Tiger
Love watching him, but I had Bart Bryant as one of my fantasy golfers this week (along with Tiger but you can just cancel him out since the rest of America did too) and was sure pulling for him to pull this one out.

I guess if you cancel Tiger out, Bart would still finish first, huh?

I was just home on spring break...
played both weekends, and took 10 strokes off my score.

This last weekend, I finally sucked it up and hit a driver.  I would typically just use low loft hybrids to tee off.

I demoed a TaylorMade Burner Draw Driver for the round, and I was pretty satisfied with how I hit it.

Nice!  I just shifted from a 7.5 loft Titleist 975J to (only diehards will catch this) an 8.5 Taylormade RX-03.  How to rediscover distance in a single act.

haha... nothing to brag about...
I went from a 118 to a 108.  But I don't get to play nearly as much as I would like.

Like I implied before, before I would hate to hit the driver... I started golfing by just using irons, and never got out of the habit.  So when I started using the driver this last weekend, my dad and family friend were giving me some leeway with some mulligans, etc.  But when I would hit the driver (10.5 loft) right, it was beautiful, and went about 240-250 yards.

I'm going to demo a 9 or 9.5 next time.  Getting the ball in the air wasn't really a problem with the 10.5.

I fell more in love with my R7 Draw Rescue (22*) out of the fairway though... I was hitting that dead on 175-190 yards.

another million bucks says
half the golfers on the tour both run and throw like 11 year-old girls.

So what does that prove?

(And I'd refute you on both Wells and Colon. They're fat, yes, and certainly you'll never find a picture of one of them in Webster's next to the word "Athlete", but it does take some athleticism to repeat a delivery time and time again like they do.)

I believe golf is hard. It's very, very hard. It takes a lot of skill and a ton of discipline. But you're not directly competing against anyone. So in my book, it's not a sport. It's an activity. Just like bowling, ice skating, gymnastics, diving, etc...

Don't worry, I definitely didn't take that as an attack. You have a different viewpoint than I do, and that's fine.

I've played just enough golf to know that it's very difficult, that I find playing it very boring (I'm an action oriented guy), and that I'm way too easily frustrated to ever play it seriously... or for fun.

I couldn't care less what the dictionary says, though. I realize that golf is generally accepted to be a sport. It's all over sportscenter, and when I search for sports on my tv menu, golf is listed.

It's just not a sport as I define it. (Much like darts, bowling and the judging "sports" aren't sports to me.)

It's okay for reasonable minds to disagree;)

Golf is a weekend hobby
That was made into a sport by advertising and sponsoership.

Actual sports involve uniforms, teams, and strategy. There's no strategy in golf, you just it the ball as close to the cup as you can.

You can refine golf, like you can anything, with all the sand wedges, 9 irons and super-polymer head drivers you want, but at the end of the day, it's still just a glorified hobby.

Sorry, but chess is more of a sport than golf.

by LSJ on Mar 16, 2008 8:46 PM CDT up reply actions

no strategy
you have never golfed have you.

and i like how you have to have uniforms.  so i guess there is no such thing as an individual sport.

Even the most intellectual of golfers, figuring out what club to hit with what sublety or force, still have to physically execute the shot.  Chances of executing what you visualize perfectly are about 1 in 5,000 (unless you are Tiger).  Chess is more like bowling.  Once you figure it out, the move itself is a repetitive thing.

I'll be glad to host you to an educational round when you come up here for a game.  The one thing I might point out about golf, you can play your entire life and you will never have a shot to make totally identical to any other shot you've already hit.  Infinite variety, strategy yes, execution yes, and you don't have a contact sport opponent, you have a stack of opponents.  Every other player out there, the course itself, the weather, how you feel, who you are paired with, and course conditions.

Don't you hate it
when you pick a side of an issue, then someone comes along who takes the same side as you and proceeds to completely embarrass everyone on your side of the issue with their ridiculous logic?

Sheesh.

Uniforms, Jon?

Our side can do better than that.

Tennis is very much a sport, for instance.

We true soldiers. We don't die. We keep rolling. Nah, nah, nah, nah, nah...

by thedirkatron on Mar 16, 2008 10:52 PM CDT up reply actions

I guess I never should have tossed my hat into
This ring anyway... I did a pretty terrible job of illustrating my point - sometimes the words just don't form themselves on the screen (this is a lame excuse, but I have a bad head cold right now, for what it's worth).

What I was trying to say with the uniforms reference is, in golf, you're not a part of anything. Baseball, football, soccer even... you put on the uniform, and you're part of a team. You're part of something greater than yourself, and winning relies not only on your personal abilty, but of those around you, and your ability to interact with them.

