Thursday morning
As Evan Grant explains, the rain-out last night puts the Rangers rotation in a bit of a rough spot, particularly on Monday. With their luck, it figures that they would have two scheduled off days within five days...and then have their rain-out two days later. Grant also mentions that the plan to hold back Kasey Kiker in High A this spring is a result of shoulder soreness over the winter. I think that we had been led to believe that this was the plan all along, so this is not great news.
T.R. Sullivan tells us that Jason Botts will finally get a start today.
Millwood and Gabbard go today for Texas.

Guillermo de la Cruz
Okay, I had been out of it for awhile, did we actually get a new pitcher or is this an inside joke that I don't get? Help please...

That is awesome
You know at least one player out there will see that "de la Cruz is starting for the Rangers on Saturday" and not realize that it is Padilla. At least not until he gets hit in the ribs
That's awesome!
I still go back to what BGL said, "he's the good kind of crazy." I think this proves at least part of that is true...he's crazy.

from mjh's 4/3 blog entry:
Kiker, according to Rangers' director of minor league operations John Lombardo, is being held back in Surprise to build him up and manage his innings over the long summer. Kiker is "perfectly healthy" according to Lombardo.
Kiker told me the same
a few days ago. Very weird. My guess is that there's some truth to both sides.
I don't see an incentive for the team to withhold info about an injury.

That's my concern
While hightower is right that there really isn't a clear, concrete incentive for MLB clubs to declare someone healthy when he's not, I think that there are three subtle factors that can combine in some formula to cause them to be more likely to underplay pitching injuries:
1. Pitching injuries do reflect badly on them in an indirect way. While no one is completely sure how to keep a young arm healthy, there is almost a voodoo-like superstition about little things that organizations can do to influence this as a pitcher develops. High profile pitching injuries can damage the reputation of everyone from the GM to the roaming instructors and even the scouts.
2. As is mentioned above, various pitchers are a little sore practically all of the time. If the club didn't have hopes and money riding on these guys, no one would hesitate to let them pitch through the level of pain that guys like Kiker might sit out with. And if you reported every bit of soreness as a concern, half of the pitchers (probably more) in the organization would be a concern at any given time.
3. They fear the worst and subconsciously want to declare that nothing is wrong to reassure themselves (and probably the player) that the worse won't happen.

Doubleheader
I was pretty bummed yesterday, because I scheduled my entire night around that game - but I'm pretty excited for this double header today! Back-to-back Ranger games....can't go wrong with that!
Early Game day predictions:
Hamilton (x2) , BB, Kins and Blalock (x2) yard today
Bryd finally shows up in game 2
Botts hits an xtra base hit
Gabby goes 4
Milly goes 6
Rangers sweep the double header
Ya....That's Real Mature.
You'd think
that botts has to get a start today, else Wash needs to go today.

1-5
bloop single
Gerald Laird, the Man, the Father, the Son, the Beast, the One, the Savior, the Immaculate.
I hope he goes 1-4 with a walk
just so I don't have to keep hearing people say that Wash needs to be fired for not playing him. Because if he has an 0fer, we'll hear it was the layoff's fault. And if he tears the cover off the ball, we'll hear that he should be playing everyday.
pitching rotation
Since Rupe is the logical choice to send down once Mendoza comes up couldn't the Rangers move Mendoza back to Monday and let Rupe start on Saturday. Then you could option Rupe on Monday when Mendoza is needed.
this is actually solid reasoning
however, you never know how much rupe will need to be used over the next 2 days with 3 games.
That's a very good idea
But my only question is whether or not Mendoza is considered on the ML club, or in AAA. I know he's on the DL, and he comes off Saturday... I'm just not sure if he's not technically considered on the ML team already or not, meaning we have to option Rupe Saturday. Also, making Mendoza wait an extra two days to make his start may not be the best of ideas, either - you don't want to throw him off-kilter by overresting him.
If Mendoza's not already considered on the club however, we could always call up someone else to make the Monday instead, and send them down for Mendoza later...
In any case, it's an incredibly complex situation - I know my head is spinning over trying to figure this out, at least. There's a ton of possibilities, but I'd bet the Rangers will just start Mendoza on Saturday, as planned, and cross their fingers and try to keep Jamey Wright out of any games over the weekend.
unlucky Rupe
How about this scenario...
Rupe gets sent down to make room for Mendoza. A.J. Murray gets called up to pitch on Monday and Mendoza gets sent down. Monday is Murray's scheduled start in OKC. Murray gets the bus ride back to OKC on Tuesday and someone such as Littleton or Loe get called up to the pen.

No can do
If Mendoza is sent down after his start, he can't be recalled for another 10 days - meaning he'll miss his next two scheduled starts.

Well lets hope
that the starters don't suck it up vs Toronto. Looks like Wright may get the start on Monday if he doesn't pitch too much this weekend.

They can
call up Murray and have him pitch on Mon. against the LAAAAA when he is suppose to pitch in AAA anyways.

Rupe
will have been sent down for Mendoza on Sat, so who do you send down on Mon to make room for Murray?
by Randy Richardson on Apr 10, 2008 7:16 PM CDT up reply actions
The only other guy with options is Kaz Fukumori
And if you call him up again within 20 days, you don't burn an option.
But even so, I don't think the Rangers want to send him down, as they consider him some kind of integral bullpen peice. Other than him though, you'd have to DFA someone like Botts or Nippert to make room for a guy who's only going to make one start, which would be kind of stupid.
Botts
0-4 with 3 Ks...The excuse, too long between ab.

Close enough
0-2, 1K, 1BB.
2 LOB.
Another uninspiring attempt by Botts as he does little to try to win a job as a fulltime hitter.

The one question that I really have
is if Travis Hafner had never even came up with the Rangers and thus never traded away, would we have all of the hand ringing about Botts?
I don't really know the answer to this question.
Why do I follow the Rangers again?
