Around SBN: In Crunch Time, Spurs Don't Change Their Game

Thursday a.m. things

You know, every winter, I get all fired up about spring training starting...

And then, all fired up about exhibition games starting up...

Because I'm ready for some baseball...

And that buzz lasts for a little while...and then, I end up hitting a point where I think, "I'm sick of spring training and exhibition games.  I want the season to start."

Well, the season is close to starting.  And it is about time...I'm ready...

Luis Mendoza's blister is sending him to the d.l., although this appears to be largely procedural, and he'll still apparently make his start on April 12, as planned.

Richard Durrett has some quotes from Saltalamacchia and Laird in a piece about Salty getting sent down.  Both are saying the right things, at this point...

Kevin Sherrington says Edinson Volquez's spring training performance is bad news for Rangers fans.  Personally, I don't get that.  If I had the chance to wave my hands and reverse that deal right now, there's no way I would.  I hope Volquez succeeds in Cincy, and Hamilton does even better for Texas.

Anthony Andro has a Rangers spring recap, with some love for, among others, Kaz Fukumori and David Murphy.

Jim Reeves says the Rangers should name Michael Young the team captain.  Meh.

Salty

One of the knock on benefits that I think there may be in AAA is the opportunity for him to gain a repoire with some of the guys down there. It could benefit him over the long term to spend some time with Hurley et al since he may spend a good part of his career catching him. Also, it could benefit him to catch a vet like Patterson. Anyway, I think he could learn a lot, hit well, and develop a repoire with several future members of the rotation. Not too bad.

Clearly that is...

...Reeves running out of things to type about spring training.

Pure fluff.

Yay, the Rangers are in first place!

I agree...

...but I think it would be neat to honor a guy who's done nothing but perform for this club for years. Not as important as Reeves makes it out to be, though.

lol

indeed!

When I was in Surprise 2 weekends ago, Young, Kinsler, Cruz, Alfonzo and Salty were all signing autographs after a simulated game. Young was sitting in one of those trainer carts with his head down, and could barely make small talk or eye contact with any of the fans--even the kids. The other 4 guys were standing up or crouching down next to the kids, clearly into it, and very gracious with their time and sharpies.

The contrast in attitudes couldn't have been more clear to me. I don't want that guy as the face of my franchise, even in name only.

Yay, the Rangers are in first place!

good point

I imagine the years of perennial losing has gotten to him, and if we start winning, I hope he comes around - but then again, he's a pure professional, so maybe things could never change with him...?

heh

I have pictures and everything. Just haven't had time...been out of town essentially ever since my trip. And we're rolling out a new version of our app this week. I'll get it up before first pitch on Monday. Maybe. ;-)

If they name Michael Young Team Captain

does that mean he will hound the front office into a trade to NY or Bos?

Adam

Do we get the opening game here in Houston on FSSW or will it be blacked out. I checked the DirecTV schedule and it says it's showing the Rangers game on that Monday, but i'm not sure if it will be blacked out or not...

the truth.

by Longhorn on Mar 27, 2008 11:10 AM CDT reply actions

We should get it

If you have Direct TV, and it shows up on the Direct TV schedule, then it should be showing in Houston.

by Adam J. Morris on Mar 27, 2008 11:25 AM CDT up reply actions

I am lazy

Do I have a shot at opening day if I do the Direct TV thing in the next day or so? Curious if it is a long process to get everything set up.

by Houston27 on Mar 27, 2008 11:32 AM CDT up reply actions

It depends

Who is your current cable/satellite provider?

by Adam J. Morris on Mar 27, 2008 11:36 AM CDT up reply actions

I would think...

...Direct TV could do it next week, but I'm not sure about doing it by Monday.

I need to email and find out how many games Direct TV will have of the Rangers, but I know that you, at the very least, get the alternate FSSW feed games, along with some of the syndicated games.

If you are interested in doing Direct TV, shoot me an email, and I'll do the refer-a-friend discount for you.

by Adam J. Morris on Mar 27, 2008 12:03 PM CDT up reply actions

I have the sports package on DirecTV

with all the Fox Sports channels, and 99 percent of the games I try to watch on YES, NESN, Comcast Sports or any Fox network except FSN West and FSN Prime Ticket (the two LA-area ones) say "programming not available in your area." I can have it on FSSW and watch the pregame show, and as soon as the game starts the screen goes black and that message pops up. The channel guide will still show the game as being shown, though. I don't subscribe to MLB Extra Innings; I have MLB.tv because it's a lot cheaper.

The annoying thing since switching to DirecTV though... I can watch any Rangers game on MLB.tv except for when they play the Angels, in which case the game is blacked out on MLB.tv and I have to watch it on TV. I get FSN West and can watch games on there, but I'm too far north for KCOP, KCAL, etc. to be considered my local channels. Whenever an LA local channel has the game, I can't watch it on MLB.tv and I can't watch FSSW for the reason stated above, but I don't have the option of watching that local LA channel. When that happens, my only choice is to use the gameday audio stream of KRLD (luckily, MLB.tv subscribers also get access to that and radio is never blacked out).

