Brandon McCarthy to the 60 day d.l.

Evan Grant reports that the final spot on the 40 man roster for the new additions (Dustin Nippert, Adam Melhuse, Jamey Wright, Franklyn German) will be created by putting Brandon McCarthy on the 60 day disabled list.

That means McCarthy cannot be activated until May 29, at the earliest.

Color me disappointed.  I was hopeful that McCarthy would be back by mid-May.

I am shocked!!!

Well, not really.

Better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6.

Put

Dustin Nippert in the rotation, give him a chance.

When

Mendoza or Gabbard fails.

Milton Bradley for MVP

by miles on Mar 30, 2008 3:51 PM CDT up reply actions

How many starts do you give them?

Also, if he starts in the pen and pitched out of the pen all of last year how do you propose that the Rangers get Nippert ready stamina-wise to be a starter?

Better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6.

by LSBUser on Mar 30, 2008 3:54 PM CDT up reply actions

Start him

in the bullpen at the beginning of the season while giving Gabbard and Mendoza a chance for a few starts.

When one of them tanks which Mendoza will(only a matter of time), then give Nippert a chance at the Rotation.

Milton Bradley for MVP

by miles on Mar 30, 2008 3:58 PM CDT up reply actions

You

aren't understanding his question. Nippert hasn't been a starter in two years. If we start him in the pen, we are not going to be able to just plug him into the rotation and have him become a starter. He has to build up your stamina to be a starter, and since he can't get sent down to the minors to do that, it is going to be very hard to do.

I guess we could start him and have him go two or three innings at a time for a month until his stamina is up, but that seems like a great way to ruin your bullpen and lose a bunch of games.

by uthornfan on Mar 30, 2008 4:04 PM CDT up reply actions

You could pu him

in long relief to build up his stamina.

Thanks

But that didn't answer either of my questions.

Better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6.

by LSBUser on Mar 30, 2008 4:05 PM CDT up reply actions

Boomer

answered the question.

Give him long relief and build his innings up more and more. Then his stamina will be there to become a starter again.

by miles on Mar 30, 2008 4:24 PM CDT up reply actions

Really?

How consistent are long relief innings? You never know when he will be needed or for how many innings.

Better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6.

You really have to ask that question

with our rotation?

Sonofa B!

Disheartening...

...it's the weekend, so why the hell not?

by Rodney on Mar 30, 2008 2:53 PM CDT reply actions

so mendoza can bounce back and forth

or is he just going to stay with the rangers till then? I'm not sure what the 5th starter needs are to start the season

by ab03 on Mar 30, 2008 2:55 PM CDT reply actions

Presumably...

...Mendoza is in the rotation until then.

by Adam J. Morris on Mar 30, 2008 3:00 PM CDT up reply actions

and

does this mean that McCarthy can't start rehab until May 29th?

by ab03 on Mar 30, 2008 2:56 PM CDT reply actions

I don't think so

I believe he start rehab at any time.

Better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6.

by LSBUser on Mar 30, 2008 3:00 PM CDT up reply actions

No

He can start a rehab assignment in the minors at any point. He can have up to 30 days, I believe, on rehab assignment (since he's a pitcher).

by Adam J. Morris on Mar 30, 2008 3:00 PM CDT up reply actions

sigh

this is very disappointing.

by DShep on Mar 30, 2008 2:57 PM CDT reply actions

McCarthy is going to need surgery

in the next 12-15 months. He had seemingly unrelated injury problems last year, but whenever you hear that a player has weakness or stiffness in their elbow, they end up getting TJ surgery done sooner or later.

by uthornfan on Mar 30, 2008 2:57 PM CDT reply actions

that would suck hard

I think we can blame Hicks for this one too, lol

But honestly, Hicks believed the Rangers could compete in '07 and thought he needed a pitcher closer to the majors than Danks was.

That jackass should stick to ruining his soccer team

by Baseball North on Mar 30, 2008 3:14 PM CDT up reply actions

Hicks and trades

I am defender of Hicks but I doubt he had any idea who Brandon McCarthy was before JD brought that deal to him. If you want to blame someone then blame the GM.

Better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6.

by LSBUser on Mar 30, 2008 3:16 PM CDT up reply actions

That should read "no defender of Hicks"

Better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6.

by LSBUser on Mar 30, 2008 3:20 PM CDT up reply actions

ya, but

Hicks prolly told JD that he wanted a winner in '07 and JD prolly acted on Hicks' stupidness

by Baseball North on Mar 30, 2008 3:24 PM CDT up reply actions

Well

Daniels has pretty consistently indicated that they believed McCarthy would be better than Danks.

Now, he could just be blowing smoke. But I doubt that Hicks demanding a winner in 2007 had much to do with that trade.

by Adam J. Morris on Mar 30, 2008 4:53 PM CDT up reply actions

Memorial Day roster crunch?

May 29th - BMac will need a spot
June 1st - Mench will need a spot or lose him.
June 15th - Patterson will need a spot or lose him.
Hurley's performance may be demanding a shot around then, too - another spot to clear.
What's Rheino's story?

by shroomer on Mar 30, 2008 3:14 PM CDT reply actions

release the useless guys

hopefully by then Botts will hold a firm grip on 1B/DH, and send Ben Broshiat packing... and find a taker for Byrd... with Greer Jr in left, prolly won't be a need for Mench

by Baseball North on Mar 30, 2008 3:16 PM CDT up reply actions

Crunch?

JD will find a spot for BMac when he is ready.
Mench I think will be cut lose because the kids will be doing ok.
I hope Patterson will force JD to make a move to put him on the roster same for Hurley.
Rheino isn't he out of his element in the city and not in Africa?

at some point...

...you have to cut your losses and move on.

we're counting on this guy to anchor one-fifth of our starting rotation. he didn't do it last year, and he's already out for a quarter of this season.

by oc on Mar 30, 2008 5:41 PM CDT up reply actions

hes had injury trouble for 1 year

hes not exactly mark prior or rich harden yet.

by DShep on Mar 30, 2008 5:49 PM CDT up reply actions

and

what do you mean by throw in the towell? What, you want to DFA the guy or try to trade him while his value is loe? what purpose would that serve at all. If hes on the DL hes not helping us but hes not hurting us.. when hes off the DL he should be one of our better starters. Even with all his problems last year he still had the lowest ERA of anyone on the team to pitch 100 innings.

by DShep on Mar 30, 2008 5:51 PM CDT up reply actions

you didn't answer my question.

at what point do you cut him?

after another injury plagued season, do you seriously bring him back for a third?

by oc on Mar 30, 2008 6:00 PM CDT up reply actions

Yes

I think that's better than releasing him or trading him for next to nothing.

by Adam J. Morris on Mar 30, 2008 6:11 PM CDT up reply actions

When healthy last year he was one of, if not, our best pitcher. These have been the first injuries of his career and now you want to toss him to the curb. Boy i'm glad you aren't apart of our front office.
