Its not tough...
to see why reds fans were calling him Roy Hobbs.  Definately the highlight of spring training and I have a feeling he's the guy that will keep me watching in those games we are getting killed in.  I remember when I was a kid, and we are down 4 or 5 runs, thinking Gonzo/Palmeiro could get us back in the game.

I'm thinking he's gonna be THAT guy.

was at the game today
got his autograph before the game and talked to him for a few seconds...he couldn't believe that people actually knew who he was.  seemed like a very classy guy.  then he leads off the second with an absolute laser over the left centerfield fence.  the fence is about 10 feet and the ball could not have gotten over 25 feet off the ground at any point.  he also had two laser line drives to right field and stole a base in which the catcher had no shot.  he got picked off after his third hit, but oh well

also
sat right behind wilmer font and a few other latin prospects...font is huge and looks about 10 years older than he really is

He good
[i]damned[i] good

I support trading your best young pitcher for a former #1 overall who is a truly singular talent...and this guy is obviously that.

Eddy V has a shitload of talent, but this guy pretty obviously has even more.

Trading your best young pitcher for a former 17th rounder who had a couple of good years in the minors?    Not so much.

See
i seriously don't know who he's talking about though, Masset or Danks.

I doubt if anyone would consider Masset

our best young pitcher at the time.

No this is not a 12 step program meeting, it's your Rangers clubhouse!

I beg to differ
A guy with 44 plus pitches HAS to be the team's best young pitcher right?

by Chris Martin on Mar 11, 2008 9:30 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I thought it was 45?

But don't they have to go over the plate?

Volquez was
hardly our best young pitcher.  sure he has upside, but I don't think volquez would ever be a #1 starter. He's not that great.  I'm glad he started to figure things out though.

As far as hammy, I am really excited to see him play all year.  This kid can be one of the most popular rangers players in history because we've been waiting for someone of his caliber since we have traded away all our great players-with the exception of Young of course.

Wait 'til the year after next

HUH??
"a former 17th rounder who had a couple of good years in the minors"

What's wrong with those? You must hate Ian Kinsler then.

yeah
McCarthy is on par with Kinsler and Harden...

good one

Well
It was your idea to argue the merits based on draft position.  Don't be mad that it failed on you.

McCarthy
From the Baseball America Top 100 list, 2005:
  1. Brandon McCarthy
  2. Ian Kinsler
So yeah, McCarthy was on par with Kinsler.

at the game also
Missed the first inning. Glad it was 3 up 3 down for the home team so I could see that shot to left. It's one game but I came away very impressed. Wish I could have seen him play some d.

Talked to Julio Borbon for a minute. He says he's going to high a. Nice guy. Shorter than I expected.

just my opinion on the tats
has nothing to do with Hamilton as a player.

Hamilton is going to really be a huge offensive impact for this team if he stays healthy. I'm excited that we have him.

by hurlerhurley on Mar 11, 2008 11:39 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Then why did you bring them up?
Hamilton's body art is a non-issue. I'm not a huge fan of all-out body ink like that myself - but who cares, just so long as he stays healthy and does what he does?

It's amazing how popular
a legitimate defensive CF who hits like a corner OF can be.  Especially when traded for a back of the rotation guy.

volquez
yea it was a hell of a deal

that said, EV could def be a #2...

dont the reds make some questionable moves...trading austin kearns in this deal
July 13, 2006: Traded by the Cincinnati Reds with Felipe Lopez and Ryan Wagner to the Washington Nationals for Gary Majewski, Royce Clayton, Bill Bray, Brendan Harris, and Daryl Thompson

kearns btw has career 111 ops+ and turns 28 this year...sleeper

remind me how that deal worked out? lopez/kearns SHOULD be starting (christian guzman...REALLY?)

Volquez
His line so far this spring for the Reds:

3 G, 1-0, 5.63 ERA, 8.0 IP, 12 H, 5 ER, 2 BB 13 K

The thing that stands out at me is the 2 BB to 13 K. Definite improvement in that department, it seems.

But then you have Hamilton's spring line:

9 G, 23 AB, 5 R, 12 H, 2 2B's, 2 3B's, 2 HR, 11 RBI, .542 OBP, 1.403 SLG%, .522 AVG

Um, waiter? I'll have the Ham, thank you please...

Surely you wouldnt
base any decision on a few spring training games?

EV
will look like a 2 on his good days.  He'll probably have a mix of good and bad days though.  I'd be very surprised if he was a consistent front of the rotation guy tho.

If they are both healthy......
this will be a steal......along the lines of Frank Robinson for Milt Pappas.....Jeff Bagwell for Larry Anderson.....Derek Lowe and Jason Varitek for Heathcliff Slocumb.....

Hamilton is a HOF talent....he nearly pissed it away, but it looks like he may make up for lost time....I know it's only ST but, DAMN!!!