Volquez doing well is bad news

Because it means we'll be subject to article after article about how the Rangers desperately need pitching and always trade away their good young pitchers. That is the only bad news for the fans.

I want Volquez to do well, because I think he is a neat pitcher (same reason I cheer for Chris Young to be successful).

by JBImaknee on Mar 27, 2008 11:38 AM CDT reply actions

Galloway

I can see him harping on this for years if Volquez does well.

Chris Young

I remember some health questions about Young around the time we traded him. I wonder if his struggles last year will become a yearly issue. If so, does this mean JD was right and he gets a little slack on that trade?

by Jack Nicholson 1974 on Mar 27, 2008 11:52 AM CDT up reply actions

No

Because he threw in AGon. People will point to our hole at 1B even though they will forget that we had a gold glover who was under our control for another 4 years at the time of the trade ahead of him.

by bigsteve on Mar 27, 2008 11:54 AM CDT up reply actions

People also forget

That AGon is a gold-glove caliber fielder as well and Teixeira could have moved to the outfield...

by JBImaknee on Mar 27, 2008 12:12 PM CDT up reply actions

Sure,

the Rangers could have forced Teixeira to move to right field, but I'm not sure that Mark would have been happy about that move since he's a gold glover at first base.

My original idea a couple of years ago was to keep AG and trade Teixeira for a front line pitcher.

by Redcaps on Mar 28, 2008 7:00 AM CDT up reply actions

Why not trade AGon

Why trade a proven young player who you have under club control for 4 more years when you could trade an unproven young player? AGon was gonna get traded. Only bad thing is we included him in that deal instead of making a seperate deal with him as the centerpiece.

by bigsteve on Mar 28, 2008 11:29 AM CDT up reply actions

Absolutely

I have no problem with the idea of trading AGon, it was just the wrong deal to do so.

Health Issues

That sounds kina funny now...JD trading some player because of health issues. I thought that's when he signs them!

What "Plan" are we on now?

by Clueless on Mar 27, 2008 12:05 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm in favor of naming MY captain if...

...it means some other team will give us 50 cents on the dollar talent-wise for him when they take that ridiculous contract of his off our hands.

If anyone thinks A-Rod was "overpaid" when he was a Ranger I'd like to know what they think $13MM a year for MY's age 32-36 seasons will be.

Right around the time all the young talent is ready to contend is when the organization will realize that Ron Washington is the wrong man for the job.

18 mil

by bigsteve on Mar 27, 2008 11:52 AM CDT up reply actions

just a minor correction

Michael Young inf
4 years/$10.5M (2004-07), plus 2008 club option
5 years/$80M (2009-13)
signed extension 3/07
as part of extension, Texas exercised $5M 2008 club option
09-13: $16M annually (total of $15M deferred)
no-trade protection 2007-09, limited no-trade protection from 2010 to May, 2011 (submits list of 8 clubs to which he'd accept trade)
receives 10-and-5 rights in May, 2011

Thanks for the correction...

...I think I left out the deferred payments.

Of course that only makes those 32-36 years look worse.

Right around the time all the young talent is ready to contend is when the organization will realize that Ron Washington is the wrong man for the job.

by Chad Crudup on Mar 27, 2008 3:58 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm very excited

about the offense right now. Regarding the trade, it looks to me that both teams may have undervalued their own player. For Texas, that seems to be a trend regarding it's young pitching.

by SteveP on Mar 27, 2008 12:16 PM CDT reply actions

Jeter...

Does he actually wear a "C" on his jersey? I really don't think he does... but I could be wrong

no he doesnt

and i doubt MY would.

Id be fine with it, but wont be campaigning for it.

now if the rangers finally make the playoffs and make some noise in the next couple years, then id be campaigning for it.

by DShep on Mar 27, 2008 2:43 PM CDT up reply actions

I only brought it up...

because Reeves made this point, and I didn't think it was exactly accurate.

Off the top of my head, I can only think of two players who wear the "C" among current teams: Red Sox catcher Jason Varitek and Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter.

Troy I.

by tdi1985 on Mar 27, 2008 2:49 PM CDT up reply actions

Only Varitek actually wears it now...

although Mike Sweeney also did the past few years when he was with the Royals.

by TexasTiger on Mar 27, 2008 2:59 PM CDT up reply actions

Volquez doing well is bad news...

It could get even worse if Danks pans out and McCarthy keeps hitting the DL on a regular basis. That would make 3 young pitchers the Rangers traded away while telling us that the real key to building a pitching staff is to develop it from within. If that happens people will start to really question Daniels' ability to judge pitching talent.

Better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6.

by LSBUser on Mar 27, 2008 5:56 PM CDT reply actions

So what happens

When Young goes to the DL again this year and fades down the stretch, Danks is mediocre again, and Volquez shows to be JAG after the NL sees him a couple times?

by bigsteve on Mar 27, 2008 6:55 PM CDT up reply actions

Not sure that's ever been a question...

yep

Ricardo Rodriguez and Juan Dominguez would certainly agree with that
