Daniels getting a contract extension

The concerns I had that Nolan Ryan coming in might mean wholesale front office changes?  They may be unfounded...

T.R. Sullivan reports that Jon Daniels is getting a contract extension...

This, I think, makes sense, given that the team is in long-term rebuilding mode, and is making moves with an eye towards competing in 2010 or so...it doesn't make a ton of sense to ask your g.m. to make moves with an eye towards the future when he's working on a short-term deal.

Please spare us the "Hicks just likes Daniels because he's keeping the budget low" comments in response to this post.  That schtick has gotten old, and I'm tired of reading it.

I think it should last long enough to where
we could see this years draft class is in arlington.  He is rebuilding this team from the bottom up and should be able to continue that without any fear.

Gee
Aren't you the same person who said we needed Nolan Ryan here so that he could tell Daniels not to trade Kinsler and Saltalamacchia for chewing gum?

by Wonko.The.Sane on Feb 6, 2008 4:57 PM CST up reply actions

Just used it as an example,
that's all.  Im sure we could have used Nolan here when Agone and C.Young were traded.  Trades like that.  Im hoping Nolan does have a better read on future trades or at least could help JD make some better trades.  Of course JD can make great trades, but still he makes terrible ones just as much.  See the recent trade of A.Galarraga.

...for a spare outfielder.

advantage: Tigers

by oc on Feb 6, 2008 5:28 PM CST up reply actions

Ok
So the tigers won a race in the special olympics.

Sure they won the race, but they are still retarded.

by SaltyGoesYard on Feb 6, 2008 5:31 PM CST up reply actions

And if they hadn't made the trade
The Tigers would have gotten him anyhow. Advantage - team that got something when the alternative was nothing.

if you're trading pitching...
...you better get pitching back.

by oc on Feb 6, 2008 5:40 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah
If you're trading away good pitching.  In this case, we were trading a 26 year old rookie with an inconsistent fastball and questionable control.  We're lucky we got anything.
I lack the required experience to be an intern.

please...
...four teams were after him.  he wasn't going to be released for nothing.

you're selling short on galaragga.

by oc on Feb 6, 2008 6:19 PM CST up reply actions

but then
you are assuming that three other teams offered pitching - or pitching better than the hitting we got back.  what if we had gotten the equivalent of Derek Lee back?  should we have taken it?

If the argument is that Gallaraga shouldn't have been DFA'd, it's understandable.  People can champion DFA'ing Feldman instead.

But there is no sense in criticizing the return we got for Gallaraga.  Why do you think JD would have made an inferior deal?

by ab03 on Feb 6, 2008 7:33 PM CST up reply actions

no.
We traded Loaiza + to get MY. I can't think of anyone outside Toronto that's upset about that trade. That may be a good general rule of thumb (which I would disagree with), but at least don't make it sound so written in stone.

As for the current trade, 2 years from now, it won't matter. I seriously doubt either player will amount to much.

Rangers got pitching back....
Darwin Cubillian came with Young in that trade.  I'm not sure who that helps in this arguement though.

by bdavison94 on Feb 6, 2008 6:17 PM CST up reply actions

Well....
I would say "who cares" about the trade in general.  A non-event for both teams to me.  Neither one will get much of anything out of that trade.

by bdavison94 on Feb 6, 2008 6:24 PM CST up reply actions

well
I'm not too sure how much that helped the rangers.

All I wanted to say was as long as you feel you can bring in something more valuable, you should make the trade.

Again, I don't think that happened in this trade, but he was already DFA'd, so we would have lost him anyways. I don't see why anyone would be up in arms about it.

Oh yeah, great news about JD.

Nolan
Maybe this will cool the heads of all the chicken littles who let their imaginations get away with them. There was never any reason to worry about Daniels aside from conspiracy mongering and rank speculation.
But that river of tears has dried for all of us.

Nice timing
It could mean a couple things (both are good). Maybe that was one of the first things Nolan wants to do is get JD an extension. Maybe it's Nolan's way of saying that JD's role as GM won't be interfered with. It also could just be a way for Hicks to prove to JD that his role hasn't changed.

This makes me feel a lot better about hiring Nolan. I wasn't unhappy about it [Nolan's Chuck Norris if Chuck would toughen up a little], just a little nervous.

Remember Red, hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies.

+1
That was my only concern about hiring Nolan, was possibly losing JD, and seeing the rebuilding movement go down the toilet. But now it seems the exact opposite is going to happen: Nolan is here to help with the rebuilding movement.

So I'm extremely happy about both signings, especially the latter. Maybe Nolan can help put this team on the "Express to sucess"? Okay, that wasn't really funny.

Welcome back, Nolan... we missed ya, buddy.

Good...
Nolan is fine as a figurehead but I don't want JD always looking over his shoulder in fear of losing his job. This allows JD to continue to build this team for the future. He can focus on what will be best for the team long-term rather than just trying to make a move to get a couple extra wins to save his job.

OT: National Signing Day
Any thoughts on Texas missing out on Darrell Scott today?  I really thought with Charles' decision to go pro that he would sign with Texas.  That leaves them with McGee starting next year?

LBrooks this means you(and a couple of others)....it's getting as old as Sharky's threads/posts....a matter of fact, it's a lot more old than Sharky's threads/posts......a lot of LSBer's keyboards have been soaked with vomit after reading your JD threads/posts.......not trying to be mean, just stating the obvious

Okay.  Try this on for size:

Hicks keeps extending Daniels for "peanuts" so he won't have to eat a big one (like he did with Hart and Buck) when he fires him.  lol
