JD Question

I might be close to making a bet with someone on whether JD will lose his job in a year or not.  The person says he'll lose his job within a year and I said he won't, especially since he signed an extension.  I'm giving him 5 to 1 odds and I'm making the bet $1,000.  So if I lose, i'd have to pay $5,000.  You think it's a good bet?

If we were expected to compete

And we fell flat, I could maybe see him getting fired. But everybody knows this is a developing/rebuilding year and we are not expected to contend for anything,

He is not gonna get fired.

I totally agree with you

The only problem is that I don't know what Nolan Ryan is thinking. Yes, JD got an extension but could Ryan actually think about firing him?

One thing you didn't cover

Is the guy able to pay you the thousand? Sounds like giving odds is a desperate hedge. Either JD will be fired or not, within the time frame. That should always be an even bet, no matter how certain you are he'll stay.

Adam

No as in he won't get fired or No as in I shouldn't make the bet?

by Coolbean04 on Apr 11, 2008 9:16 AM CDT   0 recs

No, I wouldn't make the bet

If it were a straight up bet, I would, but not giving 5-1 odds.

by Adam J. Morris on Apr 11, 2008 9:17 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

+1

5-1 is just too high, especially when we're dealing with the Rangers.

I would take the bet at 2-1, maybe 5-2.

Right around the time all the young talent is ready to contend is when the organization will realize that Ron Washington is the wrong man for the job.

Yeah, I don't like the odds

although I think he is safe in the job.

I tried to change it to 2 to 1.

Don't know if they'd do it for 2 to 1 though. 2 to 1 I can swallow a lot better since now I have some doubts haha. I guess I was too confident before.

Agreed

If I'm not mistaken Showalter was fired before his extension was supposed to hit.

Man, why the hell do you give those odds?

If JD were working for a normal owner, I'd consider it. But there is no telling what Hicks will do. And alot can happen in a year.

And considering the hammering Daniels has gotten from the pseudocognoscenti, I really don't think you should have to give your friend any odds.

If I were a Vegas handicapper, I'd call it a pickem (and everybody knows I love JD).

Your buddy is trying to bend you over.

I disagree

if anything, Hicks has been slow to pull the trigger on guys whose time to leave has come. I can't see Hicks firing JD anytime in the foreseeable future. Everyone will be calling for his head for years before Hicks does anything about it.

That said, 5-1 are big odds for just about anything in sports. I'd actually be worried more about a scenario like the Yankees firing Cashman and Hank Steinbrenner pointing his finger at JD and saying "Here, boy, see what you can do to the Yankees"

Other point, I wish I had enough money lying around to lay $5k on a single bet. Whatever you are doing Coolbean04, you must be doing something right.

Within a year?!

What would he get fired for by this time next year?

Give the odds, take the bet. Go 6-1 if you have to.

the only reason I could think of

is if Volquez wins the NL CY and Danks wins the AL CY. And Hamilton and BMac miss most of the season.

Not saying that he should be fired even under those extremes, but Tommy might cave in to media pressure if 2 of the DVD end up being front rotation types and Rangers have nothing to show for it.

yeah

if the extremes happen, i see hicks going against his whole, jd's my gm and buckling to pressure from the press and fans

Mistaken approach

You are looking at this through the eyes of reasoned, logical, patient person with a keen understanding of baseball.

That, sir, is no way to approach it.

Rick Parry?

Well, Hicks is trying to fire him, but Parry won't leave, and Gillette is in favor of him staying on. Honestly, I think it's one of the few things Hicks has done right since buying the club- Parry is a spineless little ass-kisser who didn't make a peep when ownership tried to undermine Rafa earlier this season.

Parry has screwed up a number of past transfer deals by his indecision (notably Daniel Alves) and from what I hear from our fellow Reds in England, he was at fault for Gerrard nearly leaving for Chelsea a couple years back. That alone should have been a firing offense.
