Really would like to see
Kason put together a very solid game today, before we head into the regular season
Probably...
...just a reward to a good organizational soldier.

gabbard
seriously looks terrible. wasting pitches, can't locate, can't throw a strike. in a seemingly low pressure situation, he is not delivering at all
gabby gabby gabby
I miss DeRo *sigh*
I hereby deem you Benny Brou Ha Ha<---Wash thinks you can hit lefties....in 2 months time you will be a full fledged Brouhaha..trust me on that one.
I've been saying this for quite a while now
...and I know there are others that agree - Gabbard doesn't strike me as a long-term answer, and I think it's more likely than not that he's out of the rotation for good by the ASB.
This isn't based off of my observations of Gabbard this spring, though he's certainly not doing anything to inspire much confidence...

Gabbard
I try not to put too much stock in ST, but Gabbard struggled at the end of the year and has gotten hit hard in ST. I have very serious doubts about him. Can you imagine starting him against the Tigers? - the Rangers would be better off having Tejeda or Wright start against them.

Gabbard... gives up a 3R HR and bunts into a double play...
good grief.

Minor league transactions from BA:
Released: RHP Jon Hollis, RHP Ivan Izquierdo, RHP Mike Wagner, RHP Jim Wladyka, RHP Brett Zamzow, LHP Dan Hoben, C Kevin Gossage, C Joe Hulet, 1B Jason Sowers, OF Ronnie Anderson, OF Luke Salas
No big surprises there.
I thought it was odd
that Wash would make that decision based on Spring Training. Granted, it was a great Spring Training, but you would think he would only say he is ready for the #3 spot after hitting like that in the regular season.
Guess we'll see if it carries over.

don't enjoy having to litsn to the Cubs announcers bash the Rangers.
BTW, if you have directv this game is on CSNC HD.

Evan thinks Byrd has struggled because he's been in rumored trade talks the entire spring.

Reed Johnson
From rotoworld:
FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal says the Cubs, Red Sox, Rays and Rangers are among the teams showing interest in Reed Johnson.

It looks like
Salty has been given the news that he's going down. Doesn't look like the same kid at the plate. He was ahead of Laird in nearly every catagory except HR and if you count the one in a B game he was only one behind with 3. I say trade him. You can get more for him than you could ever get for Laird.
so a trip to the minor leagues at age 22
is enough to send him into a mental collapse? even when its obvious that the trip would be temporary?
are you really his dad? you don't sound like it - and in another thread you spelled his name wrong. You might have been copying and pasting, but still - who does that?
if you really are his dad, shouldn't you be in his ear telling him to play like a professional and wait the insignificant amount of time he's going to have to wait? maybe i'm crossing the line here but I don't understand this pouting from him and it's almost worse that his dad not only thinks is justified but is also doing it.
Yes I am.
Who mentioned "mental collapse"? Uhhh, I believe I know how to spell my name. Insignificant amount of time? I'm sure you wouldnt be pissed if you did everything asked of you only to find they had there minds made up before ST. I believe his trip down will be temporary but it will be much longer than you seem to think. The time to trade Laird is before you break camp while his stats still look good. They have had teams interested but just shut the door. His stats have already taken a hit and he has a history of declining stats during the season. Now that they have made up there mind they ought to trade Salty and get something you will never get for Laird anyway.
He doesnt need me in his ear. He has always carried himself professionaly and will continue to do so. When you have proven yourself being pissed isnt pouting.
'mental collapse'
while it wasn't specifically mentioned, the implication was there if having "been given the news that he's going down" correlates to someone who "doesn't look like the same kid at the plate".
Just an observation.

Proven himself?
Not defensively and it's debatable whether he has proven himself on offense at the major league level either.
Hopefully he will rake in AAA and re-claim his status as our starting catcher after a few months. Of course the battle starts all over again in '09 when Teagarden will challenge for the right to be the starter.
lepricon
I think you have a poor evaluation of the situation
1st: again, i will say that if i were the gm/manager, id start him.
The Rangers have not decided that laird is their catcher for the next 5 years. More like the next 5 weeks.
Suggesting the rangers need to either play salty march 31st or trade him his silly. They acquired him for a reason, it was to get a long term catcher. If that involves a couple months in AAA working a bit extra on defense while they work on trades for laird, so be it. I dont blame the player for wanting to be in the majors, but if you are his dad you should be giving him perspective on the big picture situation not cursing the organization for stupidity in moves you dont know the motives behind.
Never made
that suggestion. Well he is my son and he has all the perspective he needs. Who the hell is cursing the organization? Am I the only poster on this board scratching their heads? I think not!
What was tihs supposed to mean?
Now that they have made up there mind they ought to trade Salty and get something you will never get for Laird anyway.
And cursing the organization didnt mean literally cursing them out, just angry at them.
insignificant amount of time
it absolutely is. what is a couple of months when you are still in your early 30's? Even if it is till the trade deadline, who cares? The kid hasn't spent ANY time at AAA up until now. 2 months is nothing.
You know, if you can see that he "doesn't look like the same kid at the plate," so can the Rangers, and I doubt it's something they want to see. It doesn't even make sense at this point - there hasn't been any news about the catching situation yet. True, there is plenty of innuendo but at the point you aren't told something definitive, you should go out there and rake and not worry.
btw
I do believe that you are his father, just confused by this post.
like I said, probably just a copy/paste thing.
I really
dont understand everyones feelin that AAA is a necessity. Most any baseball person will tell you that AAA is made up mostly (not all) of guys rehabbing, guys that will never be good enough for the show but will ride that paycheck for all its worth and old guys that still think they have what it takes. There are alot of great players in the majors today that never sniffed AAA but made it from AA.
I might be completely off base with the statement I made about how he looked at the plate, however, he looked good on defense ( so I probably am wrong) and we have to remember that they told him they dont care about whether he hits or not, just work on catching, which is what he's been doing.
BTW When you're in the clubhouse with the guys, you just seem to know whats going down before it does.
I agree but
Salty needs to play everyday for him to work on his defense. Unfortunately right now the only place he can get playing time everyday behind the plate is in OKC.
The guy who I point to as an example for Salty is Hank Blalock. He initially skipped AAA after a blistering spring. He spent about 6 weeks up in the majors and was overwhelmed. He went back down to AAA and got back in his groove. Came up the next year and was an All Star. He had probably one of the best 2 year runs for a 3B in club history.
Salty doesn't need that much time. His bat has shown to be ML ready. If he can go down and work with the instructors and play everyday I think he could have a similar reaction and come back toward the middle of this year and become one of the top catchers in baseball very quickly.

