Daniels comments on deal

According to Bob Przybylo, Robinson Tejeda will in fact be designated for assignment to clear room for Dustin Nippert to make the opening day roster. Two comments from Daniels:

"He's going to take that last bullpen spot," Daniels said. "He's a big, durable guy who we feel can do many different things for us."

"Dustin's been a starter in the past, but he's also been an effective late-inning reliever," Daniels said.

Just another reason why the rangers will be a last place team this year. Try having some fate in your pitchers in the system. Tejeda and Littleton deserve a shot.

Tejeda was traded for anyway

Nippert is as much a rangers product as tejeda is.

Littleton simply didnt pitch well in the spring and doesnt need to be handed a mlb job. This is the rangers, there will be relief spots for littleton to take.

"Littleton simply didnt pitch well in the spring and doesnt need to be handed a mlb job."

Don't you have this backwards?? Here's a guy (Nippert) who's had limited ML success, being handed a job over a guy who's been with this organization since he was drafted and has shown he can pitch at this level. And how do you figure he hasn't pitched well this spring?? He had one really bad outing, but other than that he's been pretty good.

by MarkDale on Mar 28, 2008 11:55 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well youve got me there

I said that on littleton based on just my memory of his outings this spring. I guess my memory was being a little cruel. Though a .300 average against with 2 ks to 6 walks isnt a powerhouse performance and i still wouldnt say he hasnt pitched well, on the whole he hasnt been that bad and certainly better than nippert.

But its not really littleton that is on the line here, we all know littleton will be up soon enough and while he may deserve a job its not a large injustice to keep him in AAA for a bit. Though I did complain about him being down last year. Im confusing myself.

Basically, Ill take sending littleton down for a bit to trade up in talent from tejeda to nipper with a decent shot at keeping tejeda anyway.

Yep

It may be evidence why the Rangers will be a last place team this year...but it's also evidence for why I believe they will be competing in 2010-2011. You are DFAing a guy who is the same age as Nippert, but doesn't have near the upside. If you are going to spend the next two seasons letting guys work through their lumps then you want the guys with the best upside doing it. That's why the Rangers are keeping Nippert and DFAing Tejeda.

That

...is well put.

Well

Is that the reality, though? I noticed that line, too.

What's the over/under on number of starts Nippert makes in 2008-2009? 15?

He's going to displace Hurley and Harrison this year and one of the next comers in 2009? What if Jennings sticks?

The reality is Nippert's a sideways step, and maybe worse because we don't know he's a better BP pitcher than Tejeda. He may have a little bigger repertoire, but Tejeda's totally lapped him in ML effectiveness.

I will wait to see results, while not being sure if he's even going to get the ball a lot. Like I said in another thread, moves like this show how pitching retarded this org is. It still takes me aback sometimes...

Good

He's going to displace Hurley and Harrison this year and one of the next comers in 2009? What if Jennings sticks?

Well, if Nippert and Jennings play well enough to put off Hurley and Harrison, then that is a good thing. The Rangers job is to put the best 5 starters on the mound, not promote people for the mere sake of promoting them. If Nippert earns a spot in the rotation, and the other 4 are good and stick, then I''m fine with waiting for Harrison and Hurley.

The problem is when Texas plays mediocre guys because they have experience, not young guys because they have potential. That is the big difference between a Nippert and a Jamey Wright or Bruce Chen. Nippert is a gamble, but at least he is a gamble where the maximum payoff is more than just getting your money back

Yes

it's reality. You are talking like there won't be enough opportunities to go around, and I find the "Tej[e]da's totally lapped him in ML effectiveness" to be an odd statement. I guess you're factoring ST pretty heavily?

by Brett Perryman on Mar 29, 2008 11:12 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

What?

Tejeda: 254.2 ML IP, 4.91 ERA
Nippert: 70 ML IP, 6.43 ERA

That's all I'm referring to. Obviously Tejeda's a year younger.

If one of the veteran starters gets dealt this year, still a dubious possibility, there'll be more starts to distribute around.

In the meantime, Nippert takes this nebulous long relief role, which he won't grow out of until a starter(s) goes down with injury or ineffectiveness.

