5 Rangers...
I could do without right now. I have tried to stay positive with this team. After all I didn't expect then to finish with more than 75 wins or so. The last 4 games though have left me rather upset. There are many players that are underperforming right now, but here are the 5 guys that I would like to see gone as soon as possible.
1) Ben Broussard - I was not a fan of him coming here to begin with. He has shown some power and that he can hit RHP a little but his defense is pretty bad and I don't think he hits over .240 as a full-time player. I'm one of the few that still thinks Botts has a shot and this year should be that chance. Dump Broussard.
2) Marlon Byrd - Byrd is a great guy. I love his hustle, defense, and attitude. However I don't think he can hit like he did last year and whatever value he had at the beginning of the year is slowly fading away. Deal him to a team that needs a defensive 4th OFer.
3) Frank Catalanotto - The guy has no defensive value and on a team that is already loaded with left-handed hitters his offensive value is almost non-existent as well. I think Cat is on the way down. He has been a good hitter over his career but last year was the beginning of his decline. Hopefully he starts to hit well enough for some team to want to pick up his contract.
4) Jason Jennings - The guy has shown little control and his velocity is at 82-86 mph. That's just not going to work. I think he would lead the league in HR allowed if kept in the rotation all year. It's still early but he has shown me nothing so far and I wouldn't be hurt if he was DFA'd tomorrow.
5) Gerald Laird - I will say this about OMFT. He can bunt and has a very good arm. That's about it though. I'm not a fan of his other defensive abilities including handling the pitching staff, getting in front of balls in the dirt, and framing pitches. He does have some value and the Rangers should take advantage of that ASAP. Salty is tearing up AAA right now and this lineup needs another right-handed bat.
List the 5 Rangers that you would dispose of and why. And yes, you could include a coach, for example. Or perhaps a certain over-paid player who is defensively challenged if you wish. Vote in the Poll for the one that stands out the most to you.

I have a feeling
people will be bashing this thread
but...
1) Laird... to the bench. Hes boring, this is supposed to be a development year, salty is ready and the offense could use the extra (potential) punch.
1a) Melhuse... to retirement. because hes got nothing left offensively or defensively.
2) Jennings... to the DL and then on a tour of the minors in an as long as possible rehab because he clearly doesnt have it right now.
3) Cat... to the bench or if we could find a trade partner. Not good enough to warrant the at bats anymore in this type of season. He can pinch hit and occasionally DH, but much less of him.
4) Broussard... closer to the bench. Let either botts or shelton platoon full time 50/50 with him. They both may suck, in fact probably do, but id rather find out for sure than watch broussard the rest of the season.
5) Mark Connor... because I dont like him.
Byrd needs to stick around because bradley is bradley and we dont have any compelling young guys for the spot. Id like to see more of bradley actually in the field though, which would take byrd at bats. I still like him as a 4th OF, but hes being pushed into more ABs by bradley's injury status.
For MY, its looking like maybe we should have just stayed with the previous contract, but im still not anxious to see him go or anything. Certainly not before andrus is ready, which he isnt close to yet. I think when all is said and done this year his ops is higher than last year at least.
Gerald Laird is my hero.

Ill add that..
as much as i want to see less of some of these guys.. its really only salty i want to see a lot of right now.
SP/OF/DH.... id rather see younger guys but Im not actually excited to see most of the guys who would take their spots.
so i really dont care that much about most of them going anywhere. except for the obvious one.
Gerald Laird is my hero.

+1 on the MY contract
That will someday soon be looked upon by educated Ranger fans as a serious mistake.
Right around the time all the young talent is ready to contend is when the organization will realize that Ron Washington is the wrong man for the job.

Well I already think it was a mistake obviously...

Educated Ranger Fans
knew it was a serious mistake the second it was signed.
We will end up paying a higher percentage of our payroll for MY than the Yanks do for ARod.

I bet you all thought I'd vote for Laird on this poll
But I went with Cat (or as I call him, Crapalanotto)
SLC’s summariztion of him was dead on: he’s worthless, and taking up a precious roster spot. Getting rid of him would be addition by subtraction.
by lonestarJon on Apr 15, 2008 4:15 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
SLC, I think you got it right,
I voted Jennings. He obviously isnt 100 percent, at least he isnt pitching like it. Cat, Byrd, and B.B. would make a lame bench but at least a semi reliable one(at one point in time). The only beef I got is with the Lardster. Granted, everyone wants to rush the Saltster up to the biggies but com’on, lets take advantage of Lard as best we can, get Salts a couple more months in AAA, then call him up to play everyday. Trade Laird, DF’A him for all I care. Keep him as a backup if you want. But Salty is part of the future, imo, or else we wouldn’t have made the trade to acquire him.
At this point Id rather see Lard instead of Salty making stupid rookie mistakes like he was bound to make this year. I want to see a better transtion for him so that his stay here is permanent and long.
Adam loves him some Lard

