Maybe ab03 should just introduce them to GreaseMonkey...

Well...
In a libertarian environment, enforcement is up to the users. The Troll Script gives everyone a perfect mechanism by which to enforce community norms. And, I don't want to speak for Adam, but I'd be willing to bet that if running this site entailed setting up a grievance committee and jumping through those types of hoops, he'd probably just disable comments.

Blez is a moron
I know that from the way he handled gearheads of war..
Anyways, I suppose that system is "better" than mods arbitrarily banning people, though.
by Sharky on Feb 9, 2008 2:21 AM CST reply actions 0 recs
anyways
However, the SBN network has some damn good banning. As I say, Gearheads apparently banned me by MAC ADDRESS (not IP) which I have never in all my life seen before. Even that I could circumvent easily enough, but I have never bothered, so I guess it worked.
The kind of banning that sucks though is if you have a longtime persona well known by the community though, (for example, sharky..). You can come back but you cant openly tip off who you are, so you have to stay on the down low, wehich sucks. Unless you just wanna be an ass, then you just spam the board at 2AM when nobody is watching.

That seems like overkill to me...
These forums where made for open discussion. It's true, that discussion should be kept as clean as possible, but having a complicated system like that... that just seems a little bit like overkill to me. Are the A's fans really that bad, they can't occasionally agree to disagree with each other?
by lonestarJon on Feb 9, 2008 2:45 AM CST reply actions 0 recs
ab03's solution is much better.
The kind of big government namby pamby A's solution seems like something that would come up from a joint Republican-Democrat Blue Ribbon Committee.

Yes but
Does that mean LSB needs a subcommittee? No, but words can often do far more harm than sticks and stones.

Th e Above
Personally, though, there's nobody I can't ignore if I want to. When I'm in the mood, I'll spar with people like Sharky. When I'm not, my brain has a pretty good "ignore" feature. So unless things really, really deteriorated around here I don't think I'd ever install that script.

I'll respond
"OT: weird recruiting day story
of a lie gone terribly wrong
made me think of someone on this board"
Gosh, you know it's so subtle, but I think that's a callback to the past. Perhaps you shouldn't cast the first stone on this subject, especially since you have absolutely nothing to back it up with.
Bottom line: you're a moron, you contribute nothing, and you're a pussy on top of that. Why haven't you added me to your little pussy list yet? I certainly don't want my golden comments wasted on a buffoon like yourself.
The ironic thing is that you pump your chest for making a troll script and then you troll around other threads looking for ways to jab at me. Ironic, but ultimately pathetic.

funny
i don't know if you remember, but you used to like me. but you really do lash out at anybody and everybody who looks at you the wrong way. i admit, i baited you (though a couple people have been caught in lies recently), but only because it's so fun and really does prove the point even if you don't get what the point is.
by ab03 on Feb 9, 2008 8:54 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Actually
In other news, you continue to prove the point that you can't prove points. Let me see if I get this: you purposely bait others for your own enjoyment and yet you dislike "trolls". Hmm.
You don't really provide much of a challenge.

well thank you Brett!
I tell you what since I think you're about the coolest thing since sliced bread I hereby extend an olive branch to Mr. Irwin in good faith. Not only are you the coolest but I WANT your name. I wish my name was Brett Gardner.
I know noone on here wants to listen to Chase and I go at each other all season long so I do apologize for any past nastiness that I have leveled at him and I'm willing to let bygones be bygones. We're all here to discuss and enjoy our Rangers and I can't wait for the season to start.
So thank you Brett - you are the best!

Calm down Brett...
I agree with you that no one needs to be added to a "troll" list. You can just skim over their posts. However if someone else wants to do it then no big deal, that's their opinion. A lot of people will probably use ab03's idea, so what?
Again I'm not trying to pick a fight with you (we have gone down that road before). Just try and ease up on the "my golden comments" posts and view of yourself here. I don't view you as any better or worse than most here, but I think others feel that you think higher of yourself than many others here. I hope that isn't true but if it is that is your opinion as well. I realize you don't care what others think of you, including me and this post, but it will keep you from "fueling the fire" in the future if you ease up a little. Just my opinion.
by slc ranger on Feb 9, 2008 8:59 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Fair enough
In light of your reasoned response, I apologize to ab03 if my comments went too far, and I will try to refrain from name-calling in the future.

Meh
Anyone and everyone is invited to call me anything, anytime they wish. It will merely make me giggle like a teen-aged school girl.

FWIW, Ben, I should have added your name to the post below as well. I think you do fine work.

Thanks...
I don't think anyone should have to take name-calling from anyone just because they want to talk baseball. Last year I said something to someone that I regretted, for various reasons, and thought they weren't going to be around here anymore. I emailed them privately and apologized. There's shtick and there's being a legitimate asshole. Let's stick to shtick.
by benmor78 on Feb 10, 2008 10:05 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
very well put
Hopefully once the season gets rolling we get back on track with more baseball related discussions and less political discussions and stupid internet fighting.
by rentz on Feb 10, 2008 10:08 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Let me try to put this another way
While I do not choose to attack with name calling and profanity, I don't have a problem with people doing that if that's how they wish to debate and express their thoughts and ideas.
I think it's ridiculous that people get so bent out of shape when someone they don't even remotely know calls them a name. Some people are so concerned about being "disprected" that they lose sight of the task at hand, which is spirited debate about baseball and sometimes other OT subjects. And when that happens, the victim usually loses.

They do have quite a few more registered users...
I know about a dozen A's fans here in the bay area and ALL of them are, at the very least, lurkers at A's Nation. I guess I sorta am too, except I'm not a registered user.
And apparently they had a big dustup last week about...you guessed it...politics. Specifically there was an Obama ad running there for a few weeks (he did very well in San Francisco and Oakland, including the surrounding communities). And then users started posting diaries about their candidates. (This is from a friend who frequents A's Nation, by the way, so it's second-hand) Blez went in and just disabled all the diaries because he was sick of the site not being 100% about baseball/A's.
I don't see how a policy like that could fly here. And is probably a big part of the reason Adam took a more subdued approach to this election season. The more page views he gets, the better for him and for the standard popularity/traffic metrics of the site. We would have less people here blogging about baseball than we have now if he were to cut off all non-baseball talk. Blez can kind of push that envelope a little more, considering his traffic and devotees. Same goes for McCovey Chronicles, but I'm not real sure what their political discourse/community governance restrictions are like.
