrd
Well, actually, the Cubs wanted Byrd, but JD effed that up.

JD probably thought he could find a package deal for Armando and Laird/Byrd when he DFA'd Galarraga, but he obviously couldn't, so he was forced made this deal at the 11th hour.

how do you know this?
no one wants byrd/laird and JD f'd up the chicago deal.....

by SlowHand on Feb 5, 2008 10:48 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

How do I know that?
Pretty simple... Lardo and Byrdman are still with this team. If anybody wanted Laird, and if JD hadn't have tried to make rediculous demands of the Cubs, Gerald would be stinking it up somewhere else, and we'd have a new 26 y/o LF, instead of a 30 y/o 4th OF who's had exactly one good year.

I think they want to hang onto Byrd
in case both Bradley and Hamilton can't play for a while with injuries.  I think they'd have to really like the return to deal him right now.

Armando Gallaraga
Isn't he 40 something and wasn't he with the Rangers back in 2001?

by Agreen07 on Feb 4, 2008 8:55 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

That was Andres Galarraga, veteran first baseman.
This is Armando Galarraga, 26 y/o pitcher, accquired from the Washington Nationals as a part of the deal for Alfonso Soriano.

but it wasn't really funn

by ab03 on Feb 4, 2008 9:12 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

so if he's just a hitter
with no defensive position, I don't mind at all - basically, you're hoping one of Max Ramirez, Botts and this new guy can stick as our cheap, long-term answer at DH.  And really, regardless of what everybody else thinks of Botts, I think we've got a pretty good shot now of ONE of those guys becoming that.  If nothing else, give us 20+ HR, 80+ RBI and put the ball in play.

plus, as I've mentioned before, just counting our Latin American prospects, we've got a lot more in the cupboard than we've ever had before: Mendoza, Vazquez, Poveda, Batista, Castillo, Font, Pimentel, Quintero, Grullon, Feliz, De los Santos - and it really doesn't look with Hurley and Harrison coming up later this year as if Galarraga was going to get a chance.

Bleh
Comparison:

Mayberry:
A+: .230/.314/.496 in 277 PA (64 K = 23.1% K/PA)
AA: .241/.307/.453 in 271 PA (62 K = 22.9% K/PA)

Hernandez:
A+: .260/.326/.478 in 478 PA (102 K = 21.3% K/PA)
AA: .250/.282/.469 in 71 PA (15 K = 21.1% K/PA)

Mayberry's a fairly similar comp. So, I guess if you like Mayberry's chances, you'll like this deal.

Seeing as I don't like Mayberry's chances, I don't like this deal.