Alright
Everyone take a inhale deeply. Let it out. We knew this thing was going to be awful last July. It is only going to get worse. It is going to be an ugly summer.
1)BB – They thought that he was the best available short-term option at 1B. It doesn’t look like he is. However, as soon as Wash quits giving him AB’s against LHP, he’ll look a lot better. (Wash is going to quit giving him AB’s against LHP, right?) There are at least 4 guys in the organization that I would rather see getting at bats than him, but that time will come.
2) Byrd can be a very valuable member of this team going forward. Just not as an everyday player and not hitting in the middle of the lineup.
3)Cat. TODAY, I’m going to say be a little patient. He is swinging a little better and you have to think over the course of the season he will be a productive player. He is a guy that could be moved at the deadline if he is swinging the bat well, so he should be given every opportunity to do so.
4) Without having many other options at this point (Feldman really needs more time, Hurley’s not ready, Murray is a non-factor), you keep running Jennings out there if he’s not hurt. Especially since you are getting such good starting pitching around him right now. Remember, starts like his are all we got from everyone for about a month last year. He may right the ship and be valuable trade bait or warrant an extension. Or you release him in June if he’s still giving you what he is giving you now.
5) This has to be bitterness talking. Laird has been fine offensively and has been thrown very well. Salty is building confidence in AAA and hopefully getting better behind the plate. This is working fine right now.

laird
it says who you would like to be gone, not necessarily the 5 people who have performed the worst… obviously some people like myself care more about seeing salty then if laird is doing alright for 2 weeks.
although lairds literally had one good day offensively. hes batting .125 with zero rbis outside of april 6th. everyones stats are effected by one day right now, but not like that.
Gerald Laird is my hero.

Laird
I’m not a Laird fan by any means. However, I am fine with him starting right now. He is an adequate ML catcher that can control the running game. I’m glad that Salty at age 22 is getting to take the time to dominate AAA pitching. I think that he needs that. He also needs to get some confidence behind the plate. He was awful back there during ST. Of course I want to see Salty, but I’m glad he’s not a part of this awful team right now. Hell, I wish they could send down Hamilton and Kinsler right now to spare them, move Andrus and Davis up and let them all play together and dominate (Not happening, but it would be fun to see them all on the same field) I guess I just expected this to be an awful season and don’t want to see young guys rushed up just because they are a little better.

Wow - this is a tough one...
Although Byrd probably deserves the axe the most in my opinion – I voted Broussard simply because I had much higher expectations of him. I know we’ve been spoiled by having Teixeira around, but I didn’t think Benny-Boy would be such a step down defensively as he is. Cat gets an honorable mention – what happened to that guy the last 2 years?

Then
You have more focus than I do. I need some kind of sound or else my mind wanders off to whatever else it is that I’m putting off to watch the game. Similarly, if an announcer does nothing but call balls and strikes, I slip into a catatonic state.

Brett, I take this oppotunity to agree wholeheartedly
We’ve got some great broadcasters compared to the average. Eric and Victor are great, and Lewin and TAG aren’t bad either.
Compared to most teams, we’re sitting pretty in the broadcasting dept.

Cat
A singles hitting 4th outfielder with absolutely no defensive value. I’d rather have Boggs as the fourth outfielder. If Cat plays as anything but a DH it’s a travesty.

How long does Salty need to toil in AAA
Jarrod Saltalamachia AAA
AVG OBP SLG OPS R HR RBI
.364 .447 .667 1.114 7 2 9
zero errors
Let’s get part of our future in the bigs. it sure will make me want to watch this pathetic team a little more. It is painful this year, but we knew that – much like every year.
Wait 'til the year after next

Catman of the Americas
The guys a no defense playing stiff. He’s 34 and it doesn’t seem like we have the ability to contend this year so why are we running out a guy that hit .260/.337/.444 last year who won’t be around when we are ready to contend. We are really never going to know what Jason Botts can do as a full time player if all we do is pinch hit him. He should replace Crappalanato as the DH as soon as possible.
Not to mention I’m still bitter about giving up the 16th pick for him.

Am I the only one who seesa team.....
with no FOCUS or fire…..I was there opening day and they were just walking around…..hell, it was OPENING DAY! I watched every game since and have seen the same thing….no focus!
They missplay balls, throw to the wrong base (or not at all), stumble around, don’t move runners, don’t hustle after missed balls, bobble potential DP balls, etc., etc.,....
Blame the players or Wash and the staff, but something needs to change in a hurry!
BTW, sending Salty to the minors was a fuck-up from the beginning….we lost Stewart (no biggie, probably) but just lost him because of an overflow of catchers since Laird wasn’t moved….he can not ‘recieve’ the ball worth a shit, he jabs at it and costs our pitcher’s strike calls constantly, how many balls in the dirt has he missed?....take away that one game and what’s he hitting?
