Mariners win 6-2
Player of the game: Felix Hernandez and Eddie Guardado eating a chalupa....
Milton Bradley for MVP
Oh and
one other thing.
If we could get this "fanpost" reccomended, that would be fabulous.
Milton Bradley for MVP
Alright, Miles, just for you...
I'll give you a rec as an opening day present.
My prediction: Bedard carries his spring struggles into the season. Josh Hamilton hits a home run in his first official at-bat as a Ranger in the first, to ignite an offense-a-palooza against Bedard, who has to lose to the Rangers sometime. It's 8-0 after 0.2 of an inning, when Bedard is finally lifted. The Rangers cruise to the opening day win, with a final of 10-2.
Oh, wait... that was the game I just played last night on my playstation. Sorry, sorry.
Okay for real:
Bedard isn't completely untouchable this time out, and Millwood turns in a good outing - but it's a tie game after 7, and it turns into a battle of the bullpens. Ben Broussard goes 3-3, and hits a 2-run home run in the top of the 8th inning to give the Rangers a 4-2 win, and to spite his old team. Ron Washington's brain overloads with pleasure and frys itself when Broussard is named player of the game, and Matt Walbeck is forced to take over as manager for the season.
Mine
Millwood goes 6, but a shaky six. Gives up about 9 or 10 hits, gets out of some jams, gives up 5 runs total, striking out 2.
Bedard goes 7, giving up 2 runs, Rangers get about 5 or 6 hits off him.
Hamilton goes 1-4, single.
Bradley 0-4.
Blalock goes deep for the 2 runs off of Bedard (L vs L).
Rangers get a couple extra runs off M's bullpen due to a Gerald Laird double, but it's too little too late.
M's 6-4.
Laird a surprising 2-4 with 2 doubles.
Bonus prediction: Kinsler singles to lead off the game and steals second...however, it's followed by 3 strikeouts.

I think we win 6-4
Milly throws 6 innings and strikes out 4 while walking one. CJ gets his first save of the year.
Hammy is the true beast Miles.
Adam loves him some Lard
websters dictionary says
Lepricon: (noun) a robotic Irish midget who, in folklore, helps mediocre pitchers win home openers for the away team, just to screw with the home fans.
Example: Millwood must have had some help from a lepricon in that 5-2 win over the Mariners today.
webster's spells leprechaun wrong too
seriously miles, look at my spelling. either that or don't ask for any more college advice and be happy you got in to hamburger university.
6-4
Rangers win. Bedard is hittable but still strikes out 10 through 5.1 before leaving due to pitch count. Millwood goes six, surrendering 8 hits, 3 runs, 1 walk, 4 strikeouts. BGL gives up a run in the ninth, but still gets the save.
The Rangers get on the board in the second with a Murphy RBI double and a 2-run Laird HR. They put the game away in the sixth with a MY RBI single and a 2-run double by Hamilton.
Something like that.
Losing
I'm OK with, but if we can't score a single run, it's going to be a colossal knee to the groin.

You want reason for hope?
Last years opening day outfield and dh consisted of:
Sosa- 0 for 3
Wilkerson- 0 for 3
Catalanotto- 0 for 3
Lofton- 1 for 3
Ahhh thank you Josh Hamilton, Milton Bradley, David Murphy, and Marlon Byrd for not being Sosa, Wilkerson, Lofton, and Catalanotto.
wow.
and in another thread, somebody had the audacity to say that they didn't think the OF and DH improved that much over last year's opening day lineup

Which is kind of rediculous since...
LF- Byrd> Wilkerson
CF- Hamilton is massivily > Lofton
RF- Murphy> Sosa
DH- Bradley> Cat
It's just not even a fair comparison.

I'd much rather
have Sosa in there tonight over Murphy, considering Seattle's throwing a lefty at us.

I suppose, if your only concern
were today's game and not a bigger picture.
A working class hero is something to be.
Geez
If you're going to call me out, call me out by name.
I just think that Marlon Byrd is going to regress (his .370 BABIP is in the top 20 for MLB and is unsustainable) and same with David Murphy (.410 BABIP).
I looked at those two guys' projections there is a decrease across the board (Bill James, CHONE, Marcel, MINER, ZiPS). That said, they should still be able to equal Wilk and Sosa. And while Hamilton is a lot better than Lofton, Lofton played pretty damn good for the Rangers. But I suppose once you throw Milt into the mix, the OF/DH improved more than a little.
What happened to my old signature?
I think when you throw defense into the mix
this OF looks much better. Lofton would be the 4th or fifth best OF defensively on this team. Last years OF had limited range and limited arm strength.
"Before I leave, I once again condemn the despicable buffoonery of D.J. Cahill." - Huck
By the same token
How much do you think the Padres are going to miss their OF defense this year? No way that team beats the Dbacks and Dodgers with what they have out their right now.
A working class hero is something to be.
100% agree
In my comment in another post, I probably overlooked not have Sosa and Wilk sucking away ABs. Some addition by subtraction.
I think the improved OF/DH comes close to negating losing Teix. The one thing is Blalock. If he's up to form, the offense is better. If not, it's probably a push. D is better all around.
What happened to my old signature?
yeah
and I didn't mean to call you out personally, which is why I didn't mention your name - it's not my style. I just took a look at his post of last year's opening day outfield and DH and it amazes me...we've really added (if healthy - same thing we'll hear about the whole team all year) a lot of improved pieces, both offensively and defensively, to the team this year

OK
Milly pounds the zone for 6 IP; defense is solid with one great play. As the game goes on, he gets more and more confidence in the folks behind him. 6 hits, three BBs, 2 ERs. Bedard pitches OK (4 runs, 1 unearned) Rangers win 8-4 (M's tag Easy Eddie a bit). Laird goes yard.
What happened to my old signature?
Rangers Win.
period. Don't know how, don't know why...but they pull this one out

I don't even know where to start with a prediction...
All I care is that we don't get blown out. I'll take any kind of win or close loss. That's not too much to ask against the most dominating pitcher in the AL last year is it?
7-4 Rangers Win
Laird 2-3 with a jack
Blalock and Hammy both Double
Kinsler starts the game off with a walk and finishes 1-3
0-4 for Bradley - 2k's
BB goes 0-3 with a sac
Milly goes 5 giving up 4
Bullpen of Kaz, Benny and CJ close it out
Done. and Done.
Ya....That's Real Mature.

Kinsler's out. Uh oh..
Ian Kinsler's got a cold. Will be out for opening day.
http://rangersblog.dallasnews.com/archives/2008/03/kinsler-out.html
What a puss! It's Opening Day!
Knew we shoulda offered him up in the Santana package.....(sarcasm)
Ranger's 6-3 ..... Vasquez leads the Ranger's going 3-4 with a Hr & a double....Hamilton (Steve Nebaraska) is intentionally walked 4 times, twice with the bases juiced!!! Goes 0-0 with 2 RBI.....
Mariners win 4-1
Texas has too many lefties going against Bedard, plus Kinsler is hurt.
Millwood 6 IP 2 ER.

I had an idea on this a few days ago
The "reccomended fanposts" section needs to be made collapsable. That way, you don't have to look at long-dead fansposts that are nearly two weeks old, and you can just check it every day to see if there's anything new.
