Monday Morning Things
Jarrod Saltalamacchia says that he thinks he's headed for Oklahoma if Gerald Laird isn't traded.
Jim Reeves writes that that is a bad idea, that the Rangers risk "losing emotionally" Salty by sending him down instead of keeping him in the majors. Reeves also says, interestingly enough, that the Rangers wanted Jordan Schafer instead of Saltalamacchia when they were negotiating the Teixeira trade last summer, but the Braves wouldn't do that.
Evan Grant has a piece up saying that Luis Mendoza solidified his hold on the #5 job with his performance yesterday, and also mentions that Milton Bradley will not be ready to play the field when the season starts.

I hate to say it
but i agree with Reeves. I don't think it's wise to have him split time. The only option? Trade Laird. It's Gerald freaking Laird for crying out loud. Trade Laird, dump Broussard, and I will be a happy man.
Hello Win Column!
If Laird
did so well against LHP, why wouldnt a platoon work? Now don't get me wrong, I hate platoons but in this case I believe it would be best for everyone until a trade could be secured. No?
I think Jerrod
will benefit more from playing everyday in OKC then platooning with Laird. He is only 22. He needs regular playing time.

I thought the Rangers
more or less concluded that the platoon messed up the rhythm of both catchers. I recall reading something from Wash about how it'd take Laird/Salty a while to get comfortable behind the plate after having a few days off not catching.
Maybe this was more of a Spring Training thought, but I still think that it makes sense for them to play every day until we trade one or the other (hopefully Laird) away.
Why do you hate platoons?
When executed well they allow you to maximize the value of your players.
Look at what the Braves were able to get out of LF last year.

whats ur beef
with Benny B dawg? He seems to be doing alright and seems to be an alright stop gap for Davis. Id much rather see him there then Cat.
Adam loves him some Lard
I'm not really surprised about Schafer
Scouts seem absolutely in love with him right now ("right now" being last summer to now). I wouldn't be surprised at all if our scouts preferred him. And on the Braves side, they have McCann at catcher and were losing Jones in CF, with no other clear heir apparent.
Yep
And obviously we would be more likely to be inquiring about stud OFers as opposed to stud catchers, strength up the middle be damned.

you
wouldn't think that if he didn't get Salty.

can you imagine
the backlash from media for trading Tex without getting any talent in return above AA?
i guess we'll know soon enough when some enterprising journalist (Galloway) realizes that with Salty in the minors, that's exactly what has happened
Jordan Schafer
Isn't even above A-Ball yet. He has a .769 career minor league OPS, and he has struck out an incredible 270 times to 95 walks already, in just three seasons. He may have raw potential, but he is a long, long ways away from the majors.
I don't know why we would have wanted him over Salty when we have Engel Beltre and Julio Borobon in the system.
Of course, that was before we swung the deal with Boston that netted Beltre... but JD already knew what he wanted from Boston.
Mendoza's blister
I hope that goes away quickly, for his sake and for that of the Rangers.
A working class hero is something to be.
I don't really see a problem with JD trying to maximize
value out of Salt Jar (no relation to Jar Jar) and Laird. Salt Jar should be at AAA until Laird is gone. That's really the only way that he gets the reps he needs. If he dominates in AAA, all the better for the Rangers.
Besides, the Rangers really don't need a player that's going to be emotionally crippled by not beating the incumbent in ST. If that's the case, I'd rather he be traded than Laird. There are a number of players who have been sent down to the minors who are more deserving than Salt Jar of an opening day spot.
This whole thing about not having a single player on the ML roster from the trade of Teixeira is ridiculous. I only care that the players the Rangers got back are on the field (or have been traded for players on the field) when they hang a few pennants.
If I owned a lightsaber, the blade color would be black light, so that I could use it to fight evil and to liven-up parties.
Apparently
from past years, Laird also gets emotionally crippled by not beating the incumbent in ST. He's still not over being beat out by Barajas.

Are you saying they don't need a player that's been emotionally crippled
by not beating out Rod Barajas?

The whole emotionally crippled thing
is just silly. The real reason to play Salty instead of Laird is that Salty has upside, and this season really doesn't matter. They'd be better off dumping Laird off for 50 cents on the dollar rather than have him gum up the works. Its not like he is going to have such a massive year that we will get a big time return for him.

I don't think he would be "emotionally crippled" by
going to OKC. His father has been on LSB and has stated that Jerrod knows he may/will be sent to OKC and he can handle it. They are looking at the longterm situation and not just what happens in ST.

Basically, there's no need to be in a hurry here, IMO. Otherwise, a dumb trade could result like
this rumored deal:
Esteban German for Meloan AND Pinango
Meloan alone is too much for German, IMO.
If I owned a lightsaber, the blade color would be black light, so that I could use it to fight evil and to liven-up parties.
Looks like the Reds are trying really hard to trade Belisle.
From rotoworld:
The Cincinnati Enquirer reports that Matt Belisle was able to throw at "100 percent" on Sunday.
Belisle had hurt his arm throwing too many changeups, but now appears to be fine. He's expected to pitch in a minor league game in the next couple of days.
He says he's hurt, they say he isn't, but he's not pitching to major league-ers.
If I owned a lightsaber, the blade color would be black light, so that I could use it to fight evil and to liven-up parties.
arm hurt from too many changeups?
I've never heard that one before...

It was fun
watching Saltalamacchia play yesterday. The Rangers perhaps have passed on the platoon strategy. We have a young catcher who needs to work behind the plate full time. Saltalamacchia's defense would benefit going to AAA and Saltalamacchia understands he is the one with an option and will work hard there. Don't trade Laird until we get value for a Major League catcher.

Trade laird
at the deadline for whatever he's worth and hopefully he will have done well and we can get a decent return but, either way Salty will be ready then (hell he is basicaly there now) and he can come up and provide a little youthful enthusiasm to our oft beleagured pitching staff for the second half of the year

Disappointing
It may technically be the best move for the club, but I can't help wishing that Salty would start the season in the majors.... watching a rebuilding team is less fun when one of your high ceiling guys isn't even out there and instead you're watching Laird try to bunt his way on for the millionth time.
