Erik Bedard trade is done (finally)

It is finally a done deal.

Erik Bedard has been traded to the Mariners for Adam Jones, George Sherrill, Chris Tillman, Tony Butler and Kam Mickolio.

I've said all I have to say about this deal in the days leading up to it.  I'm just glad it is finally over, one way or the other.

MLBTR's...
Tim Dierkes concludes his Bedard to the Mariners talk with this:
"Now that this is done, I wonder if the best course for the Mariners is to push all-in and upgrade further.  Maybe deplete the farm system like Kenny Williams did, in a full-blown attempt to win it all in 2008."

As a Ranger fan, I sure hope so!

push all in
they have a few prospects left but not that many...and it would be interesting to see what position they target if they do make a trade.  they're not really one play away, even now.

"Push all in"
Isn't that LBrooks' favorite hobby when he has his "friends" over, or should I say "under"?

Rangers Interest
I read where JonBoy was all over the Orioles about trading for Bedard according to TR Sullivan.

Geesh, with one of the greatest farm systems in the Majors how could we miss out?  lol

You are a dumb ass
You know the O's were looking for a CF and Jones was the one they were targeting.

I would love to see you try to be the Rangers GM for a year. Strike that you would fuck them up so much no of us would ever see a winning season again.

Go change your depends you just shit yourself.

LBrooks
Actually, don't even put on a new Depends. What's the point? You can't get any worse.

If LBrooks was the Rangers GM...
we would all feel the same way about the Rangers as he does now.

"If LBrooks was the Rangers GM...

If LBrooks was the Rangers GM, he would be feeling up all the Rangers the same way he feels himself up now.

What really sucks
Is the one area of our farm system that is the weakest is the one area that both the Os and Twins were needing. Theres nothing Daniels could have done to get these guys here.

I know its a long way away and I hate drafting for need rather than best player available, especially high in a draft, but I think this year we need to look into taking a top outfield prospect possibly colege level who could come in and make an impact in a couple years. But if we take another pitcher that is fine with me also.

by Steven on Feb 8, 2008 4:11 PM CST reply actions

That's what you would like to have done
How would you have gone about doing it?

What prospects would you have given up that would have gotten you those players? Or how much more would you have overpaid players to play in Texas as opposed to somewhere else?

Because if you can't answer those questions, then you're just a lazy, oafish slacker who should be confined to sports talk radio instead of a message board where people (generally) have a clue about what they're talking about.

So far, all you've said is "The way that I would have done it is the way that I would have done it".

Lame.

Will never give you a straight answer.

Probably because he's bent.
So if you're a guy, he will in fact give you it you straight in when he's in the mood and you're in a certain position.

Could have been worse for the M's
At different points Morrow, Triunfel and Clement were each tossed around here in addition to Jones. Tillman is the only other guy of consequence in the deal. Butler could be, but you could say that about all kinds of pitching prospects, and his profile went backwards in 2007.

So do you make this deal then Z...
2 years of Bedard for Jones (who could be a great CFer), Tillman and others? I just don't see it helping the Mariners get past the Halos this year and I think it really hurts them starting in '09.

No probably not
I was just excited over the prospect of them screwing themselves even worse.

Concur...
would have been very nice if they had to include Morrow as well.

One thing about this is...
It forces Marrow back to the 'pen. And unless they have a major injury or something, that's where he's gonna stay. This move may infact wind up impeding them developing Marrow as a starter.
I could use some baseball.

Finally, this trade is done...
It's about damn time. That pretty much locks up 2nd place for the Mariners this year... maybe even gives them a shot at the Angels if Kelvim Escobar is out for an extended period of time.

But now, when we're competing in 5 years, we won't have to worry about pitching to Adam Jones... I still say this wasn't that great a deal for the Mariners, from the standpoint of the future.

by LSJ on Feb 8, 2008 6:25 PM CST reply actions

2nd place
Maybe, maybe not.  They've added Bedard, but they losea good outfielder.  They've replace Guillen and Jones with Wilkerson and Bedard.  I still think they'll be lucky to win more than 80 games this year, that offense sucks.
A working class hero is something to be.

Best Case Scenario for the Mariners (improbable)
Their enigmas (Sexson, Lopez) bounce back and become average regulars.  Beltre and Ichiro have big years.  Brandon Morrow makes a successful transition to a 3-4 starter.  Aumont, although still very raw, potentially comes in and upgrades the bullpen if they're in the position to win the pennant? Clement comes in and plays a nice DH.

Even with this, there's little chance they catch the Angels even if they sign a corner outfielder like the still available Barry Bonds.
