Roster Issues

Ok, so apparantly if Hank's back doesn't feel better tomorrow, the Rangers will be forced to put him on the DL

That would force the club to call up someone to either take Hank's spot at third or Vasquez's spot as a utility infielder.

First choice is obviously Metcalf, but he's injured.

Arias is on the 40-man roster but unable to take the field. Salty's on the 40 but limited to first base or catcher.

German Duran would seem the liely choice but he's not on the 40.

This could be a good thing.

I say DFA one of the following. Jennings, Broussard or Cat.

I guess another option would be to cut ties with Mench (is he on the 40??) or DFA Cruz (assume he's on the 40).

They could try to avoid the situation if Hank doesn't feel like it's too bad and possibly play Vasquez at 3rd and use Cat or Melhuse as emergency infielders (ugh x 10)

It'll be really interesting to see how this plays out.

Ummmm, you would DFA one of those guys who all have decent salary obligations just to bring up Duran for two weeks before sending him back down? No thanks.

They'll probably play Ramon Vazquez at third full-time

And call up German Duran or Ryan Roberts to take over as UT INF.

What they should do, IMO, is call up Duran, play him there, and DFA Melhuse and call up Salty.

Because not only do you have to replace Hank at third, but you also gotta replace his bat – and there’s nobody except Salty who can come even close to providing the sock Hank does. You think we suck offensively now, wait until Vazquez or Duran is playing 3rd every day – if you lose Hank’s bat, I think you gotta call up Salty to replace at least some of that sock.

Disclaimer: yes, I like Salty. But that has nothing to do with the fact that I’m scared of how bad-off our offense would be if we don’t replace Hank.

Duran just jammed his finger...

He can probably play, but he won’t be at 100% right now… not an ideal situation for a guy to make his major league debut. I say stick with Vasquez and call up Roberts.

Do we still have...

Edgardo Alfonzo on the farm? If so, he’d be a good callup as we could just DFA him back off the roster when Blalock was back.

Drew Meyer

Get something out of that wasted pick. Don’t disrupt that chemistry in Oklahoma or taint anyone meaningful with the disease that the Rangers have right now.

That was my thought

Assuming Meyer is still on the 40 which I don’t think he is. You know Wash would hate to play an injured rookie at 3rd for two weeks and much rather have Vazquez there. Don’t waste all the extra headache just to have Duran come up here and go cold on the end of the bench.

Arias

He can play the field. Probably not 3rd base but he can play 2nd and possibly short if needed. But really the move should be about ease. To get Duran or Roberts up here would take making a roster move. A move that is unnecessary given it will only be a 15 day stint. With Duran you would be burning up an entire option just for two weeks. If he had started off hot in AAA I could see the argument but he hasn’t and is coming off an injury himself so I don’t think that is ideal. Reality is whoever comes up may play in 2 games during the time so we don’t exactly need a world beater out there. Arias’ status on the 40 man makes him the easiest choice IMO

might be a good time

to see what Atlanta would give up for a reliever right now. Despite Benoit’s showing last night, I still like our bullpen for the year, and the Braves are all about winning this year and have gotten off to a solid start. I wonder if they would send over someone like Gorkys Hernandez (who they acquired from Detroit this offseason) for one of our extra bullpen arms (maybe Frankie?). That clears a spot on the 40 and gives us a very toolsy outfielder to send to Bakersfield to play along side Borbon.

+1

I’ve always wondered why we haven’t moved any bullpen pieces. It seems like all you hear about is teams looking for bullpen help and it seems like we have a plethora of arms. Are teams just not willing to give enough in return for these arms?

Because

the bullpen pieces they kept on the ML roster will need to be replaced with the depth they have at OKC.

Woops hit enter to soon

I don’t understand what question you’re answering there but what exactly is the point of building all this depth if we aren’t ever going to do anything with it?
