Cockfighting in DR: J. Marichal and Pedro M.

Apparently someone posted a video on YouTube earlier today, which depicted Juan Marichal and Pedro Martinez cockfighting each other.  Well, to be exact, it was their roosters doing the fighting...to the death.

Obviously, YT (instructed by their corporate overlords--Google) yanked the video soon after it went up, but a few people got screenshots beforehand: http://homerderby.com/archives/1828

I don't see this as being nearly as bad as dogfighting, but I'm not sure why I think that way. Maybe because a rooster will never fetch me a beer from the fridge?

cock fighting
is brutal too.  but it won't get the outrage as dogfighting.

is it legal over there?

if so, then i don't see pedro getting in much trouble.

I expect to see all those posters...
...that condemned Michael Vick as a horrible human being to weigh in here.

i'm weighing in
i think what vick is is deplorable.

and i think cockfighting is as bad.

public sentiment is different.  dogs > chickens

and there aren't legal issues here.  cockfighting is legal in the DR.

do i think that makes it any better?  legally, yes.  morally?  no.

another difference
I don't think Pedro and Juan actually finance any of these games or have a hand in rearing these chickens.  I think they were just there as guest hosts.

yeah
the msnbc article i read basically described them as "throwing the first pitch" or something.

but it's still bad.

we can't use a "cultural differences" argument here to justify it.  that doesn't work for vick and shouldn't work for people in DR.

i think one of the things that
really made people mad and appalled was Vick's very direct hand in killing the dogs.

Fighting animals
to the death is a horrible act regardless of which animals are involved.

Exactly my point
I don't understand why the level of outrage in these 2 cases is so different.

Makes sense to me that those that were appalled by the Vick case should be equally horrified in this instance, but they don't appear to be reacting the same way.

but i told you the differences
if pedro was running a cockfighting ring and had 100 chickens cooped up that he occasionally killed by slamming them down on the pavement but otherwise tortured them to make them ruthless, then there would be the same level of outrage.

just being at a cockfight and showing that you don't think its a big deal is not going to garner outrage.

clinton portis basically said it wasn't a big deal and didn't get much of a response

That is a good point
And I will have to contemplate my opinion on the subject the next time I am chowing down on a chicken sandwich that came from a place where the chickens are treated as bad or worse than at a cockfight.

Vick
I'm pretty sure that a big part of his negative reputation comes from the stories that he tortured dogs to the death who lost.

If I heard that about Pedro I'd be pretty bothered by it also.

I used to condemn dog fighting
But then Hightowersmith explained to me that my devotion to man's bestest friend was a clear cut example of my inability to understand and cope with the complexity of human beings.

re:
Jerry: Kramer, cockfighting is illegal.
Kramer: Only in the United States.
Jerry: It's inhumane.
Kramer: Jerry, it's not what you think.
Jerry: It's two roosters pecking at each other!
Kramer: What? I thought they had gloves and helmets. You know, like American Gladiators
the truth.

Cockfighting and Dogfighting are ..

EQUALLY as disgusting and vile how could you not see that?

I dunno...
...I'm hardly liberal when it comes to animal rights.

My attitude is that hunting should be legal as long as

  1. it's done sustainably
  2. only to control the population
  3. and the meat is always eaten
If animals didn't want to be prey for us, they should have evolved.  Top of the food chain, bitches.  :)

What does cockfighting ..

have to do with hunting? Placing two innocent animals in a cage to brutalize each other to the death with metal swords on their claws has nothing to do with hunting. That's barbaric and solely done as a form of sick entertainment.

I was just making a more generalized statement
It is pretty barbaric, I would agree.  But so is restricting marriage to a man and a woman, but that's supported by at least 45% of this country...

Well .....

I have to agree with you on the marriage restrictions being barbaric.

let's put it this way
dogfighting - people keep these as pets, so it's thought of worse already

cockfighting - we kill them (in a lot of situations in VERY bad ways) and eat them

so right off the bat, it's like bullfighting to me...something I think could be understandable.  I think it's wrong, no doubt.  But you're simply not going to have the outcry as you would if it were cat fighting, with cats that weren't declawed, and were raised as predators, not house cats.  Just the same, you wouldn't have anywhere near as much outcry if there were somehow pig fighting matches

I want to watch a cat fight
between de-clawed, de-toothed cats. That'd be pretty damn funny.

with peanut butter in their mouths, and a
clothespin on their tails...it'd be classic.

You know what I enjoy?  Those "lion vs. tiger" videos they have - it's nature, so you don't feel wrong about watching it, and it's pretty entertaining.  I'm crazy about lions though, and for some reason, tigers aren't scared off by the mane like I think every living thing should be, and they usually kick the lions' asses...quite disappointing
