Rangers Sign Ponson..

Per the DMN Blog:

"The Rangers signed Sidney Ponson to a minor league deal. He will be in major league camp on Monday. GM Jon Daniels said Ponson is in good shape and should be ready to pitch in games fairly soon.
Ponson gives the Rangers some more depth."

I know that this board in general has been against the signing of Ponson in the past, but that was when Hart wanted to pay a lot for him and hand him a spot in the rotation. I see no problem with giving him a minor league deal as insurance for McCarthy, Jennings, and Millwood. Supposedly he has been throwing 93-94 in his workouts and has dropped about 20 lbs. Not a bad insurance policy all things considered, it will keep the team from having to rush Hurley et al in case someone from the rotation misses an extended amount of time.

Good deal
I think this will be a good deal since it is a minor league deal. As long as Ponson doesnt get in the way of Hurley, Mendoza, or Harrison!! But with McCarthy being out at least 4-6 weeks maybe longer we needed the depth.

I'm watching this "rebuilding" program
and shaking my head.

I wonder why Oakland wasn't interested in Ponson for minor league depth?

Hambone, Hambone where you been? I been around these bases, and I'm going again.

Really?
Signing Sidney Ponson to a minor league deal means they aren't rebuilding?

Do you think this is a good move?
I don't see how Sidney Ponson contributes to anything around here, now or in the future.

I don't particularly care one way or the other
If it gives them a body to roll out there for a couple of starts in April if they don't feel the guys in-house are ready, while McCarthy is on the d.l., then I don't have a problem with it.

At this point, in your 5 man rotation, you've got one guy who is out for April, another guy who has been slowed by a hamstring, and then Kason Gabbard, who has never stayed healthy.

Having someone like Ponson around who you can call up and stick out there for a week or three if need be, then cut loose when you are done with him, doesn't seem like a bad thing, to me.

Being a Rangers fan is like having a 36 year old retarded son. They probably won't accomplish much but you still love them at the end of the day.

yup
and, at least ponson has the potential of being flipped.  At this point, with the injuries, if not Ponson, then it would have been Jamey wright.

Let the youngns get some seasoning in AAA.  If they look ready, they'll come up soon enough

i dunno
i just don't see the downside to starting him when everybody is either injured or not experienced above AA

Ponson will be flipped all right
He'll be flipped over drunk behind the mound before the start of his first game.

Ponson - Tejeda
Seems like a rebuilding team would be better served giving those April starts to a younger guy.

you can't just let a young guy
get blasted every fifth day if they aren't ready.  And our bullpen is going to be taxed if you have 3 young guys like that.

Tejeda
is ready as he ever will be. I don't see that Ponson over Tejeda is going to really save the bullpen.

depends i guess
obviously you don't keep sending ponson in if he can't get passed the 4th inning.

on the other hand, if you really project tejeda to be a bullpen guy, might as well start him on that road now.

i feel like kam loe could have turned into a really good setup man at this point but the rangers never let the dream of him starting die (yet somehow they were ok with letting it die for CJ).

but the main thing is that I just don't see it as a big deal one way or the other.

Tejeda...
is not young anymore. He is out of options and will likely be released.

Is it any better to send Ponson out there to get blasted every fifth day? Because that is exactly what will happen. It may also happen with Tejeda, but I would no sooner give Ponson a spot on the 40 than I would smash my balls with a sledge hammer.

Ponson is one of those guys...
like Jason Jennings who has always been destined to be a Ranger at some point. You always hear the Rangers linked with these guys and eventually they come over and play for us. I think this will be like Alan Benes a couple years ago. Ponson has nothing left, not that he ever had much to begin with.

So JD said
Ponson is in good shape and should be ready to pitch in games fairly soon??? I;ll be damn... wheres McCarthy at when you said he was in good shape and ready to pitch in games?

Oh WOW! JD said "Ponson gives the Rangers some more depth." LMAO I seriously have no faith in Jon Danials and his pathetic ideas and trades.
