Cockfighting in DR: J. Marichal and Pedro M.
Apparently someone posted a video on YouTube earlier today, which depicted Juan Marichal and Pedro Martinez cockfighting each other. Well, to be exact, it was their roosters doing the fighting...to the death.
Obviously, YT (instructed by their corporate overlords--Google) yanked the video soon after it went up, but a few people got screenshots beforehand: http://homerderby.com/archives/1828
I don't see this as being nearly as bad as dogfighting, but I'm not sure why I think that way. Maybe because a rooster will never fetch me a beer from the fridge?

cock fighting
is it legal over there?
if so, then i don't see pedro getting in much trouble.

i'm weighing in
and i think cockfighting is as bad.
public sentiment is different. dogs > chickens
and there aren't legal issues here. cockfighting is legal in the DR.
do i think that makes it any better? legally, yes. morally? no.

yeah
but it's still bad.
we can't use a "cultural differences" argument here to justify it. that doesn't work for vick and shouldn't work for people in DR.

Exactly my point
Makes sense to me that those that were appalled by the Vick case should be equally horrified in this instance, but they don't appear to be reacting the same way.

but i told you the differences
just being at a cockfight and showing that you don't think its a big deal is not going to garner outrage.
clinton portis basically said it wasn't a big deal and didn't get much of a response

re:
Kramer: Only in the United States.
Jerry: It's inhumane.
Kramer: Jerry, it's not what you think.
Jerry: It's two roosters pecking at each other!
Kramer: What? I thought they had gloves and helmets. You know, like American Gladiators

Cockfighting and Dogfighting are ..
EQUALLY as disgusting and vile how could you not see that?
by LAMuscleFag on Feb 7, 2008 3:38 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
I dunno...
My attitude is that hunting should be legal as long as
- it's done sustainably
- only to control the population
- and the meat is always eaten

What does cockfighting ..
have to do with hunting? Placing two innocent animals in a cage to brutalize each other to the death with metal swords on their claws has nothing to do with hunting. That's barbaric and solely done as a form of sick entertainment.

I was just making a more generalized statement

Well .....
I have to agree with you on the marriage restrictions being barbaric.

let's put it this way
cockfighting - we kill them (in a lot of situations in VERY bad ways) and eat them
so right off the bat, it's like bullfighting to me...something I think could be understandable. I think it's wrong, no doubt. But you're simply not going to have the outcry as you would if it were cat fighting, with cats that weren't declawed, and were raised as predators, not house cats. Just the same, you wouldn't have anywhere near as much outcry if there were somehow pig fighting matches

You know what I enjoy? Those "lion vs. tiger" videos they have - it's nature, so you don't feel wrong about watching it, and it's pretty entertaining. I'm crazy about lions though, and for some reason, tigers aren't scared off by the mane like I think every living thing should be, and they usually kick the lions' asses...quite disappointing
