Noah Lowry hurt

Noah Lowry has been diagnosed with tendinitis in his hand, and is going back to the Bay Area to see a hand specialist.

That helps explain yesterday's disastrous outing.

For whatever reason, Lowry is one of those pitchers who gets mentioned in connection with the Rangers a lot.  Rangers fans seem to think the Rangers should go after him, and a Jim Callis chat comment this offseason suggesting that a Kinsler for Lowry deal would make sense for both teams got some praise from Rangers fans.

But Noah Lowry isn't that good, folks.  Just because a guy is a lefty groundball pitchers doesn't mean the Rangers should give anything up for him.  Look at his peripherals the last two years, and tell me why the Rangers would want to give up anything of significant value for him...

In the fascination
With trying to get lefty pitchers, I had overlooked that he's a groundball pitcher.  Well, I hope his tendonitis is curable with rest or treatable.  Hand tendonitis could be career ending.

Lowry
Agreed, Adam. The Rangers should have no interest in a guy who walked nearly 90 batters in under 160 innings last year, and whose BB and K totals were identical.

Lowry can get away with that in San Francisco. In Texas, that's an automatic 6.00 ERA.

I don't know
The Rangers gave up a former #9 overall pick for a guy just like that.

Mario Ramos?
He didn't have a 1:1 K:BB ratio...at least, not when the Rangers got him...

I think he is referencing
John Danks as the number 9 pick traded for Brandon McCarthy who had an atrocious k/bb ratio of 1.23 last season.

At least I think that is what he was talking about.

Ummm, no.
Lowry for Kinsler is about as laughable as it gets.  Besides, players don't really come on to Brian Sabean's radar unitl they hit about 35 years old.  Now, a Lowry for Gary Pettis deal, or Lowry for Art Howe swap....now I think that you're talking about something that could happen.

The exchange in question:
"Tyler (denton, texas): Common i gotta know.. Ian Kinsler or Noah Lowry.. good deal for both sides?

SportsNation Jim Callis: (2:11 PM ET ) Texas needs pitching, San Francisco needs hitting, would make sense for both sides."

by jamcadbury on Mar 4, 2008 7:10 PM CST reply actions

Texas needs pitching...
But what Callis forgot to mention was that we need GOOD pitching.

Trading Ian Kinsler for Noah Lowry would be like the Blue Jays trading us Michael Young for Esteban Loazia.

A couple years ago I would have said
trade for lowry.  I mean BB and KOs shouldnt be the only thing to consider.  His era on some bad Giants teams should count for something right.  I wouldnt trade Kins for him but I would trade Duran to get him.  He would be a decent four or five starter here in Arlington due to him being a groundball lefty pitcher. However, Im not saying lets go get him so dont jump down my throat.

But now that I look at some stats I am just fine with seeing what we have in Kason and in a year seeing Harrison in the rotation.

Fun Fact: "Drafted by the Texas Rangers in the 19th round of the 1999 amateur draft, but did not sign."

Didnt know that, did you?

Lowry
Yes, I knew the Rangers drafted him, but only because Jamey's mentioned it in a couple of his newsletters.

I don't think BB & K are the end-all-be-all for a pitcher either, but any pitcher who walks as many as he strikes out generally isn't a very good pitcher.

Lowry also pitches in a very pitcher-friendly park, and in the weaker league- see Chris Young for how moving from Rangers Ballpark to an extreme pitcher's park in the NL will shave a run off one's ERA.

I'd have a hard time seeing Lowry putting up anything under a 5.00 ERA in Texas.

The last thing we need is another 4-5 starter. Just because we could have used him 2 years ago doesn't mean we can use him now.

He had the same walk-K rate once,
last year.  I doubt that happens again.

Actually
Yes I did and was about to make a post about it but checked to see if anyone else mentioned it. I always assumed that was why people were so fascinated with him coming to the Rangers. I don't see any reason to pay a price for this guy, one who clearly doesn't make this team measurably better. The team is better off keeping its resources and developing the pitching they have in the system. Kinsler for Lowry? Stupid.
I just beat the internet. It was hard.

I probably think more...
of Lowry than most here, but Ian for Noah would be ludicrous.

No thanks
Just what we don't need, another wounded.  Last two seasons injury prone and this year another problem.  For an allstar quality player like Ian.  No deal.

Until last year, Noah's BB9 has been only slightly above average.  The big jump in 2007 could have been elbow trouble related.  And despite a WHIP of 1.55 he managed a 3.92 ERA.

question:
hypothetical - would you trade duran for a (healthy) lowry?

for me, no.

i think that duran could be the solution to the util/supersub player for the rangers in a few years.

if duran can be wilson betimit i would be happy.
in other news, betemit is 26 this year. damn. seems like hes been around forever

by knockoutking24 on Mar 5, 2008 12:23 PM CST reply actions

I wouldn't
I just think that Lowry would be a liability rather than an asset. Basically, he sucks.
