"I can't find a Rangers Hamilton jersey anywhere. I know you have connections. Can you get me one? Do you accept checks or money orders?"

What a waste of a question...

"Signing any veteran Major League player with past success to a Minor League deal is a good idea."

No and... No

Meh
I learned a long time ago not to expect anything profound out of the mailbag.

There's dumbass questions in every single one, and today actually was pretty good, not counting the moron who thinks Saltalamacchia is "expendable" - but that's not exactly a moronic idea exclusive to the mailbag, so I digress.

What I hate is when TR's awnsers are worse than the questions - and he did okay this time around. All in all, I'd have to say this was a pretty decent mailbag, as far as mailbags go.

minor league deals
What's wrong with signing someone to a minor league deal?  The team needs some replacement bodies around when injuries inevitably happen.  And if it's a minor league deal they're not taking up a roster spot until it's necessary.
A working class hero is something to be.

"no and....No"
I would say no to signing vetern positional players to minor league deals (ie - alfonzo, sosa, etc.), but I'm all for a vetern pitcher...I don't think there is any harm in having a vetern pitcher around to teach the young arms, or provide insurance...especially with the way we tend to go through starters here in Texas...

He worded
it that you take a chance on any pitcher who has ever had sucess, which is false.

Why don't we go sign Chan Ho then.

Or Ishmael Valdez...

Whatever happened to him?

Yeah
Ponson was a bad signing, because he hasn't had success since 2003. In fact, he's been so incredibly bad since then, I think it's safe to say he's one of the worst pitchers in baseball over the last 4 years.

Ponson may have been cheap, but he was far from a low-risk/high reward signing - he's a high risk/low reward signing. In no way is he more qualified to pitch than Luis Mendoza, AJ Murray, or Robinson Tejeda - and yet here he is getting consideration to pitch instead of them.

He also
reminds me of Larry the Cable guy which freaks me out.

I hope he is gone soon, but I am sure he will get his many chances to stick with this team throughout the entire season.

bad signing
How can you say that? Is he taking up a roster spot from a young player? Did signing him cause us to lose a young player to waivers? How does a MINOR LEAGUE DEAL hurt us? Seriously. Last year Eric Gagne was coming off two years of injuries that sat him out. We gave him 6 million dollars and a roster spot. That is much more risky than a guy to a minor league deal.

Worst case scenario with Ponson is he never makes the major league team and elects to be released May 1 and we lose nothing.

Best case is he gets somewhat close to his previous self and provides a decent 5th starter for awhile until we can flip him for any kind of prospect at all.

I seriously don't understand all the uproar over this or any minor league deal.

That's just it
He's worthless. Nobody will give up anything of value for him on the trade market - and if he does make the the team, it's far more likely he'll suck period.

The uproar is that somebody that is as worthless as him even has a chance to make the roster. Putting him on the team would be like putting Edgardo Alfonzo on the team. He is that worthless, both as a pitcher, and as a trade chip.

No harm...
in signing veteran infielders either. Most teams keep a veteran around as a utility infielder.

But I don't
see much potential in Ponson, I would rather just bank on our young, see what we have in the bag.

But if I had say in anything, I would have CJ in the rotation faster than Ruddy Yan...

I agree
CJ should be in the rotation and Ponson the closer:)

Nick Masset
6 runs in 3 IP - ouch, that hurt.  Out of options and possibly out of a bullpen job.

Masset is out of options?
Quick! Pick him back up, so people can bitch a little less about the Danks trade.

wanna bet CWS
keep him?

Did you see Philip Hughes flopped again. This time he gave up 7 runs (6 ER) in 4 IP

John Danks nevermind
