That kid whose favorite Ranger is Michael Jordan

Think Jordan could get a glove on a routine play?

Can he play SS?

We might could use one of those.

by Rodney on Apr 12, 2008 9:43 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Why even delete it

It was directly to me and I had obviously already seen it.

In any case, seriously. My response.

1) Its a gameday thread. It is based around people watching a game and giving their spur of the moment reactions. When the rangers set record paces for infield errors the continuance of such play is going to get increasingly negative reactions as it continues. When players are in 1 for 20 streaks its going to snowball as people get more frustrated. Why shouldnt that be responded to? Its not ridiculously negative to be upset about.

2) If you want to make a serious point not to be mocked, is "this thread is a beating" the best way to word it? It didnt exactly have that tone to it, so I didnt treat it as such. Though again I did make a non-joking reply.

Its not at all as negative as you suggested. Again- lots of padilla, millwood optimism. Kinsler/Murphy/Hamilton love. If you are making a serious forum board post to the boards inhabitants, is overstating the issue the best way to illicit a calm and collected reasonable response?

Gerald Laird is my hero.

realized as soon as I posted

you said if a lefty came up there would be a PH. But even with Halliday staying in, I really have to wonder about leaving Cat in there. Did Wash believe that was the best match he could have up at the plate at the last out? I really hope not.

by WhipSmart on Apr 12, 2008 9:56 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

You gotta save...

Bradley to pinch-hit for Laird. If he hits for Cat and homers they are still down 1. If Cat gets on (which I realize right now would be a miracle) then Bradley is the tying run.

by slc ranger on Apr 12, 2008 9:59 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

you need base runners

and Cat, despite his past, just doesn't have it at this point in the season. It's almost as if Wash just thought, "Let's just get home and try again tomorrow" You gotta make some sort of change there.

That's true

But it's 2 outs, and one of your coldest hitters was at the plate. You've got to get that extra guy on before you can hit the tying homer - and he still had Botts on the bench, who might be more of a threat to crush one than Bradley, based on pure strength

by lonestarJon on Apr 12, 2008 10:05 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

On a positive note

Josh seems to come through late in the game a lot. Now if we can just get the rest of the team on board.

Can anyone tell me why cattalanato is even on this team

since we are rebuilding, Was gallaraga on the 40? we should have kept him and DFA cat. He is the only player who I have seen at the plate this year who looks like they are not trying to get a hit, at least Byrd goes up there and puts some wood on the ball, all cat seems to do is ground out to right side of the infield every time we need him to come through

by phina on Apr 12, 2008 9:56 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Because...

...if he's DFA'd, we'd get nothing for him and have to pay him about $10 million. I think the Rangers are hopeful that he'll be productive and they'll be able to move him at the trade deadline.

by Adam J. Morris on Apr 12, 2008 9:58 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I can understand that but he is doing everything he possibly can to diminish his trade value

my problem is the rangers not cutting bait when they had the chance (offseason) to get anything they could for him. Does anybody know what channel the stars game is on for those not in the DFW area??

we'll get nothing from him, and have to pay him about $10 million.

Do you really think

he's not trying to hit? I do agree that there is redundancy on the 25 man roster between Cat, Murphy, Byrd, and Botts. If Cat can increase his value he might be traded later in the year - I think it's too early to start DFA talk about him.

by Randy Richardson on Apr 12, 2008 9:59 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Not trying to hit was an overstatement

I was just mad at seeing him ground out to first to end the game with runners on base in a close game for the second time already this year and i was confused why Wash wouldn't PH for him even though he had bradley on the bench

by phina on Apr 12, 2008 10:07 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Cat historically hits

RHP better than Bradley, so it seems like there would have been limited advantage to be gained. I do think that if Byrd starts to hit, Cat won't automatically be in the lineup against RHP.

by Randy Richardson on Apr 12, 2008 10:18 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Coming into the season I was fine with cat

he was good after a bad start last year.

but when your DH platoon for average hitter starts losing it... theres not a lause of cause for patience. Hes expendable. I still like the guy (and byrdman), but they arnt serving a big purpose right now.

Well, byrdman still contributes defense at least. not sure bradley is ever going to be playing the field six games a week even while healthy.

rebuilding

what makes us a rebuilding team? I don't see the youth typically associated with a rebuilding team.

Teix forced his way out of town, and we traded him for minor leaguers, but other than that I don't see any true signs of a rebuilding team.

I know it's early...

and this may be a knee-jerk reaction, but I think Cat may be done. He's to the point that most hitters reach when their numbers start to decline. If they get any worse than last year that would be very ugly.

Cat should be traded for anything we can get. Anything. A bat boy, a bucket of balls, anything.

by lonestarJon on Apr 12, 2008 9:59 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Cat

He's the kind of player that makes a GM look smart when they sign him at 27 and stupid when they sign him at 33 or whatever he is.

Going into last season, I thought he would suck, and everybody screamed "but he's a 300 hitter!". Guys like him usually hit the wall pretty suddenly and sure looks like he has hit his.

The minor league teams

all tearing up their respective organizations. The lack of long-term contracts? The presence of relatively young players-young players at every position? Just because the team thought Salty needs to catch every day at AAA doesn't automatically equal a lack of direction.

by FirebatM3 on Apr 12, 2008 10:14 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

err

that was meant to your post above.

by FirebatM3 on Apr 12, 2008 10:15 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Boston and NYY

have minor league teams that are doing pretty well also. Does that mean those organizations are rebuilding?

And I think a certain player with a very long-term contract was featured prominently in this game.

Pedro: "I wasn't cockfighting, I just have a wide stance."

by tricer on Apr 12, 2008 10:19 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

They also have

long-term commitments to guys like Beckett, A-Rod, etc. Yeah, we have the MY Contract, but that's about the only long term contract for any player. We're filling out positions of need with cheap, short-term vets while developing our players at the lower minors and getting guys that are ready more experience.

How is that NOT the definition of a rebuild?

by FirebatM3 on Apr 12, 2008 10:22 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

2 points

We don't have long term contracts because the guys we offered them to wouldn't accept them (Zito, Hunter). It's hard for me to see this supposed rebuilding when we throw out these huge offers for declining players and they turn them down.

And having a good farm system is not the same thing as a rebuilding. As I said above the Yankees and Boston have loaded farm systems as well. Rebuilding teams break in young players and give them ML experience. That is the one advantage that rebuilding teams have, they can give their kids ML experience in years that are lost anyway.

Pedro: "I wasn't cockfighting, I just have a wide stance."

by tricer on Apr 12, 2008 10:35 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Other than Salty

which one of our players are ready for the show, exactly?

And I think that's a very narrow definition of a rebuilding team. The Detroit Tigers were certainly rebuilding, but they gave long-term contracts to guys like Pudge Rodriguez, Carlos Guillen, Magglio Ordonez and Kenny Rogers in the midst of their rebuilding efforts. Same thing with a team like the Mets (Pedro, Delgado) and the Blue Jays and currently rebuilding teams like the Royals (Gil Meche, Jose Guillen).

I think your definitions of rebuilding is pretty arbitrary. Rebuilding to me means getting better, and that means you acquire players however possible. The trick is to not latch yourself onto players who might cripple your efforts to be competitive in the future, and I'm not seeing how we don't fit this criteria.

by FirebatM3 on Apr 12, 2008 10:43 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Jason Botts

comes to mind.

Josh Rupe's ceiling is being capped at age 25 if he sticks around in his current role. He's nearing the 50 IP benchmark with a 3.30 career ERA.

Elizardo Ramirez has now thrown 227 IP in AAA, counting this year's outings. (BTW, noticed B-R is slow updating again, huh?) Why not give him a shot soon while the Failedman's of the world are experimenting?

Brandon Boggs with a 3B and a BB tonight is looking to be on track in AAA with a .869 OPS in just 27 AB's. If he continues that, he should replace Marlon Byrd very soon so we can evaluate him in a rebuilding year. He seems like a high beta hit-or-miss prospect that will only get legit 4th OF'er opportunities on a non-contending squad like ours. With his defensive skills, I don't see any reason to hesitate in calling him up.

We can't afford to take on the risk of long-term contracts quite yet, I don't think. Wait-and-see over the next couple of years -- JD is developing a trend of bargain signings as it is.

I just don't see the rush. Extending other younger guys before they become FA's seems like a better priority.

Hmmm...

Well, I certainly agree on Botts. My man-love for that extraordinary human being is legendary.

As for Rupe... I don't see what's wrong with using him as a long man right now. Seems like a good role for him. If he stays healthy and effective he can move into a high-leverage late-inning guy, or be stretched out and start later in the year. He just needs to prove he can stay healthy.

The Lizard and Boggs should hopefully get their shots if they keep producing.

If we're still not giving those guys playing time come June and July, then I'm going to start having a huge problem with our philosophy.

But I think we agree that right now JD's rebuilding philosophy: Young players if they're ready. Short-term risk/reward veterans if they're not, and no long term contracts for anyone who's not a true difference maker.

I still think this team...

is rebuilding. It just happens that most of the kids that are a part of that are still in the minors. You can't deny that this team has shifted their philosophy on how to build a team can you tricer?

ok

does MY suck or what?

All the complaining he does about this team not winning, he should really look himself in the mirror. He cant hit for power, his defense is suspect, and he is not a high on-base guy. Sure he hits for average but thats about it.

But this is the worst I've seen him, I cant defend that part anymore. And its starting to frustrate me greatly. A lot more than the .220 average or whatever, that will come around.

Defense

All I ask is knock the ball down in certain situation like the one ball between him and Blalock.

But overall the infield defense + Cat have been terrible defensively.

Power, defense, OBP...

all true and valid points, but I don't think he sucks.

He has hit a lot of balls well that have gone right to the RFer. He's off to a slow start, no doubt. But I think we are to quick to say a guy with 200 hits every year sucks. He's not great, but he is a good hitter. Just like last year he will start putting some hits together. Hopefully we will at least see his gap power go back up as well.

Actually,

he's hit for some power (2hr, but only 1dbl) and leads the team in BBs - it's hitting for average that he hasn't done yet.

That's actually a good point

I have to admit, MY has rediscovered the power swing this season so far, contrary to what I thought would happen.

Really, it almost seems like he's swinging too hard, with all these fly balls to RF he's been hitting lately.
