McCarthy Projection
really, Longhorn - think he'll be injured for the entire season?
BTW - in case you forgot, there's not supposed to be discussion in those projection threads. thats why we have these.
as for Clueless's comment - dumb.

Huh
Clueless's comment got deleted, but not Longhorn's projection.
If you don't like Longhorn's prediction, I'm glad I didn't go with my prediction of 22/7.1/24/36.90. McCarthy becomes a reliever, pitches only one-third of an inning each outing, gets all of his outs through Ks (plus an extra couple due to pass balls), really pitches poorly but gets bailed out everytime. So yeah, predicting a season-ending injury (or trapped in a well) is much more reasonable.
What happened to my old signature?

its not that i didn't like his prediction
but is a different sort of prediction and I was wondering why he thought that.
clueless's thing was dumb just cause he's evaluating a trade based on events that could not have been predicted at the time of the trade

Deleted?
What's up with that? I agreed with Longhorn as to the 0/0/0/0 because I think B-Mac is going to have injury problems all year., which I then followed with an observation that it would rekindle the whole Danks trade argument. I don't think that I commented as to the merit of the trade itself...but I honestly don't remember. It wasn't that big of a deal...
What "Plan" are we on now?

Whatever
I tried to go back and see what I said...maybe it was dumb, but it's gone.
I don't think I was deleted simply because I included a comment, as three others still exist. Apparently, somebody didn't like the content of my comment. My mistake.

No
It was deleted because I've asked people to put just their projections in the format I requested.
You didn't have a projection -- it was just a comment.
If you want to go back and put 0/0/0/0 in as your projection, that's fine. Saying "I agree" to someone and then offering commentary isn't a valid projection.

And seriously...
You think I deleted a comment because I didn't like the content of it?
Do you really think that I like the content of every other comment that goes up on this site?
If I deleted all the comments whose content I didn't like, I wouldn't have time to post. Or work, probably.

No offense, Adam
Perhaps I assumed that due to ab03's recurring reference to the comment as "dumb", that's why it was deleted. Boy, this is a tough crowd for proper procedure.
Trust me, I'll read the fine print next time. Peace!

Yeah
i hate to say it, i love Bmac, but i don't like elbow problems with the type of fluid buildup that is causing him to sit out so long, we'll see. I really hope i'm wrong though.
the truth.

BMac's problems
elbow problems + shoulder problems + blister problems + poor walk rate + poor k rate + tons of flyballs + a straight high 80s fastball
= a pitcher that probably shouldn't be counted on for much

And none of which
he had a history of before he joined the Rangers. Isn't it fantastic to know we can project a guy's career from one season, rather than, you know, the rest of his career.

Meh
We've been seeing it both ways. Mccarthy and Laird on one end and Murphy on the other.

Young pitchers flame out all the time
McCarthy certainly looks like one of them to me. From what I saw last season, every single problem that I listed above is legit. A pitcher with all of that working against him doesn't have much chance for success in the ML. Now if all the sudden he gets his elbow and shoulder healthy, and doesn't have the blister problem, and regains some velocity and command, and stops giving up so many fly balls, then you've got someone with some real potential. But I can't recall many pitchers that are able to correct that many faults in one season.
I saw your prediction of 16 wins, 177 innings, 150 k, and 3.83 era. If he hits even one of those marks, I will print out this post and eat it.

Or it could be
that a lot of those things were connected. The injury caused a change to the delivery which sapped velocity and command. It happens all the time, especially with young pitchers. As far as I can tell, nothing about his injury seems long-term, so I'm wondering why a few injuries seem to doom a guy to scrubville in your opinion, especially relative to what he's done the rest of career. It'd be different if it was TJ or shoulder tear, but this is just a muscle strain. It's not that serious from a career standpoint.
And don't worry, when he hits those numbers, I'll ensure you never hear the end of it.

I agree with part of your comment
I don't think McCarthy's career is doomed to failure becuase of some freak injuries - yet.
But you have to remember, it was a "muscle strain" that sidelined Akinori Otsuka and Francisco Liriano in years past - and look how things turned out for those two.
I'm still trying to be optimistic for McCarthy, but it's still in the back of my mind how serious this could turn out to be. If he has any setbacks in his recovery at all, it's going to be gravely concerning.

That's hilarious - I think ERA is the only one you might have to worry about.

McCarthy
I still think he's primed to have a good year, but I don't think he's gonna exceed 120 innings or so.
I projected him at 100, which was about what he had last year.
by lonestarJon on Mar 28, 2008 4:19 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
If he only pitches 100 innings
That isn't a good year no matter what his production in those 100 innings might be.
Better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6.
