Running hard to 1st
Just got done reading Jamey's report this morning and he touches something that's always been sort of a pet peeve for me and that's celebrating the fact that someone runs hard to first base.
Everytime it happens, it seems like the announcers or someone will comment about how hard the player ran to first base and how awesome it is to see a player doing whatever it takes to help the team. Hamilton did it in last nights game and so did Byrd.
Am I the only one that just expects a player to run hard to first base? Why is it we praise players for doing this? To me there's nothing easier in the game than running hard to 1st base especially when you're trying to avoid a double play or get an infield hit. Why do people make a big deal about it when it happens?

Am I the only one...
...who expects Josh (and to a lesser degree Tom) to always point out this type of hustle in the neverending sales job that is a Rangers telecast?
Right around the time all the young talent is ready to contend is when the organization will realize that Ron Washington is the wrong man for the job.
Well,
as Jamey points out, it can make a big difference, and not every player does it every time. Since I did not see the play he referenced I appreciated him pointing that out. And I never have the sound on when watching anyway, can't stand Lewin or most other announcers inanity.
A working class hero is something to be.
I think...
more people hustle than not... it's most likely based on the circumstances as to when it gets noticed... i.e. when a player beats out a potential double-play or the announcer is trying to make a positive point about a team getting beat down. "We're losing by 15, but we sure did hustle to first on that ground out."
On the flip-side of that coin - it was as clear as day when MY didn't run out the fly ball that Markakis misplayed in the first the other day and ended up on first instead of second.
A little off topic, but I ordered the MLB audio this season and have been listening at work. Man, if I don't love to listen to Brewers games - I had no idea Bob Uecker was their radio guy. I loved his "Must be in the front-row" beer commercials back in the day and Major League is one of my all-time favorite movies. Juuuuust a bit outside.
Fair criticism.

Hustle
It's easy when you are trying to break up a double play. If you don't hustle in that occasion, then you should lose a lot of respect from your teammates.
I think that hustle is worthy of being called out on sure outs. Like last night when Bradley hit a high pop to left and didn't run it out. Eckstein dropped it and Bradley only got a single. Hard to really blame him, when you see 150 of those in a row get caught, you lose hope that sprinting down the line will get you anywhere. However, a guy like Byrd runs that out every time. Too bad, that's his only chance at getting on base right now.