It seems a little ADD. McCarthy's back...in May, to displace Mendoza who's ready...right now.

Maybe I'm overstating the need for young starters to get the ball consistently. Maybe I'm overstating the ability of Hurley and Harrison, who otherwise are deserving. Nippert will have to be better than them, or else be justified by his roster spot.

He'll need the same long audition to show whatever ability he has. Is this org going to give him that? In Arizona he wasn't even in the conversation about starting.

I just think it's diminishing returns, and disorganized when JD could just put the younger Tejeda in the BP, and go with the current rotation depth.

Who cares how much depth you have if you're not going to give it a consistent chance?

Go Strangers.

by hightowersmith on Mar 29, 2008 11:51 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

One caveat

If Nippert is as good at a late-inning role as JD says, he'll find a place here. Everyone seems to be calling him a starter, though.

Go Strangers.

Well, ignore those people

He's going to need to establish himself as a reliever before starting is even a part of the conversation, at least in my opinion. And they are obviously intending to use him as a reliever and have said as much already.

Tejeda

You fail to mention that Tejeda has regressed every year

2005 - 3.57ERA 1.377WHIP
2006 - 4.28ERA 1.561WHIP
2007 - 6.61ERA 1.783WHIP

Why does

it seem like every young pitcher the Rangers have is groomed to be in the bullpen?

Milton Bradley for MVP

by miles on Mar 28, 2008 10:55 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

It doesn't...

Gabbard (26 years old) and McCarthy (23) are both in the rotation. That's not to mention Mendoza (24) who is filling in while McCarthy is hurt. Then there's a ton of young guys in both AAA and AA being developed for the rotation.

So ummmm...I don't know what you're talking about.

OT - random LSB 2.0 comment

Z's got 3 Nippert threads started, the game day thread is still kickin', I'm watching a few fanposts for new comments - why is it that LSB 2.0 makes these tasks sooo much more time-consuming and unpleasant than LSB 1.0 did? I thought an upgrade was supposed to benefit the users' experience?

Not ranting, just ... I don't know ... somebody please tell me that LSB will be nimble and user-friendly within, say, a month. Give me hope that the geeks behind this "upgrade" GET IT.

Elsewise, sheesh, why be so unnecessarily destructive?

fine for me

you guys need better computers =p

I still like the new site a lot, but if they can get a stripped down version also available for mobile devices and people who want fast/simple, that would be ideal

I have noticed, it takes at least 10-15 seconds longer for threads to load... the only upside is, they're auto updating, so if you just want to sit on one (like a gameday thread) you can do so. And once I get a thread fully loaded, I'm fine. But going back and forth between multiple threads - that has become a pain in rear.

Not much I can do about it, though - I've considered turning off the avitars, which I didn't like at first, but they've grown on me.

I'm with you....

at work (where I have no choice in my connection, browser, or computer) this site is almost unreadable for me. Just takes too long, and it's actually gotten a little better.

At home it's better but the old site was so much more nimble.

I'm sure I'll get used to it but I'm not as active on here as I used to be.

Big time negative on this complaint. I'm on an absolutely terribly slow connection in China and it works great. I especially love the auto-refresh. I would suggest upgrading your browser to the latest version and latest java build. I'm using Safari 3.1 without any problems whatsoever.

Sorry about the slow loading

We're still working to speed up load times, and it'll be a priority of ours for a long time. Things will only get speedier from here on out.

Good 'ol Bob Przybylo

You know me, I don't take anything seriously unless I get the confirmation from Bob Przybylo.

Not to sound like an ass, but seriously... if you're gonna be a writer, at least do your readers the favor of changing your name to something readable and pronounceable.

Am I the only one finding it severely annoying that this article was written by a guy named Bob Przybylo? Or finding it absolutely stunning that there is even a person named Bob Przybylo?

I'm sorry, I'm just annoyed because I have spent the last 10 minutes trying to figure out how that would be pronounced...

Good grief

Names. It's priz (like the start of prism) then beh-low (almost like buy low).

Now, how come you don't have the Biblical and northern European "h" in your name?

(just kidding, of course).

You are sentenced to spend at least two days researching this:
