John Goddard

Any you think you have accomplished a lot in life!  Apparently this dude wrote a list when he was 15 of things he would like to accomplish in life.  It is truly amazing how many he has done, and the list in itself is very extensive.

http://www.johngoddard.info/life_list.htm

I think the only thing I had in mind when I was 15 was making the sports teams, and trying to get laid (wasn't real good at either).

Hmmm...
I wish I had the maturity at 15 to come up with a list of goals like that.  However, my list would be vastly different.  Many of the things on his list I would have no interest in.

However, visiting all MLB parks and NFL stadiums would have been something on my list.

I could not
have composed such a list when I was 15.  No way.

Unless that photo on his bio
Is deliberately unflattering, he's gaining on me if not past.  I think the guy had an early predisposition, like an X-games mentality and a National Geographic approach to actually doing his list.  He may be about done.

The pyramids in Giza
I went when I was about 11 or 12 and didn't get the fascination at all. Of course five minutes in to it, I fainted due to the heat. But that's beside the point :) Everyone I was with said it was amazing but I spent the day back at the hotel like a pussy. Just because I couldn't take a little heat. Turned out I had low glucose levels. Changed my rigorous 10 year old diet that consisted of hot dogs, Skittles and string cheese, and I haven't had a problem since. I'm pissed about what happened to this day.

should be a staple of everyone's diet. I think they put crack in those damn things.

So any plans to go back? That has to be on my top 5 places to see before I die.

I
get The Show tomorrow and will probably end of with 2K8 as well.  Last year I bought both, but can;t remember which one I liked best.  After a while when I stop playing the ps3 games anymore, I just sell them on ebay, so I do not have either of the 07 versions anymore.

I have MLB '06 the Show...
And I have not needed another baseball game since, thanks to it's "edit player" feature. I can keep everyone's capabilites up-to-date, based on how well they're doing and create new players (e.g., Ryan Braun Jacoby Elsbury) as needed. Plus, I love the graphics, and Matt Vasgerian's commentary might be the best I have ever seen on a videogame.

Have they added any new features to the '08 version that are so cool I have to go buy it? I refuse to buy any other games that do not have the "player editor" feature.

2k8 vs the show
I've never owned a baseball game (at least not in a long time).  Which one of these is the best?

Just got done reading a review for The Show for PS3, and it sounded pretty good.

the flaw in this
i am such a different person than I was at 15 and I the things that I thought were cool then are completely not cool now.

Some people are saying he's very mature and while I admit, those goals are all fairly reasonable to have at later ages.  But, as an example, what if later in your life, you just didn't care about mountain climbing?  Would you still make yourself beholden to your dreams that you had 10 years ago after seeing a movie or reading a book about it?

These lists are I guess a good htingso that you never become complacent in life but I'm not beating myself up over  not following through the dreams I had when I was 15.

I do know people that make lists like these every year to kind of appraise what their dreams are and how they've changed.  certainly, they don't write the goals down in stone.

by ab03 on Mar 3, 2008 6:18 PM CST reply actions

Where's the flaw?
Because he might not accomplish all of them? Because his interests may change, that would make him flawed?

Lastly, why do you care about other people's goal-setting in the first place?

i'm sorry
i thought this was a thread commenting about this guy's goal setting

and i was commenting in general about the flaw in goal setting.  and the flaw is what you pointed out, that interests change.  as i understand it, the point of goal setting is to make a goal and stick to it, no matter what (at least in this guy's case).

i guess i wasn't clear.

by ab03 on Mar 4, 2008 1:49 AM CST up reply actions

Does that diminish anything?
I'm just perplexed at how you can judge whether his goal-setting is worthy or flawed.

As for the "why do you care?" question, I was wondering why the specific details would ever matter to you, and why you feel compelled to assess them.

2/26/08 R.I.P. The BGL ... out.

by inactive lsb user on Mar 4, 2008 2:03 AM CST up reply actions

what are you talking about
1)i'm not the first person in this thread to assess his goals - some people thought the goals were mature, some people thought they were lofty.  And I have a compulsion because I made a 5 line comment on a thread?

2)i'm really not making a commentary on his goals specifically.  i'm talking about goal setting in general.  he's supposed to be a motivational speaker.  I bet he goes around telling people that if you set your mind to do something, you can accomplish it if you stay focused.  i'm critiquing the notion that you should set goals for yourself at 15 and follow through with them, using his goals as an example of how you might not be interested in the same things at 15 as you are at 30, or 45

3)where did I say it diminished anything?  all i'm saying is that people shouldn't beat themselves up over not following through on goals they had when they were 15.

by ab03 on Mar 4, 2008 8:05 AM CST up reply actions

Framing your opinion as fact
is what's throwing me off. But you tend to do that a lot, anyway.

Who cares if you're not interested in the same things later, goal-setting is admirable, regardless of whether you achieve them all or not. It's the principle of striving to do better.

People should beat themselves up over whatever they feel like.

I'm not trying to change anybody's mind.  i'm pretty sure thats what a message board is for - expressing opinions.  what's eating you?

by ab03 on Mar 4, 2008 2:36 PM CST up reply actions

Not at all
Although, I will concede that both of us aren't being very clear here.

My point is essentially that there is no inherent flaw in goal-setting, itself, which ran counter to your initial post.
