OT: Dirk Goes Down
Almost like a mercy killing for this season. In some ways, this is more palatable than another 7 game series playoff loss

avery sucks
where is kidd?
how does a team like dallas give up a 19-0 run.
This is the Atlanta Hawks
the truth.
Left leg pretty much buckled after he made a block.
Could be a knee or an ankle. Don't think they have a timetable yet.
initial report
Dirk Nowitzki had what is being termed a left leg and ankle injury and had X-rays at the arena.
The diagnosis is uncertain at this point, but it seems obvious that he won't be back in today's game. He could not put any pressure on the leg at first, but was walking gingerly on it after the X-rays.
So
I've been gone for a couple of weeks. Has the entirety of the crowd questioning the trade grown beyond Adam and me or are people in denial?
I was pretty sure
The bulk of the criticism was because of the future, not the 1v1 analysis of Harris vs. Kidd.

i really don't think
harris would have made a difference in these games. i'm still fine with the trade, especially seeing what harris and diop have done in NJ
the difference
I think the big difference between having Kidd versus having Harris when you don't have Dirk is that Harris can create shots for himself. Kidd can't. Kidd is twice the point guard Harris is when it comes to creating opportunities for others on the floor, but he's definitely not as good as Harris when it comes to creating his own shots.
All in all, I would rather have Harris out there slashing and shooting rather than Kidd laying bricks. I was on the fence about the trade because I could see both the good and the bad in it. Without the MVP to create for, I think it's going to end up looking a lot worse.
But I'd also rather have Travis Hafner at 1B or DH than Ben Broussard and Milton Bradley, right?

the trade
i'm beginning to see a lot of similarities between this trade and the lee/coco trade - especially in the criticism its been getting.
Except
in this case we gave up the better player and we gave up draft picks instead of getting them.
Which is the exact opposite of the Lee trade.
We should've just fired Avery after he allowed the team to be Bavetta'd in the Finals like I called for and we'd have won the title last year and be in prime position for a repeat.

If you say so.
I just think the Mavs got a few breaks two years ago that they haven't gotten since. I didn't think they were a championship-caliber team then or now. Not with three or four dangling corpses out there calling themselves shooting guards. I suppose I'd feel better about trading Harris if we could have addressed that weakness instead.

Huh?
Is that sarcasm or do you really believe you were the only two who hated the trade?

Nobody
Feeds on praise and self-congratulation more than those two.

I don't recall
Anyone else starting a diary with no other purpose than to say "I told ya so". You're the big, bad iconoclast, I know, but I never understood your reasoning behind that, so I assumed it was because you wanted people to admit they were wrong to you.
by brettgardner on Mar 23, 2008 4:47 PM CDT up reply actions
Hey, whatever you think
You want to think that z and I "feed on praise and self-congratulation" more than anyone else, that's fine.
I think that's a pretty stupid statement, but whatever.

Of course
I wouldn't expect you to agree with it.

A diary called
"How bout those Mavs!" if I remember correctly.
by brettgardner on Mar 23, 2008 4:51 PM CDT up reply actions
Mmm
I suppose you could read it that way, but after going back and looking at it, implicit in the sentence is that Jason Kidd (old) sucks and we'd be better off with Harris (young).
by brettgardner on Mar 23, 2008 6:52 PM CDT up reply actions
Of course...
...I've never said Jason Kidd sucks, but hey, whatever floats your boat.
by Adam J. Morris on Mar 23, 2008 7:32 PM CDT up reply actions
You've said
He can't shoot and can't defend.
by brettgardner on Mar 23, 2008 7:42 PM CDT up reply actions
Both are pretty much true
He used to be a great defensive player. Not anymore. He's not a bad defender against bigger PGs, but he's no longer a good defender, and he's terrible against small PGs.
And he can't shoot. He never has been able to. 13-14 years ago, the joke was that he should be called Ason Kidd, because he has no J.
by Adam J. Morris on Mar 23, 2008 7:47 PM CDT up reply actions
he didnt' do too badly against parker today
his D is good enough. its a weird point to belabor at this point. the real problem is (and some alluded to this) is that avery is not letting kidd run the offense.
I didn't bring it up
Brett did.
That said, I absolutely agree that the biggest problem is Avery not letting Kidd run the offense.
by Adam J. Morris on Mar 23, 2008 7:50 PM CDT up reply actions
And of course...
What is funny is, back when Avery was a player, those were the knocks on him...was great at running an offense and distributing, but couldn't shoot and couldn't defend (although he was weaker against bigger PGs)...
It is as if Avery decided he needed to bring back himself to run his team...
by Adam J. Morris on Mar 23, 2008 7:49 PM CDT up reply actions
Yet
alot of times he has guarded the best players on the other team.
Who is a better defender than him on this team?
Josh Howard? Maybe but questionable...
Milton Bradley for MVP
Depends on the position
Of course, given that Jerry Stackhouse, Jason Terry and Tyronn Lue are the others getting guard minutes, what that tells you is that the Mavs have a lousy defensive backcourt.
I am continuing to wait for the beastliness of Antoine Wright, Malik Allen, and Jamaal Magloire to show itself, btw.
by Adam J. Morris on Mar 23, 2008 8:23 PM CDT up reply actions
Thats
on Avery, give them minutes.
Avery expects Magloire to instantly produce puting him in 2 minutes of garbage time.
Antione Wright has been shining when given the chance, but Avery needs to put faith into him.
Malik Allen already is a beast, just watch his sweet stroke.
But I hope there is lots of playing time for Wright in the near future with Dirk out.
Then we will see flashes of the future.
Milton Bradley for MVP
Thank you,
for reciting what everybody says about his defensive abilities. I also don't see how the lacking of a J 13 years ago effects today. There are innumerable examples of players improving their shooting long into their careers (though that isn't the case here either). Not really arguing with anything you say, just stating that your post was useless.
Also, the big issue in the trade is the 2 draft picks. Kidd over Harris or Harris over Kidd seems like a push to most...why would the Mavs give up 2 picks to make it happen??
Thing is
I'm not disagreeing with you really, but I've said that if the trade was made in order to improve in the playoffs, might as well let it play out first. Of course, with the injury today, that might be tougher.
For what it's worth, I don't think the Mavs addressed either of their glaring needs: SG and inside scoring, and so, from that standpoint, I don't like the trade. At least, I'd rather see Harris moved for a bigger weakness.
I think we might have to take a look at a guy like the extremely raw and basketball-silly Nick Young, who's done a pretty decent job as a rookie filling in for Arenas. Maggette, Monta Ellis (Jason Terry Jr.), Sefolosha, or Childress are the only other options I see, and some of those are easier to get than others.

