How Big are the Rangers in Oklahoma?

Hello Rangers fans. Over at Royals Review, I've posted on Enid Oklahoma, one of the four cities in the Sooner State to have the Royals on the radio.

I've always thought that the Rangers were the most popular team in Oklahoma, followed by the Cardinals and then pure randomness (bandwagon fans of the Yankees, Cubs, etc.). Some of my readers think that there is a significant Royals presence in the northern part of the state, but I don't know...

Weirdly, from what I saw online, the Rangers no longer have an affiliate in Oklahoma, which may or may not be a new development. I can remember the glory days of the Rangers on WBAP, which you can basically pick up anywhere in the lower 48 at nighttime. KRLD is nowhere near as strong, but maybe its solid enough to reach southern oklahoma with ease.

I'd love to hear from you guys about how Oklahoma breaks down, and especially anyone from Enid. The Royals Radio Network is pretty spread out, but in many areas they are clearly not the top team in the area, or so one would expect, and I've become pretty nerdily obsessed with this stuff over the years.

Hi royalsreview. I’m actually an Indians fan. Loved your Raffy Betancourt stuff last postseason.

I also happen to be from Oklahoma City. Texas still does have an affiliate here, the Redhawks, although the Tulsa Drillers affiliation with Texas ended a few years back (it’s Colorado now).

I’m not sure who the most popular team is, but it’s close between the Rangers and the Cardinals. The Rangers are gaining/separating themselves, though, as the Cards fans tend to be older fans who became baseball fans before the Rangers were in existence. My grandfather, for instance, was a Cardinal fan that listened to their games on the radio every night.

I would agree with your readers who say there is a nice Royal following in the state, but they are definitely #3. Part of the problem is that, at least in the OKC market, we don’t get nearly as many televised Royals games as we do Rangers, Cardinals and Astros (who strangely don’t have much of a presence here, which is odd because we get quite a few ‘Stros games on FSW).

Also, I am an idiot and just now realized that when you said the Rangers don’t have an affiliate in Oklahoma you were speaking of radio affiliates and not minor league teams. Apologies.

I'm a Rangers fan from OKC

There are quite a few Rangers fans in my opinion running around the great state of Oklahoma. I’d echo TonyH in that it’s Rangers, Cardinals and Royals.

I want to say the Rangers use to be on 640 which later became the Sports Animal. They switched to something like 1620 AM or 1820 AM and you could barely pick it up after that. Now of course you can get almost every game on TV if you have Dish network.

I was actually at a RedHawks game the other night and the announcer asked how many Rangers fans were a the stadium that night. Though there weren’t too many people in attendence – I was pleasantly surprised to hear quite a few cheers.

I live in OKC

I think there are a lot of Rangers fans in Oklahoma. I don’t know that they are the most popular team here though. I know more Yankees and Cardinals fans. I wish there were a station that would pick up Rangers games. I can sometimes pick up KRLD but its usually too weak to get it clearly.

Mostly

Rangers fans by a good margin, followed by the Cardinals, and then the Royals. Although I would agree that the Cardinals following are more of the older crowd. The Royals and the Cards are pretty close. I did enjoy your article on Enid. I do a lot of business in Enid. The high school ball park is one of the best you will ever find. I’m usually in KC once or twice a year, and try to catch the Royals when I am there. Most people who live in central and southern Oklahoma head to Dallas for games and entertainment. It’s a three hour drive from OKC, where KC is five or so hours.

Quiet Fans

I live in OKC and I have found that there are a lot of Ranger fans that don’t show it. It’s almost like they are afraid to hear all the Rangers jokes. And I agree with the posters above that talk about the Cardinals crowd being an older crowd. I do think that if the Rangers got good there would be a ton of support from Oklahoma.

Tulsan Reporting

The Rangers used to be the it team here up until the Rangers moved the AA over to Frisco. That put a bad taste in some fans mouths. But they sill dominate the television as almost every game can be seen as cox shows the kdfi games on their channel when foxsports doesn’t have a game. The Cardinals run into the playoffs a few years back also spiked interest over there and you had a lot of bandwagon fans visible during the world series. But you know its still a Rangers town when Frisco come to town to play the Drillers (now a Rockies franchise in case you forgot, which by the way is funny cause no one i know follows them, even when after last years run) draws a good crowd, i know im looking forward to seeing them next month. I make a pilgrimage each year to Arlington, in fact i just got back from watching the Toronto series…woo hoo :(

Down in Texas for the Toronto series...

I went down there for the Friday and Saturday games. Probably the worst 2 back-to-back games to see all year…

nice...

1) It is odd that the Astros don’t have much of a presence. Then again, for some reason it seems like the Rangers have been more successful in spreading their brand. The Rangers seem to have fans in NM and OK (Ark? I don’t knw) but the Stros just seem to be east texas. Maybe I’m wrong.

2) Tulsa could be a battle ground if the Royals ever got good. But it may also be closer to Cards territory. They seem to be big in southern MO.

Astros

Houston is a completely different media market than DFW. Most of Oklahoma is commercially tied in with the Dallas and Fort Worth merchandising area, and is much closer for broadcast rights, retail franchising, even transportation (drive time under 3 hours for many). Granted there is an oilpatch financing connection between OKC, Tulsa, and Houston, but it’s about the only connect.

I’ve no clue how an Astros franchise would fare in OK. Probably OK after about four years of steady support, since fans in OK tend to stick to their loyalties pretty much.

WBAP

I think the Rangers made a huge mistake by switching to KRLD. I’ve even picked up 820 out here in California late, late at night with some extra-clear skies. Keeping Eric Nadel’s voice on WBAP when the Rangers started getting fun to watch in the late ‘90s would have done wonders for the Rangers everywhere west of Kansas City and east of Phoenix

Growing up I’d have trouble with 1080 going underneath bridges in west Fort Worth.

WBAP

I remember being at Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, New Mexico one summer (just outside of Taos) and being able to pick up the Rangers game at night. Good times.

OKC here...

I’m a huge Ranger fan, but I’m a recent transplant from Dallas. I can get KRLD on my work car after about 7:30 pm, but not if it’s not pretty clear weather. And even then, if I get to close to something electronic (drive-thru speaker, etc), it totally screws the whole thing up. Oddly enough, if I’m in my personal vehicle (or my wife’s), I’ve got no shot at all of picking up KRLD.

Since I’ve only lived here about 3 years, I don’t really have a good pulse on the sports-heartbeat of Oklahoma (except that everyone here seems to love o.u.)...it would be nice if there were a Ranger radio affiliate here, if for nothing else than for fans of the Redhawks to keep tabs on the big club and hear updates on guys that they used to watch play in OKC.
