Yahoo article on Jon Daniels and Matt West
I think Jon Daniels really came off looking bad here.
It's easy to play hardball with an 18 year old kid... who more than likely is full of shit here.
But don't act like Senator Mitchell himself when you pursued Barry Bonds last offseason and ended up signing Sammy Sosa.
You're against steroid use... unless it will sell some tickets or make news.
This kid made a mistake, and the team is ready to throw him under the bus to make the GM look like a hardass.
I'm usually generally supportive about Daniels, but then again, I don't care about steroids in sports, I don't believe sports has some rampant morality that puts them above any other business. In business, most people will do whatever it takes to get a leg up. In sports, people will do the same thing. Baseball teams will steal signals, football teams will tape other football teams and jam communication signals, and players of all sports will put whatever in their bodies if it makes them a fraction stronger, faster, or better.

So I was wondering
"I was disappointed that we had not necessarily seen an accurate portrayal."
What was he supposed to say?
You wouldn't be pissed and feel burned if you wasted such a high pick on this guy?

The problem with steroids and drafting kids
Odds are Matt West would still have been a 3rd or 4th round pick, maybe still a 2nd rounder, without the 'roids. But you have no idea, and there is a good chance that the Rangers wasted a 2nd round pick as well as $400,000 on someone who was only good because of whatever illegal supplement he was taking. Whether you agree with the rules or not, he's not able to use those supplements in the pros, and so his value is lower than it was portreyed.
It is deception on the part of the draftee. And the Rangers have every right to be upset and annoyed.

JD looked bad
Sure he's mad, and sure he may have wasted a pick.
So take care of it internally, like you should have been doing all along. To now say that MLB should be testing all of the draftees sounds like a lame excuse for his own staff's screw-ups.
