Just thinking
Broussard ......... gone
Melhuse ............. gone
Salty ..................... brought up
Duran .................. brought up
Would not this be a better team with more flexibility?
Botts, Salty, catching
Botts, Salty, Cat, !st base
Duran, much needed extra bench guy
Botts, Cat , left field in a pinch
Opinions?

botts
he’d be the largest catcher in the league!

He probably meant Laird
Everyone just has Botts on the brain after yesterday.

Hmmm...
When did Botts become an option at catcher? Did they try him out there in the spring?
I don’t really like Duran as a bench/utility guy. He may become that in the future, but right now I want to see him play everyday.
Also, I hate to say this, but I think Broussard is a better lefty v. right hitter than Cat.

Duran
I like the player.
He would be better off proving himself in AAA.
He’s gotten off to a slow start, it’d be tough playing him sparingly with the ML club now.
I do hope they groom him to play a few more positions, if only so he’s ready to step into a range of starting roles or, OK, the utility role even.

This is stupid
every guy here knows he meant Laird as catcher but they are so caught up in making every1 know how smart they are that they rip the guy for his misstatement as opposed to analyzing his argument.
what are you 12?
to answer your question ringo, yeah i think we saw how a lack of flexibility can hurt a team when it comes to extended innings, and thats not even discussing the long wear and tear of game in game out flexibility needed to survive in this league.
the thoughts crossed my mind that this teams flexibility when it comes to defense and bench help is gonna be tough to overcome without some adjustment.

No,
I wasn’t 100% sure he meant Laird, I don’t know this guy. Reading and quick posting at work doesn’t make for careful thoughts anyway, we’re not all trying to be snarky all the time. Some of the time, maybe, but not all of the time.
Anyway diaries like this are kind of annoying because NONE of these things are going to happen soon. They are not just going to dump Broussard, and both Laird and Salty are more likely to go than Melhuse. Duran needs to be playing every day in OKC for at least a couple more months. So, no, these aren’t realistic ideas until after Memorial Day probably. Everyone seems to think you can run a franchise like your fantasy or computer game team.
If you replace Botts above with Melhuse and trade Laird, then I like all of those ideas above. But none of them are going to happen before summer with the possible exception of Duran for an injury replacement.

What?
How could you not be 100% sure that i meant Laird and not Botts. Botts is not a catcher and I made a mistake.
Although you may find this post annoying, how could it have been presented that would hove been less annoying? It was just an observation, after all.

Jesus, people
I was NOT trying to be an asshole, relax. I am so sorry that I phrased it that way and caused several folks to experience chest pains. Perhaps what I should have typed is “did you mean Laird?”.
If it will make you feel better, substitute frustrating for annoying. I’m as frustrated as you are about the roster, but I think it’s a bit useless to pose these options now, and that is partly why I am frustrated.

FWIW
tball knows his baseball, which is why i wanted to get his opinion on the topic rather than the snide remark.
the undertone that u dont know jack and im a baseball guru is what made me stop posting on NMLR so long ago, and i only recently rejoined that groups conversations, i still think their petty bickering gets in the way of any meaningful baseball discussion they have over there

Or is there no space after the t???
All you had to do was comment on the subject matter of the post as you did above instead of leading off the comments with a “Botts is a catcher?” smart ass remark.

Mistakes
I agree 100% with you jayslick. For whatever reason on this board a person is not allowed to make a mistake when it is so obvious what that person actually meant. It is very tiresome. I just wonder if that is how some people go through life (correcting people non-stop for little stupid things). I know when I’m in conversation, if a person says something mistakenly I do not interrupt them to point it out, I let the conversation continue to flow so that business can be taken care of. When the mistake is obvious of course.

Lack of flexibility?
We pulled our utility IF in the 6th inning and then lost our starting 3B in the 9th, pulled our 1B not once but twice and were able to still field a decent team. How is that unflexible?
The only way I want Salty up here is if he is playing everyday. Not 1B but behind home plate. Melhuise is the perfect backup catcher. His versatility to be able to play 3B in a pinch only adds to his value. Sure you don’t want him up in clutch situations like last night but on a normal night you would be able to pinch hit Laird for him. Last night hopefully is a once a year type scenario. I don’t ever want to use our backup catcher in the field unless absolutely necessary.
Until Botts proves himself in the field I want the ability to put Broussard in there. Say what you want about last night but his career high of 7 errors in a season says he is above average. Maybe not gold glove material but last night aside I would rather have Broussard in there than Botts in a close game.
Duran looks like a nice utility guy in the future but his present should be spent in OKC. He isn’t on the 40 man roster so to burn an option for a quick 2 week stint up here would be senseless. With Kinsler and Young/Andrus entrenched at his positions for the next several years having as many options on Duran is the best scenario.

both Laird and Salty are more likely to go than Melhuse.
explain?
melhuse is fodder, both laird and salty help you win, why would meluse of all people be the guy most likely to stay out of those 3?

It’s Melhuse! ;)

You probably
should have used a comma after capitalized.

Because
Both have much more value in trade. I just think they’re likely to trade one of them for something useful or even valuable and hang onto Melhuse as a backup.

Agreed
I don’t see them keeping both Laird and Salty. They’re just simply not going to put Laird as a backup to him and when they bring Salty up it will be to play every day I would think.
by Chris Hanes on Apr 17, 2008 2:49 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
yeah i see that
i just dont think we will ever be able to sell laird as a starter, and if laird is considered a backup for now, id rather just keep him in a backup as a ranger and wait for TT to push him out.
maybe thats just me, but i havent seen evidence that Laird is a starter, and if i dont see that i doubt cashman or some other team like the reds will either.
