Some pitchers agree to take less in order to enjoy perks of Padres, Petco

http://www.signonsandiego.com/sports/padres/20080307-9999-1s7padres.html

Why do Japanese Players want to come to San Diego?  Maybe, cause it's heaven on earth?   Or cause they can get any kind of seafood?  The nice sea breeze vs. the crappy smell of Fort Worth?

Why would any Californian root for a team like the Rangers when you can choose between winning teams like the Padres, Angels and Dodgers within a stones throw of each other?

Your last question...
Simple, when you were a kid your favorite player was traded to the Rangers. :)

You mean...
... Phil Nevin? :-)

The Padres are really boring
I don't know what it is about that club.  But they cannot field an interesting team.  You'd think having a rotation starting with Peavy, Young, and Maddux would be exciting, but the interest dies right there.  Their lineup is just miserable to watch, and it has been for as long as I have lived here (since 2002).  When your best hitters in the decade have been Phil Nevin, Ryan Klesko (the least intimidating slugger of all time), and Andrian Gonzalez, you have problems.

It'd be better if they would just say "We're a pitching club, watch us for our great pitchers and we'll win a lot of 2-1 games"  But their marketing strategy tries to hype up the glory that is Khalil Greene's bat.  Yawn.

The Angels are a disappointment.  Their ballpark is great.  But between Rex Hudler, the Rally Monkey, and their obnoxious fans (think Red Sox fans without the baseball knowledge), their games are unwatchable.

Dodger Stadium isn't worth the hassle of getting to from San Diego.  I'd have to leave work at noon to get to a night game there given its location.

2 things
Go to a Saturday Dodger game. Chavez is worth the trip, and the traffic won't be bad then (still nearly 2 hr drive though).

And what about Edison Field is great? It's as generic as they come for my money. The only cool thing is that you can take the train, but 36 bucks round trip is too much imo, so that's a wash.

Padres are exciting
we should have never got rid of Chris Young :)

I like the Padres.

My favorite NL team.

Go Padres!

Regarding your last question...
California ain't all it's cracked up to be. Smog, traffic, gangs, ext. - California sucks, unless you have boatloads of money and can afford to live at the beach or in Beverly Hills.

And as for the teams around here - I'm not a National League guy, and I hate with a passion the way the Angels are overhyped and overrated. Oh, and the name: LA of A? Yeah, right.

I don't know where you're from, Kev - but take it from a guy who lives out here: this is no paradise like it seems to be on TV.

I'm from Fort Worth
but I just moved to San Diego for good, and I like it just fine!!! I was meant to live in California. Actually, I am from DC and used to root for the early rangers, the Senators...etc, and so forth...

I LOVE San Diego!!

Good for you! San Diego is one of my favorite cities, amazing weather, really nice people and great beaches. I live in West Hollywood and that is also a great place to live. I suppose there are gangs in California, but why on earth would you be in those neighborhoods anyway? They are usually in the bad parts of town. When I go to Dallas I don't hang out in South Dallas and the same principal goes here. West Hollywood/Beverly Hills are very safe and you don't have to be rich to live here.I've lived in L A off and on for over 5 years now and I haven't seen a gang member yet. The traffic can be bad but it's bad in most big cities and the smog is not bad unless you camp out on the 405. But Yeh San Diego rocks!!!

Yes yes
The San Diego/California haters really baffle me. But we've had the discussion before, so no point in rehashing.

Obviously, it is expensive to own a home, but there are alot of 50-60k a yr people I know who have made some really good coin on real estate appreciation.

I was just talking to a co-worker today who bought his house in SD county in 97 for 135. He's out here in VA while his wife is still there. Since the house is worth about 6, even in this down market, he can afford to pay rent here and the mortgage there w/ no worries until they find a home here that they like.

And the point of the article was that MLB players want to come there. I don't think the cost of housing is an issue for them.

I really enjoy
San Diego, the few times I've been there.  But to tell the truth, the coldest I've ever been was on the beach (Coronado) at about eleven at night, and it was around 60 degrees.  Felt like 20 in Texas.

True
But all beaches at night are cold.

I've frozen my ass off at night on the north shore of Oahu a dozen times. Hooded sweatshirts are indispensible.

And are you really sure it was 60 degrees at night? 60 is typically the day time high for Coronado beach (wind chill wise).

Might
Have been colder.  60 when we left the hotel and headed out, right at dark.  About 30 of us stayed out there until past eleven, all were chilly. And we used one of the state firepits, but the wind sort of negated getting warm.

Coronado is a peninsula ..

surrounded by water, so naturally it's going to be colder there as opposed to a regular beach. But yeh it can get a little nippy at night but ohhh soooo beautiful during the day especially Blacks Beach in La Jolla.

You're lucky then
I have been down to SD a couple times, and thought it was OK... but where I live (up in orange county) things ain't near as nice (and that's an understatement).

yeah
I died and went to heaven, just found some luck finally... no gangs in my neighborhood, lots of college students, seems like a college town... Yes, people are very nice!!! I'll take my Fiancee later and visit West Hollywood/Beverly Hills, thanks for the idea! We were in Downtown LA last week cause I was getting training, she was too afraid to go off to Hollywood on her own... yes, I love it!!! PETCO is not that far away either or Jack Murphy Stadium...

you're a lucky guy...

I went to SDSU and lived in Solana Beach and also Hillcrest years ago. You can't beat that weather, always sunny and breezy and hardly ever gets hot.
I go down there quite often it just has that small town feel to it. Blacks Beach is awesome if you don't mind hiking down the canyon. There are some good restaurants to choose and it's always nice to hang out in La Jolla on a beautiful day. It is truly paradise for this country anyway.

Your right, It's all great
I live in Clairmont - Linda Vista and commute to Del Mar, not bad, and they are moving to La Jolla in a few months, I'm about 5 miles from there...I'm going to become spoiled soon!!!
