The Yankees need a catcher -- why not Laird?

The Yankees desperately need a catcher since Jose Molina went down with a strained left hamstring. That left the Yankees with only sore armed Jorge Posada who was instructed 'not to throw' during the inning he caught. That led to two stolen bases during the inning to total four stolen bases for the Red Sox in the game. The Yankees have to be looking for a catcher, do they have one in the minors that could fill in or should JD be calling the Yanks to gauge their interest.

Laird hasn't set MLB on fire this year but he's got more HRs and RBI's than both NYY catchers combined and has a considerably better OBP, SLG and OPS than Posada. Would they be interested and what could the Rangers expect in return or is it too early to even talk about a trade?

If Molina were out

for the year then maybe the Yankess would be will to give something of value for Laird.

what would the rangers ask for

in general, I'm curious to see what the rangers would identify as needs. I'm guessing htey would just take the best player available.

Seriously, stop

Yankees were reluctant to put a package together involving Hughes for Santana and now you expect them to trade him for Laird?

probably too early

to talk trades, but i enjoy doing it so I'll bite. Laird has been very effective in cutting down base runners and he has been walking, which helps his offensive numbers. I think he will prove to have quite a bit of value this summer. The Rangers either need to acquire an OF who can help now or very soon, young relief help who can help now, or young talent that does not need to be added to the 40 after the season, as there will be a roster crunch, I fear.

If a trade with the Yankees were to go down, I might target Austin Jackson, a talented young OF from Denton who has a lot of tools and who is starting to show better plate discipline, and perhaps Edwar Ramirez, who puts up sick numbers because of a plus-plus change up. He could potentially step into a 7th inning role for us this year and help to solidify out bullpen.

If you could get Austin Jackson for Laird

Well, you should take that and call it an incredible day at the office and forget about trying to get any add in. Laird ain't gonna fetch a prospect the caliber of Jackson.

Chris Stewart...

The Yankees signed Chris Stewart after the Rangers released him recently. He's played in three games for their Triple-A Team (Scranton-Wilkes Barre Yankees) and is hitting .500 (6 for 12) with two doubles.
.......................................................................................................
It doesn't look like Stewart will ever hit well enough to be an everyday catcher, but his defensive game is supposedly very strong. When I asked Jamey Newberg, he said that Stewart could have a multi-year career in the big leagues. I imagine that if they need help behind the plate, Stewart would be high on the Yankees' list of options

by YourNameHere on Apr 14, 2008 9:48 AM CDT reply actions

Stewart

would be an excellent short term option for them. It is good to see him getting a chance.

by clark on Apr 14, 2008 9:51 AM CDT up reply actions

Yeah...

I was hoping that the Rangers would be able to keep Chris Stewart. Before Spring Training, I was thinking that if Jarrod Saltalamacchia was going to start the year in Triple-A that Stewart could be Gerald Laird's backup in the big leagues this year.

I think the Rangers...

why would any1?

he isnt a starting catcher. period. this whole deal where they are trying to get max value for him, i understand that part, but i see them with a pair of 2's and they are trying to make people think their hand is a pair of 10's, and no1 believes they have what they say they do.

.500 or bust!

The Rangers aren't going to get starting catcher value from Laird. Unfortunately, JD (and AJM) seem to be the only ones who can't realize that.

by LSJ on Apr 14, 2008 4:45 PM CDT up reply actions

Yes he is

Trust me there are a couple dozen catchers in the major leagues you would rather have Laird instead of. He may not be Pudge or Sundberg but he is a starting caliber major league catcher. Do we have a potentially better catcher waiting in the minors? Yeah we do. But right now none of them could come in and be distinguishably better than Laird so they get to keep developing in the minors.

by bigsteve on Apr 14, 2008 5:16 PM CDT up reply actions

"starting catcher value"

meaningless phrase.

Joe Mauer is a starting catcher and so is Brad Ausmus. There is no such thing as "starting catcher value", anymore than saying that we want to trade Ben Broussard for "starting first baseman value".

Laird is better than waiver wire fodder like Chris Stewart, but only marginally so and I don't think any team is going to pay a big premium to get Laird instead of taking a slightly lesser catcher for free.

behind Towles now, but valid point taken.

Adam

Don't you think they are locked in with Laird this season until 1) He fails miserably (which he is far from right now) or 2) They fall completely out of it?

Boy oh boy

I hope we get at least one "Hey, maybe we can trade Laird to the Yankees/Red Sox" discussion each week.

Laird is here...

One of the main reasons why Laird is here is to keep from making Salty a “super 2” arbitration guy y bringing him back up so quick. Add that to the fact that he does need some work behind the plate and some personal instruction, and the AAA demotion is a good thing for the ball club.

As far as Laird and value, Dont be suprised to if JD gets more value than you guys expect. To many teams have severe holes at the catcher postion and the crop of minor league catchers that dont reside inthe Texas minors is thin. Laird may bring in 2 mid level guys or a 1 higher end guy. Nothing great, but more than what Lofton brought us.
