Miguel Cabrera to sign huge contract extension
ESPN is reporting that the Tigers and Miguel Cabrera have agreed to a contract extension worth $153.3 million over 8 years.
The story says that Cabrera will get $11.3 million in 2008, and $19 million per year thereafter, but the numbers don't really work out that way, so we'll have to see once we get a clarification.
However...this is a very good deal for the Tigers, who get one of the best hitters in baseball through his age 32 season for what is, all in all, a pretty reasonable amount. The length isn't such a big issue, given Cabrera's age, and $19 million per year for an elite hitter is probably below market rate right now.
If the Rangers could have gotten Cabrera for $22-23 million per year over 8 years, I'd have been ecstatic.
Great deal for Detroit, if true.

For their
sake, hope he keeps in shape rather than what pace he is on now.
But he is a elite player, great deal for them.
On the subject of elite hitters, what is the Manny deal going to look like next year?
How many years will it take to sign him?

Agreed
Cabrera is an absolute stud. By the time his contract runs its course, elite players will likely be getting 30 million.

Ive
been a fan of him since 03 playoff heroics, I guess he just got lost in that crappy Florida team.
I have actually defended him on this site before, he is a great talent at such a young age.
I will always be a fan of him, he did beat those dreaded Yankees in a world series. :)

actually
i might be confused. did you not make predictions about him getting fat? I tried looking through past posts but I can't find any. if you didn't, then I apologize.

I might
have been kidding around or something, but I don't wish that on him.
Being on that Florida team would be pretty depressing, no light at the end of the tunnel.
I wish him the best of luck, just not against the Rangers

I doubt they'll land 30 million
After all that was Hicks reasoning for A-Rod's large contract back in 2000. He figured in 5 years A-Rod's salary was going to be a bargain compared to other deals.
In hindsight he was correct, only it was a bargain for the Yanks

Wow,
surprised they got this done so quickly and at such a relatively team friendly price.

If we could have gotten that contract
Then I would have been fine with giving up a ton to get him.

I Almost...
don't believe this is being accurately reported. The numbers are SO far off what had been discussed in the media this spring. Why would Miggy give a hometown discount BEFORE even playing a game in Detroit and just a year before free agency? This just doesn't make sense, although I congratulate the Tigers I guess.

He's a fatty whose "most similar by age comps" are:
21: Hank Aaron
22: Hank Aaron
23: Hank Aaron
24: Hank Aaron

Babe Ruth's most similar by age
23: Will Clark
24: Mike Greenwell
25: Chuck Clein
26-33: Ted Williams
34: Willie Mays
35-37: Jimmie Foxx
And here's the kicker: ages 38 though 40:

that's nice
he's still a fatty like Carlos Lee.
the truth.

He's a ton better than Carlos Lee
And if he can hit like that, who gives a crap how fat he is?
See also: David Ortiz, Manny Ramirez, Babe Ruth...

chill dood
all i said is that he was fat. Fat like Lee. I didn't say he played like Lee. I'm just joking man, you know, like AJM does about fatty Bart Colon.
the truth.
by Longhorn on Mar 22, 2008 11:25 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, sorry
But there are people who'll make his weight an issue. Not that I'm a Miggy Cabrera fan, but when you're as good as he is, you can be as fat as you want, just so long as it doesn't affect your swing!
I do think he should make an effort to get in shape and play better defense, though - although according to AJM above, he has.

As an actual fatty
I'm offended. Fat people don't get much in life. At least let us have our fatness, and don't falsely bestow it upon world-class athletes.

not THAT bad
but definitely a meh update.
its like that for every team now by the way.
anyway it will look better when the countdown clock is taken away and the videoplayer moves into that spot and things actually line up. unless there are ads that im blocking that make it line up now.
by DSheppard on Mar 23, 2008 12:40 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
The countdown clock is defintely in the wrong place
I'm personally questioning if the web developers are done with that or not.
There's so many problems with the way things line up, so many things are in wierd places, I don't even now where to begin telling you about them.
