Jays lock up Rios
$65 mil over 6 years + a $15 million option for 2015. That's one hell of bargain when compared to the moronic contracts of Drew and Pierre.
With Wells locked up till 2014 and Snider lurking in the AA, looks like the Jays will have one of the best outfields in baseball for the next decade or so.
Sabean's gonna regret turning the Rios for Lincecum deal down

Jays
all their spending seems futile to me with the YankSox in their division...they should campaign for a new one. I like a few of their pieces but I doubt it will be enough anytime soon.

regret turning down rios for lincecum?
since when is (at the time) a couple years of a 25 HR corner OF w/ good defense worth more than 5 years of a top of the rotation pitcher?

As I recall
Sabean wouldn't green-light that deal, though it sounds like they came close to doing it.

3 year of Rios
It was 3 years of a two time all-star who came second in the Derby. He plays spectacular RF defence and can play center pretty solidly, he came up as a centerfielder. He'll be a perenial 300/30/100 guy, who would play center on a lot of teams.
I heard Sabean wanted to pull the trigger so he could have someone to build his offence around. But the people above him were still reeling from the Nathan and Lariano deal.
The deal might have gotton done if they hadn't overpayed for Rowand.

That's silly
Sabean was a genius for trading Liriano when he did. (There's a guy around here who actually believes that, btw.)
Although, in all seriousness, please don't quote All-Star appearances and Derby Finishes as reasons one guy is better than another. Surely you can find better stats than those, no?

all-star appearances do have some weight
last year... .297/27/85/ - 17 steals.... hr totals have jumped from 10->17->24 and will continue to do so.
He'll avg out somewhere near 300/370/540 for the next 6-7 years. Those are elite numbers for a plus defender in centerfield
don't you think?

Yah All-Star appearances have a lot of weight
Let's go get Mark Redman, NOW!!!

I love how you missed my point entirely
I said all-star appearances have "some" weight, especially when you get picked from a team with other potential all-stars
I'm sure Redman got picked when he was on a shitter like KC, as the lone rep, when he had a flukey season as age 33. Rios is 27 and still maturing.
If San Fran had gotton Rios, he was gonna play CF. A CFer with a 900 OPS is pretty friggin elite, Rios has a 852 OPS last year and hasn't had his "break out" season yet

No
I got your point. But you have to realize that you quoted a guy's Derby finish as a reason he was good, so you're going to get made fun of cause that's the way it works when you say something that dumb. And All-Star appearances do have "some" weight, I guess... if only by virtue of the fact they carry more weight than Derby finishes. I could not possibly care less if a guy is named an All-Star. It doesn't matter at all in determining how good a player is. It really doesn't. Sorry.
As for Rios: You missed my point on entirely. I wasn't refuting your proclamation that Rios is good, I was making fun of you for quoting his All-Star appearances and Derby finish as statistical proof to back up your claim. Yes, Rios is good. He was good last year, and he was good in '06. He can hit and he plays a good RF and may be able to play a good CF (I've never seen him in CF, but he's played there in the bigs without embarrassing himself).
I'd like to know how you know that Rios is gonna break out, though. Him averaging 300/370/540 over the next 7 years is a pretty amazing number. What makes you so sure he's gonna continue to get better at that sort of rate?

educated guess?!?!?!
"What makes you so sure he's gonna continue to get better at that sort of rate? "
You can make the case about any player in the majors. How do you know Kinsler's gonna get better? or BMac for that matter? I'm not saying they won't get better but I'm just going on your point.
I think Rios would have had a better 2nd half, if it weren't for him being in the derby. I think he got the derby hangover, if such thing exits (Abreu in 06).
I projected the 300/370/540 based on the improvements he's made over the last 3 years. He was 297/354/498 last year, the numbers I predicted aren't tooo much of a stretch, considering the Jays' offense should be improved overall.

Well...
You are talking about this over his age 27-33 seasons. You are assuming that he takes a significant step forward, and maintains that new, higher level of performance into his decline years.
That seems to be a stretch.

Our friend here is quite the optimist
He has Botts with a .900 OPS this year as well:

And the only way Sabean regrets not trading Lincecum is if Timmy gets hurt...

All-Star
All-Star appearances have no validity because
1. The fans pick the players and most fans are morons going off of name recognition.
2. Each team has one player.
#1 gives people like Jason Giambi and Pudge more appearances than they deserve while #2 gives us "All-Stars" like Mark Redman and Danny Baez
And with the 22nd overall selection the Dallas Cowboys select Jonathan Stewart.

x
if even Brian Sabean wasn't stupid enough to trade Tim Lincecum then you know the guy is pretty special.
I think the Giants are a joke of a franchise so I would have kind of enjoyed seeing that go down.

+1
I feel sorry for Lincecum, though. The kid is going to absolutely waste at least 6 years of what should be a very fine career in SF. Wonder how many wins the Giant offense will wind up costing him?

true
that offense is gonna suck hard for atleast 2-3 years... and there's no way Rowand is gonna have a repeat of his 07 season in any of him next 5... he seems to have a Greer-esque demeanor to his game and will break down soon.

Did we not...
Turn down Rios & McGowan for Wilkerson or Mench.
If I remember right that was bad judgement.
by sftxfan on Mar 25, 2008 8:57 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
wow
JD must have really highly valued Wifferson and Mench. The
2 players the Rangers ended up cutting for a 27 yr old all-star and a potential ace?!?!? I'm sure the Jays are happy about that.
by Baseball North on Mar 25, 2008 10:16 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Dustin McGowan
I don't think anyone considers him a potential ace.
I know the Jays were interested in both Mench and Wilkerson, but I don't think there was a Rios & McGowan offer on the table.
I could be wrong, though.
by Adam J. Morris on Mar 25, 2008 11:10 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Most people do think he's got ace potential
McGowen has overpowering stuff that will make him a #1 or 2 starter very soon. Umpires have come up to Gibbons(Jays' manager) and said they love his stuff.
In his first full year in the Majors or first 3/4 of a year, he was 12-10/4.08era in 27 starts. He's definitely got more upside than Hurley or BMac.
I also highly doubt that the Rios, McGowen deal was on the table.

I remember a...
Rios plus for either Wilks or Mench but I can not remeber the other. That was when Rios came off an injury filled down year and I could not see why we needed both Wilks and Mench.