how did you find that thread? are you talking about the one titles "Sturm on the Mavs" or some other one. they've completely gutted the search function.

another one
there was one about how they knew the rangers would replenish the farm system quickly (i believe this was around the time BA's top 5 systems came out). It talked about how a lot of fans were upset that we had a bad farm system, and he and z were cautioning everyone that we will quickly have a very good one after the tex trade and the draft. Of course, many people around here thought that would happen, but in the post it was a kinduva 'i and z told you so' theme....
the truth.
The unintentional irony...
of that comment coming from you is delicious.
"I know you're a bit dense but no, it doesn't. Obviously lying isn't a problem for me."
As is
The predictability of you making that comment.

You know
I did a quick search of your recent history here, to see what contributions you've been making that I may not be giving you credit for, and I found:
1. A few posts about you and Adam making up nicknames
2. A picture of a computer/console of some sort.
3. A diary about Robert Downey Jr. portraying a black man.
4. A diary about an eating contest
5. A court opinion
And of course, constant berating of me, which I always enjoy.
Though I'm not sure what it is you do here, except share Adam's last name. You don't do anything baseball-related anymore (thank God), so what's the deal?

It's tax season...
my busiest time of year. Although, if you'd like, I can look at your history and give a "brett gardner's greatest hits."

wow
did not realize you and adam were the only one against the trade. I guess if people don't agree with exactly what you or adam say they are in denial..great way to foster a community.
i apologize for bitterness but our franchise player just went down and hopefully it is not as bad as it seems but I dislike those that come in with an attitude of i was right all along. I am not saying that is what you trying for or implying but it appears that way.

the 9th pick in the 2008 NBA draft, the Dallas Mavericks select....OJ Mayo

No way
Stern owes us. I'm thinking he pulls the old "frozen envelope" and we end up with Michael Beasley.
It could happen, right!?!?!?!?

Mavs saying Dirk out 2 weeks
from espm.com
DALLAS -- The Dallas Mavericks expect to be without star forward Dirk Nowitzki for at least two weeks after Nowitzki was injured in the third quarter of Sunday's 88-81 loss to San Antonio.
Dirk Nowitzki
Nowitzki
A stoned-faced Mark Cuban walked out of American Airlines Center with two fingers aloft to reflect the initial two-week projection.
But the Mavericks owner stressed that the time frame is only preliminary and won't be confirmed until a more complete medical examination is made Monday.
Nowitzki crumpled to the floor and clutched his left leg in agony after attempting to block a shot by San Antonio's Ime Udoka. Nowitzki's leg appeared to fold awkwardly after Udoka's right leg came down on Nowitzki's as they landed.
Nowitzki started reaching for his ankle, then grabbed near his calf, slapping the floor in agony. He put a hand on his head, then didn't move while the team's orthopedist and athletic trainer worked on his lower leg. The arena was silent until Nowitzki sat up.
Nowitzki had 11 points and seven rebounds at the time, with San Antonio leading 56-54 and 3:18 left in the period.
In a statement released by the team, Nowitzki said: "I fell awkwardly and my left leg got caught underneath of me. I am going to get re-evaluated in the morning and I hope to have more information then."
The Mavericks' hope is that Nowitzki merely sustained damage to his left ankle -- an injury he historically recovers from as quickly as anyone in the league -- and avoided a knee injury.