The throw
was a little high to the 2B side but Vasquez didnt even reach for it. Might as well blame it on Salty instead of one on the 25 eh?
Which is correct
I specifically said the throw should have been stopped.
Should have been stopped and not stopped = error, runner advances to 3rd.
But it was still an off target bad throw that had no chance to get a runner that didnt have a good jump.
Its not like Im a salty hater, Ive said dozens of times I want him to start. If it were up to me I would tell laird to shut up and play against lefties. Salty could occasionally DH against lefties and give him a full season. If laird caused problems in the clubhouse then id move him and just get the best you can.
But its a gameday thread and he made a bad throw so I commented on it.
Salty is under a lot of pressure
and will be his whole career. He keeps referring that the Braves brought him up last year and he stayed (on the bench), I would rather be playing. He is 22 (a kid) and Laird is a better catcher at this particular time.
Glad you care about your son, but that fact will make it hard for you to be objective, I have never been objective when it came to my son, he is the best regardless of facts.
I have a hunch we will be hearing a lot of good things about Salty for long time.
You know, I'm just be happy Salty is not being bounced around
like a pinball between poisitions again this season.
I understand your frusteration with the organization. I vehemently oppose this move myself, because I know Laird is an overrated crap of a player, who should be the right-handed half of a platoon somewhere, not playing full-time here.
But it appears this is the way it's gonna be, and we just have to live with it for now - I'm actually thankful that the organization has sent Salty to AAA instead of keeping him as the backup on the Major League team. I would think that would have been the ultimate insult to your son, to make him the backup to an inferior player, and make him scrap and fight for every at bat behind the plate.
At least this way Salty can catch full time, which is what he wants to do. Sooner or later (hopefully sooner) Laird will be gone, and Salty will have his much deserved shot at the full-time job. Intil then, I'll be waiting anxiously for that day, and hoping some other catcher in the league breaks his arm, so we can trade Laird, and set this situation right.
MLB's Gameday sucks right now
Hopefully it is only because it is Spring Training. It never used to be this crappy.
Sure
On the Major League level, though?

Murton over Byrd?
Does anybody else have an inkling that Byrd is not going to return to what he was early last year? It has always been in the back of my mind... Murton might have been worth it to go after.
I agree.
Last was Byrd's career year. He will go back to his normal self this year. JD will try to trade him at the deadline and only hear laughter coming from the other end of the phoneline.

poor Nellie Cruz
The last thing he needed to do was hit .211 this spring.
He never seems to "get it" in the bigs.
I hereby deem you Benny Brou Ha Ha<---Wash thinks you can hit lefties....in 2 months time you will be a full fledged Brouhaha..trust me on that one.
if he wasnt goign to make the team either way
he may as well have a bad spring.
If he had hit 350 the rangers might have still released him, but it would have been a great likelihood for him to get picked up.
he might slip through. id like to keep him around for another season.
I'll admit
I'm frustrated that he failed to land a spot. And I'll keep an eye on where he ends up, still thinking he has a near unlimited capability. I even wonder if playing winter ball and then the Carib series (a year round stint) didn't wear him down some, although realizing his AB's showed only greater patience to take walks, his power bursts just didn't make it to Arizona.

Tedeja
compared to the last game, he is keeping the ball down much better.

winning means you are doing better than you have done before"
On
the broadcast, it sounded like the game winning hit was a leaker that just got past one of the infielders. Etai happens. :) Maybe Tejeda IS getting his head, hands, and command in better shape.

Engel Beltre
was this his first 2 at bats of the year? how did he look, anybody that saw him???
"No, Donny, these men are nihilists, there's nothing to be afraid of."
Swung at every pitch he saw
1st AB - 1st pitch fly to medium-deep RF gap.
2nd AB - hit 2nd or 3rd pitch for a hard grounder right at the 2Bman - Beltre made it close - quick like bunny.
I think he just had 1 or 2 routine chances in the OF. On Pie's 9th inning triple, Beltre hustled like a dog to get to the ball at the RF gap fence. I wonder, if MY had relayed his throw in if Pie could have made it to 3rd. Good hustle by Beltre.
