4/14 minors - Reed in AA

Don't want to jinx him, but Evan Reed doing well in his start, 5 IP 4 H 0 R 0 BB 3 K. They're touting his FB on the radio.

Davis has one of two Frisco hits, and Andrus has his third walk, which is good to see.

Murray struggled for Oklahoma. Saltalamacchia is hitting .364/.447/.667 after his two hit day.

Cool.

Can't they just put the minor league clubs on TV instead of the Rangers? That would be something to look forward to...

Brandon Boggs!

My man!

He just keeps moving up and putting up better numbers every year. I still think he will be a better major leaguer than David Murphy.

by tricer on Apr 14, 2008 9:45 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

That wouldn't shock me

nor would him being better than Mayberry, which I think you were the first to predict and several people agreed.

Murphy still hasn't moved past 4th OF range, and Boggs only starts to be particularly valuable if he can be more of an every day guy. Hopefully it will happen, sure would be nice.

by zywica on Apr 14, 2008 9:59 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I think a lot of guys

will be better major leaguers than David Murphy.

Davis, MaxRam, Mayberry

all go deep in the second Frisco game. Ramirez also doubled, and his numbers are suddenly very impressive.

Saw Reed in spring training

watched the high A and low A play in peoria against the padres youngsters... He pitched against Chris Young who was making a rehab start or something... remember thinking man who is this guy he has a wicked fastball but since I am no expert just kind of assumed I wasn't seeing anything that special... When he came out though I heard several of the rangers minor leaguers telling coaches on the other field how badass Reed had just looked... Hope this guy turns into a prospect and it looks like hes on his way

Thanks for the anecdote

He's certainly been successful in the pros so far. I like to think that his status as a reliever hurt him in the draft, and he's good value in the 3rd round.

by zywica on Apr 14, 2008 10:02 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Reed

Can you give us some information on his pitching repertoire? I know people have praised his fastball, but could you give mph range with movement sort of explanation?

baseBALLIN!

by kevzta on Apr 14, 2008 10:06 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Here's part of BA's draft profile on him

He has good size and a strong body, delivering fastballs in the 94-96 mph range, though his stuff usually has a bit better life and command when he's in the 92-94 range. Reed throws a slider and changeup but works aggressively off the fastball, keeping the ball down and in the ballpark (no home runs allowed in 40 IP). He has a chance to move through the minors quickly if he can throw more consistent strikes.

As Chase mentions below, I think that the slider is ahead of the change, and improving the slider from okay to good and the change from borderline to usable are his keys.

by zywica on Apr 14, 2008 10:09 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Is he throwing anything in addition

to FB/Slider?

by Chase Irwin on Apr 14, 2008 10:07 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I think I

saw him using a change tonight. his fastball wast 91-92 consistently, and his slider was 84-86.

Madrigal was working at 94-95 w/ a high 80's slider. He walked one but it was in his second inning of work.

The three homeruns in the second game were no-doubters. Mayberry and Ramirez hit theirs into the white patio in left center. Davis deposited his over the patio deck in right.

Ramirez's double was a rocket off the left center field wall. He was swinging the bat well tonight.

Teagarden also hit the ball hard three times, but feel victim to some good defensive plays in the outfield.

by BHill on Apr 14, 2008 10:22 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Last Thursday

was my first opportunity to see Max Ramirez hit. He didn't do much, but it's not too hard to tell that the guy is a hitter. I'll be surprised if he can't be a useful major league hitter if he can find some sort of defensive niche.

by zywica on Apr 14, 2008 10:28 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Silly,

on one of his K’s he froze the guy, and no one got close to making solid contact. His first inning of work was far more dominant than the second, and his second was pretty good.

by BHill on Apr 15, 2008 10:43 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I'm getting pretty excited

about this guy. And it’s even better when I imagine Angels’ fans cringing every time they see his line. He probably won’t keep up this ridiculous pace, but even with some regression you’ve got to be optimistic about his potential. His BABIP is an unreal .182 right now, but if he keeps K’ing 1/3 of the batters he faces it doesn’t matter much.

Whatever gets you through the night, 'salright, 'salright.

Zach Phillips

looks like he's rebounding nicely from his mediocre first start. Good to see.

by zywica on Apr 14, 2008 10:26 PM CDT   0 recs

Actually...

he rebounded from that start last Wednesday. Tonight was a "build on his good rebound start" start.

Ah, I got it

kinda felt like I was being pedantic when I replied to you. And I was right!

It really is just great to hear that so far

guys like Boggs, MaxRam, Reed, and Salts are building momentum and at least trying to capitalize on the oppurtunities that have approached them. I wish Hurley and Murray could take advantage.

Doze anyone know,

if maybe FSN is going to show any Riders or Redhawks Game this year?

by Kinslerhomer on Apr 15, 2008 10:29 AM CDT   0 recs

I'm sure that

you would have said something if you’d seen it yet, but have you heard anything on when any of the Frisco games will be?

by zywica on Apr 15, 2008 4:17 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

No

But for the last week or so I’ve been thinking about e-mailing Scott Garner and asking him. Guess I should get off my can and do it, eh.
