glowing report on Holland
a lefty with low to mid nineties velocity and a couple of secondary pitches. One to watch.
Hambone, Hambone where you been? I been around these bases, and I'm going again.

Are there other places to follow the game?
I'm at work so I can't do audio or anything like that, and gameday still says "warmup."

For the second year in a row, the Academy gets it right. That means next year is going to be UGLY.

Newberg reporting..
..Jennings throwing 86-89.. that's a good sign.  With Padilla feeling better, and Jennings velocity coming back, I feel better that we have a chance to get through April around .500.

BTW-- Has anyone looked at the April schedule?  Frick'n brutal.

5 v LAA
4 v BOS
3 v DET

by mattrpav on Mar 17, 2008 4:00 PM CDT reply actions

not really
Laaaaa is without Lackey and Escobar and Red Sox could be without Beckett. I would say its a tough schedule but not brutal.

Hope
the Rangers face Dontrelle Willis.

He's going to get so exposed in the AL...

You have
some sort of basis for that opinion or are you just talking out your ass?

Willis
He put up a 5.17 era last year against a weaker league while allowing RHB to put up a .913 OPS against him.

I think he is going to struggle.

by jparks77 on Mar 17, 2008 4:28 PM CDT up reply actions

He has
a career 2.85 era in inter-league play and while he had issues last year against rhb his career opponent  ops from the right is .772. While I'm sure he would like that number to be lower I don't think that's struggling territory.

Struggling territory
It is when you now have to face a DH instead of a pitcher.

We will
go .500 through that schedule.

Good point...
..regarding the injured pitchers.. could be our saving grace.  If we can get through April at .500, and kill it in May (super weak schedule).  We'd have a chance to make things interesting for JD at the trade deadline.

by mattrpav on Mar 17, 2008 4:12 PM CDT up reply actions

Interesting?
What would you like JD to do at the trade deadline if this club, as constructed, is contending? Would you trade away some of our prospects for a player who will be a free agent in a couple months? I wouldn't. If we are competitive this year it only bodes well for the future.

Dickey
IS he still throwing the knuckleball? I was always a little sad to see him struggle and get let go since he seemed to bleed Ranger blue.

by Inkara1 on Mar 17, 2008 4:47 PM CDT up reply actions

botts struck out on one
but i think he doesnt use it all the time, just mixes it in now.  i wasnt paying real close attention though.

by DShep on Mar 17, 2008 4:51 PM CDT up reply actions

Newberg
sounds very confident that Botts and Cruz would not get through waivers.

Also
stating that Feldman may be tried as a starter.  Let's see... he can't get out of one inning without giving up 4 runs, let's spread that over 5 innings.
"But the major difference is where Showalter tried to overthink everything Washington at times seems like he isn't thinking at all. " - rentz

by hillcrest on Mar 17, 2008 4:45 PM CDT up reply actions

Well, another thing about that
Is Feldman has not started a game since he was with the AZL Rangers in 2004.

Combine that with the fact that he's a horrible pitcher, and you've got one doomed experiment.

Just for fun, here's something wierd: It's Feldman! From accross the hall!

by slc ranger on Mar 17, 2008 6:06 PM CDT up reply actions

Yes
It means we're not performing well against our division rivals. Spring training or no, those are still the same guys we'll have to contend with the most during the regular season - not performing well against them now (even when their lineups and pitching staffs are watered down with minor-leaguers) is not a good sign.
