Around SBN: The Week In Worst: When Baseball Goes Wrong

Easter morning things

Opening Day is looming, and with the last week of spring training coming up, things are starting to take shape.

Ron Washington says he anticipates Robinson Tejeda sticking in the bullpen, at least at the start of the season.

Jeff Wilson writes about the Rangers trio of injured late-inning relievers -- C.J. Wilson, Joaquin Benoit, and Eddie Guardado -- making progress and saying they'll be ready to go Opening Day.

Brandon McCarthy thinks he'll be pitching again in early May.

Jason Jennings went 5 shutout innings in a minor league game yesterday.

I mentioned earlier that the Tigers are needing relief help, and could be a match with the Rangers, who have extra relievers.  T.R. Sullivan says the Tigers are scouting the Rangers "hard" right now, and that the Reds are interested in Gerald Laird, but there isn't a match at this point.

Sullivan also says that Ron Washington is intrigued by Jason Ellison in the last bench spot, since he could provide speed off the bench.  Personally, I don't see speed off the bench as that big of a need, particularly when you look at the current Ranger lineup...who on this team really would need to be pinch run for in a late-game situation?  Ben Broussard?  Maybe Frank Catalanotto?  That's about it...

Jason Jennings

Without looking at his spring numbers, it seems as if he has had a pleasant spring. Seems as though everytime I read an update on him here it is something good. We may have a decent top three this year.

i didn't even see the jason ellison comment

my god, how pissed off would people be about that?

if wash is managing in 10 years, miles has hope that when ruddy yan comes back to the club as a grizzled AAA veteran, wash will find a place for him

Same Issue

JD may be the right guy to build a winner, but for the life of me I'm not seeing how Wash is the guy to put a winner on the field. He gets kudos for stressing defensive improvement, but that's coaching, not managing.

Reverse

the names "JD" and "Wash", and I agree.

What "Plan" are we on now?

I have had similar thoughts myself.

He might be good with youger players but have trouble with some veterns. I can see Wash taking the Rangers into the playoffs, maybe even into the ALCS. But to win it all, I am not sure.

Ellison

He's also been caught about a third of the time he's tried to steal, in both the majors and minors.

Botts isn't a burner, but he once won the team's 60-yard dash competition, and as anyone who's seen him play in the minors knows, he runs very well- and not just for someone his size.

Ron Washington

He just doesn't get it. If it were up to him I shudder to imagine what this roster would look like but I bet Ponson would be in the rotation, Mench would be in the OF and Matt Kata would be the first utility guy.

The best interpretation I could take away from that comment

is that Botts and Cruz are about to be traded and Wash is deciding between Ellison and Mench.

It's more likely that Villanova will take the tourney than that interpretation is anywhere near accurate.

Granderson's out with a broken hand

Should I suggest to T.R.'s mailbag that we package German and Boggs in a trade for Verlander?

Sounds good

Hopefully someone hasn't beaten you to it.

That's too much talent

Someone will suggest sending Byrd for Verlander straight up.

Today's

Lineup . Young hitting 2nd which I think most of us like. I think Wash finally realized who the best hitter on this team is. although I would switch Blalock and Bradley when Bradley starts getting his groove back.

Hamilton-Blalock

would just be asking for lefty relievers late in every single game.

although we can hope hamilton can adjust to lefties, as its too early to say he just cant hit lefties after a hundred at bats or whatever. but at least for now.. yeah.

Wash...*sigh*

I love how he has coached the players to become better overall, especially defensively. But damn, he just sucks when it comes to roster management. Ellison?!?! Are you kidding me?!?! Yeah, lets get that great speed for the last bench spot. He's gone an astounding 22-33 at the Major League level and 112-175 in the minors. Please JD, please never listen to him when you are trying to make a roster decision.

I wonder

how much Wash is really "pondering" Ellison. You know, he can't seriously think he deserves a roster spot, so I wonder what he said that would compel TR to make a mention of it in the blog.

by TexasTiger on Mar 23, 2008 2:16 PM CDT up reply actions

Well, I'd be willing to hear you out, except that

Wash is a straight shooter. Whatever is in his brain, comes straight out of his mouth. That's part of what the Rangers found so refreshing about him.

So, he's really pondering it.

However, he also pondered batting Hamilton second. There is still time for him to reevaluate that Ellison thought. Hopefully, though, the thought of keeping Ellison left not only his mouth but also his brain the moment he spoke it.

Doesn't this sort of behavior just seem to put more pressure on JD? He could give Wash 9 All Stars, and I would still worry a bit that the next Kata-Ellison would be at the forefront of Wash's mind.

Pressure on JD

Don't know how much pressure it puts on him, but given some of last season's roster moves, I think JD trusts his manager to make smart decisions on who he needs and regretfully has given him a chance to prove that he was right. Luckily for us, I don't think JD is listening to much to Wash this time around on roster decisions.