That's even true in racing, as a driver must be able to tell his pit crew what adjustments to make to maximise the performance of the car.

"True sports" to me are something you do as a team - hobbies are something you do by yourself, to stay active and fit. I know that's a huge generalization, and there are some exceptions to that rule, but that's just my opinion.

And I still fail to see how deciding what type of club to use qualifies as "strategy". Golf is a reactionary game - you make a shot, and you adapt to the environment your latest shot created. But you can't really plan an entire round of golf. You can play one, but you can't plan one.

I'm sorry for "embarrasing" your side of the arguement - my fault, for failing to compose a coherent comment. Hopefully this one made more sense.

I shall now bow out of the discussion in disgrace...

by LSJ on Mar 16, 2008 11:49 PM CDT up reply actions

Once again
Once again you're basically defining sports as only team sports, with your silly use of uniforms. By doing this you eliminate the most basic sports of all time, things like track and field, swimming, etc. It's a silly argument.

As far as planning a round, you are simply speaking out of ignorance. Professional golfers play pratice rounds, and walk the course with their caddies before a tournament. Here they plot out safe landing areas for drives, angles to set up for depending on hole position, etc.

There is a HELL of a lot of planning that goes into each and every round of a tournament for a professional golfer.

If you fail to see how selecting a club is strategy then I question how much you know about even the basics of golf.

To be fair, I'm not sure that golf realy is a sport either. Saying it requires physical execution of the strategy is true, but the same can be said of bowling. And bowling sure as hell isn't a sport. So I don't know what the answer it.

But your argument continues to be ridiculous.

by jthig32 on Mar 17, 2008 12:03 AM CDT up reply actions

Skill vs Sport
I once saw Chi Chi Rodriguez tee up two golf balls and pull out a 3-wood.  He hit one normal, a big slice.  He ran around to the other side and hit the second ball with the back of the club, big left-handed slice.  The two balls hit in the air.

That was skill.

Golf is a sport.

And Tiger Woods is the most dominating athlete currently playing their respective sport (besides of course, Jason Kidd, Miles).

by corbsclinton on Mar 16, 2008 9:08 PM CDT reply actions

golfer/pitcher
just think about golf compared to pitching.

both are about perfecting a repetitive athletic motion with strength and control with variations (various pitches, types of shots).

the pitching motion is more stressful to the body that makes it more demanding, but at least in concept there are some similarities to me.

that said ive never even played a round of golf so I have no clue =p  but i certainly consider it a sport.

by DShep on Mar 16, 2008 9:16 PM CDT reply actions

You need to drop the idea of
"sports" only  being a physical competition between two or more individuals.

In golf the mental game against yourself is probably harder to handle than any physical confrontation basketball, football, or baseball can create

by SaltyGoesYard on Mar 16, 2008 9:35 PM CDT reply actions

So is bowling a sport?
How about figure skating? Gymnastics? How about darts? (I saw a pro darts tournament on ESPN2 once... those guys are incredible. Like, WOW.)

And I don't why'd you choose to compare "the mental game against yourself" in golf to the physical confrontations in "sport" sports. How is that relevant? Apples and oranges.

I think the mental game against yourself in pitching a baseball late in a close game, or standing tall in the pocket to deliver a pass while a linebacker bears down on you, or rising up for a jump shot with time winding down and your team down by one point would be just as tough as the mental game against yourself in golf.

But that's not the point.

The mental game against yourself while endeavoring to stand completely and totally motionless for 35 straight hours is probably harder than the mental game against yourself in golf, but that doesn't mean that standing completely and totally motionless for 35 hours is a sport.

Respectfully
Gymnastics is pretty demanding.  First, you compete against a judges' view of perfection and get marked down from that.  Then, physical skill and conditioning are extreme.  My daughter did well, and especially on uneven bars.  When you are rotating around a bar at full tilt, you approach 45 mph.  Try supporting your body holding on only with the end third of your fingers at that speed, then launch upward into a back one and a half somersault with a full twist, catch the upper bar without a pause in your rotational meter.  It's like .. no, it's harder than ... jumping over a car, for instance.

I agree
In fact it's VERY demanding. The stuff those people do is nuts. (NUTS!) It's crazy hard. Every time I watch the Olympics I find myself in awe of what those gymnasts are able to do.

But I don't consider it a sport any more than I do car jumping. Both are, imo, very very difficult activities.

In gymnastics you're not competing against anyone. You do your activity, and then you're graded on how well you did it. It's anything but easy, but it's not a sport.
